So, there's this crowdfunded, super high-tech juicer called the juicero.. and it's looking likes its a big old boondoggle.

Juicero can only juice supplied 'juice packs' containing cut-up fruit, not any fruit you may wish to have squeezed...

and these juice packs can just as easily be squeezed by hand, producing as much juice as the juicer, and in the same timeframe.

After the url, before the end bracket, put start=(number in seconds, so if you want it to start at 1:23, put 83) end=(number in seconds again)

For the curious, here's what's inside one of the packages.
It's just a mash which gets pressed to extract the juice and leave the pulp behind. As people have shown, it can be done with bare hands, but it suggests that at best the moving parts inside the machine are equivalent to a rolling pin.

If they did that then they couldn't use the wifi connection to ensure that you are only drinking official Jucicero brand juice available from Jucicero itself. And that you are following the strict expiration schedule of the juice packets to the letter, since the machine will simply not juice an expired bag. And you also wouldn't feel obligated to continue only drinking Jucicero brand juice because you've already blown $400 on a useless machine that does nothing but squeeze juice from bags.

Can't you see all the benefits to doing things this way?

You could probably achieve similar results on actual fruit using a food processor, a potato masher, and a sieve. Unless you're juicing citrus fruits, in which case you can use a manual citrus squeezer.

I too have a novel idea: maybe they could press out the juice in the factory and deliver it to the consumer in some sort of container made out of cardboard, plastic or glass! Patent application already on the way.

Funny thing that got pointed out in one of the articles about this piece of shit: it's actually a great device for people working in hospitality, like bartenders.

Basically, the packets are easier and faster to handle than raw fruit and vegetables would be, it's less messy (throw away the packet afterwards and you're done) and the time cost of cutting up your own fruits and vegetables to juice is much more significant when you're cutting up an entire day's worth at the start of every shift. I mean, when I worked as a bartender at Crown I used to spend a solid two hours of the graveyard shift just cutting up fruit so that there was enough stock for the rest of the day. A shift to juice packets like this would actually be much more efficient.

If Juicero rebranded as a professional juicer for high-end restaurants and hotels instead of a kitchen appliance, they could actually make a lot of money just from supplying the juice packets. But as a device for personal use? It's completely retarded.
