When are people going to let stuff go?

http://bipolarblast.wordpress.com/2009/10/12/reconsider-columbus-day/

Just watch the video, and post how you feel. I'm speechless.

The link is safe, but I don't know the rest of the site, just googled it because I watched it elsewhere.

I didn't see one white person in that video. The old hag with possibly blond hair doesn't count.

And i don't get school off on Columbus Day, so what the hell was the point of that video again?

Well yeah we should TOTALLY celebrate Cortez instead... way more badass. (just watch El Dorado)
I also like the whole "started slavery", sure Columbus (FUN FACT: who was under the impression the world was about to end) was a dick but he didn't invent slavery.

I can understand the point they're making, but I gotta say, it's a really slippery slope. If you're going to follow that logic, why not reconsider Valentine's Day because the priest Valentine was actually a war criminal? Why not reconsider Independence Day because many of the founding fathers owned slaves?

That said, I do think a nationally recognized holiday for the indigenous people of our nation is warranted. Our country was founded in the bloodshed of these people, and that's something we can't change. I don't think it's unreasonable to, at the very least, show them the respect in modern times that we didn't show them in the past.

Honestly, I think they're right in the video. There is nothing we really should celebrate about Columbus, he was an awful human being. It's been stuck in my craw since my junior year of high school when they decided to give us Columbus Day off instead of Veterans Day.

Seriously, he did some messed up things.

Most public holidays are flawed like this in one way or another, though in my opinion this one is pointless enough for the flaws to tip the balance. Yes, he moved his group of Europeans to the Americas, but we don't have a public holiday in Australia to commemorate the first boatload of prisoners to be dropped off on the shore, do we?

Does Thanksgiving count?

If not I think we should call it "Sorry I Killed And Raped Your People for Land Day" Or SIKRYPFLday for short.

lol, he didn't even, "discover" America is the funniest part.

My girlfriend and I were discussing this today. It's true, we're celebrating this man for absolutely no reason.

...But its a day off from school so whatever.

Fair enough. If they want to petition for a change go ahead. A day for the indigenous people would be good. I don't know much about Columbus but I'm not American.

Yeah but they're trying to make a point out of the weak fact that without him arriving in the Americas, The colonies probably wouldn't have been founded and slave labor would not have been required.

I know I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think there are many people that celebrate the holiday as a way of respecting the Native Americans. It's more like "eat until you can't breathe and be thankful for what you've got day."

I was thinking something that celebrates Native American culture instead of our own.

I actually feel kind of sorry for Columbus. He is a victim of revisionist history: he was not nearly the douchebag most people think him to be nowdays. Read his diary: it's slightly more accurate than the crap modern history books say about him.
