I can understand the point they're making, but I gotta say, it's a really slippery slope. If you're going to follow that logic, why not reconsider Valentine's Day because the priest Valentine was actually a war criminal? Why not reconsider Independence Day because many of the founding fathers owned slaves?

That said, I do think a nationally recognized holiday for the indigenous people of our nation is warranted. Our country was founded in the bloodshed of these people, and that's something we can't change. I don't think it's unreasonable to, at the very least, show them the respect in modern times that we didn't show them in the past.
Does Thanksgiving count?

If not I think we should call it "Sorry I Killed And Raped Your People for Land Day" Or SIKRYPFLday for short.
I know I can't speak for everyone, but I don't think there are many people that celebrate the holiday as a way of respecting the Native Americans. It's more like "eat until you can't breathe and be thankful for what you've got day."

I was thinking something that celebrates Native American culture instead of our own.
So that means we can finally stop humiliating our children by making thm dress up in pilgrims and NATIVE-AMERICAN costumes for our thanksgiving pageants? Or do we need to keep those for SIKRYPFLday?

Should we just forget about history because everybody was so mean to everyone else? People have always been jerks. There are plenty of dark sides to every history.

Easter? Originally not Christian, yet turned into one of the most Christian holidays out there...let's just forget it, okay?

Oh, Jesus set the stage for a whole bunch of religious crap...why do we celebrate his birthday? That's just insane!

I don't really celebrate Columbus day, but this is just ridiculous.

Ideally, yeah. Lowering the plight of the Native Americans to the level of a happy-go-lucky children's play seems a bit insulting, don't you think?

Imagine if a school tried to put on a sterilized, idealized and totally stereotyped version of the Rosa Parks story for Black History Month.

He said right in his journal: "They are extremely friendly, and happy to trade, overly welcoming, very strong and hard workers. They would make good slaves"

Though if it wasn't him, it woulda been somebody else.

While I may agree with them just a bit, it's a little late. No matter who established colonies here, from French to English to Spanish, they all supported slave trade.

=/

Oh! They did that at my elementary school. It was really strange. It wasn't even a really good play, just a little skit.

I'm sure the parents of the actors were very proud.

SHHH! Talk like that leads to happiness and cultural understanding, and we can't have that now, can we?

Why is it when someone says "with all due respect," they really mean, "kiss my ass?"
With all due respect, you're absolutely right.

This unsolicited burn was brought to you by the letter 'S' as in 'Smartass'

Sorry man, I usually don't go for the easy ones but it was right there.
I also don't usually drink 3 cups of coffee after 11PM either, so there you go.
Your post made me laugh out loud, so being me, I had to respond ;)

Seriously though, you ARE totally right.
Every time I've ever heard someone say with all due respect the underlying tone has always been you're a fucking idiot.
I hate it when people play verbal gymnastics like that, be straight or be quiet.

Woo, did I just come up with a semi-clever quote? Maybe late night coffee isn't such a bad idea after all...

I'm sure that was supposed to be sarcastic, but parents are always proud of their kids when they are in school plays. I also wanted to ask if you would consider trying to reaffirm what thanksgiving is about instead of making a new holiday. Maybe we could include in the holiday festivities that we were evil gluttonous people back then and that we still are today.

Of course, if you could come up with a Native American Holiday to celebrate something great they did as a people, then I'm sure that would go over better than SIKRYPFLday.

Oh please. If we're getting rid of a holiday it better be Easter, the holiday that makes a mockery out of supposedly secular governments. (We can keep the chocolate-thing though.)
Actually, Easter is a Very Secular holiday, It's based off of the Pagan Spring Holiday and blessing the return of the nature and life. So is Christmas and Halloween, Christianity just changed Jesus's birthday and death. To Coraline with Pagan Holidays, Making the Gaelic people easier to convert. You see you learned something today.
