Haha, oh god never judge a whole game based on one server. I was on a server the other day I played regularly and when two of my friends were greeting each other, someone else said something. They then complained that he had "ruined the moment" and he was promptly kicked by an admin with the reason of "ruining the moment". Don't get me wrong it was hilarious but I'm just pointing out some people are just mean haha. <- I wasn't apart of it just witnessed it, but funny in a "at least it didnt happen to me" way.

Captcha: nice job

Why thank you : )

Edit: Thanks so much for being nice, guys. I came out of this with a few things learned, a stronger resolve to get good enough to really enjoy this game and about ten more friends on Steam and here. You're really wonderful.
Do a server search for 'noob' and 'beginner'

I have pretty much been exclusively playing the fragmasters.co.uk beginners servers and folk there have been really nice (though the occasional pro hops on to dominate and kinda kill the fun) hardly ever seen any trouble. Maybe check them out? Not sure how your latency will be on a UK server but I tend to not have much trouble on the US servers.

Lastly: if you're not feeling confident and just want to practice to get better, join a server with a lot of players. There are a lot of 30-33 player servers and these allow you to just play without standing out so you can get better.

You've already been given plenty of advice, but two things I can tell you that really helps in FPSes and will help you be a better player:

1) Always be moving around. This makes you a harder target, and increases your survivability.

2) Almost always be looking around like a madman in all directions. If you always just run along looking straight ahead and never bother to check your flanks then you'll die alot (and get backstabbed by spies a lot, though looking around doesn't help too much with that one)

You may think you're already doing these two things, but take a look at a video of someone playing a big name FPS and you'll see that they're moving around like crazy all the time.

BTW, if you ever want to play, my name on Steam is ChickenBandit. I'm pretty good at Pyro, Heavy, Demoman, Engineer, Medic, and Spy so I can be whatever you need me to be if we play together. Also, my clan has some servers you can play on that are pretty laid back, but unfortunately they're usually full.

It's been said elsewhere in this thread but it bears repeating: PLAY MEDIC. In addition to performing the single most important job in the game you'll also be able to watch players who are better than you while healing them. It's neat, really. Play medic long enough and you learn other classes and tactics just by proxy.

So just go out there and have fun :3 It's about the best online FPS out there...it's just got a very poor community.
Thankyou for your post, I've just started playing (yes, since it went F2P, I'm cheap so shoot me...in -game of course :p) and have found that some servers are full of elitist jerks, but for the most part people have been welcoming. Probably doesn't hurt that I'm boosting their stats every time they manage to cap me :p

Well, I have no idea what you were banned for, but I got banned from my favourite six or seven servers (all run by the local cable company), when there was that glitch that let you build multiple engineer buildings: I had hotkeyed it to my normal "explode" button on a less serious server, then accidentally hit it (while playing Scout, no less), and BOOM! Insta-ban.

Donno what happened, due to edit, but basicly what everyone else says. You get banned for trivial things, or just because you are killing the server's host too often. Happens to me all the time.

Spectator doesn't help a lot. I found that learning by doing was a lot easier, and that was when I was fighting agains TF2 vetrans, not FTPers.

Soldier, Pyro, Heavy, and Medic are the easier ones to play. Sniper as well if you are using the basic rifle. Demo is a *****, I'm 30 hours between the basic and beta TF2s, and I still can't play him at all, other then charging targing guys with the eyelander. :|

...the community can be pretty rotten at times. They assumed that because you are new you must be F2P, and so they did their very best to feel inadequate in an effort to help them cope with the change.

See, a lot of them think that the F2P thing will dilute the game with a bunch of idiotic trolls who will refuse to play the game seriously. It's the community that's become bitter, stupid, and unfriendly.

So just go out there and have fun :3 It's about the best online FPS out there...it's just got a very poor community.
I mean this with the utmost respect, discipline, and anti-troll personality I possibly can...

But it's an online multiplayer First Person Shooter, the community isn't poor, it's natural. There is not (in my time playing, 7+ years) a decent community out there that I have run across, and any of the "family-friendly" fail to a horrible extent. The sad truth is that in a PvP or Multiplayer situation, the player must sink or swim. You get the hang of swimming and the community starts throwing rocks at you.

first 1: I was actually asking a question, hence the question mark.

2nd: I don't play often and I do just fine, committing time isn't an issue with this game, Please don't use that excuse.

3rd: There are still some things you need to learn then. Learn sniper locations, check your back, spy check, etc, etc. What's your preferred class? Perhaps I can throw you a tip or two.

4th: If you're still playing, throw me a message with the main classes you usually play, I'll see what I can help you with.

I don't play Heavy or Sniper. If you'd read the rest, you'd know that I play Scout most often. And I STILL take more headshots than anyone else in existence.
As a scout you are NOT design to go toe to toe with other people.

You mostly a runner, and as a runner you are quick. You have to know the Map like the back of your hands.

It's also a know tactic because of your speed You ARE FREAKING dangerous. You can set up ambushs and proceed to fire off shots from behind someone and you're sometime so fast people don't even notice you!

That and you're the suitable choice for getting the flag only if you work with someone to distract the Sentry in that corner.

LIES! I love 2fort. I've spent at least 200 hours on that map alone.

Also, none of your pictures are working
i came across a ton of noobs on 2fort after i had read this thread, and were still pondering if one could really be so bad people got mad. well turns out the server i was on i mananged to get a 30 killstreak with my soldier and had about 50 kills 2 deaths when the round was done. Played a while there, was boring and a bit fun at the same time, some decent players started to come on after a while, also a pretty sick sniper came on, he did beastly.

Also as a tip, try playing on a server with only 1 map so you can learn the map properly, i remember playin a shit ton of badlands payload with my friends when i started.

What server was it? I go on The Roost and Brothers of Chaos 2fort servers a ton. There's a really good mix of new players and veterans, and not many assholes.

Well, that kinda helps...BUT I HAVE NO FRIENDS WHO ARE EVER ON AT THE SAME TIME AS ME!!!!!!

I gave it 13 hours to 'get better'. It didn't. What a waste of money!
the OP was edited, so I can't really see what the problem is. Bad server, not knowing how to play, or a computer issue. However, 13 hours would only work for one of those issues.

I've played for over 4 years, and I still have my bad days. There are always people better than me, and I can imagine that there will be a LOT more people better than the people just starting out. How do you expect to fully grasp the ins and outs of a full fledged game that's been in the making for damn near 10+ years?

Also, if it's a computer issue, time won't solve it, so it's probably not that.

If it's a server issue, I have a simple fix for you.
1. Press ESC.
2. Click on "Disconnect"
3. Click "Browse Servers"
4. Pick a server
5. Join
6. If server is full of asshats and douchebags, repeat steps 1-5
7. Have fun.

Exactly. I've been trying to piece the story together but all I can gather is that you started playing the game, didn't know what you were doing, and instead of just dealing with the learning curve that comes with a game like TF2 you quit.

Yeah people are mean online. It happens. Get over it. I've been mean to people online and people have been mean to me. Get some thick skin, and unless you genuinely didn't enjoy the gameplay or could attribute your lack of fun to something other than "the mean guys said mean things" and you newness to the game I'd say go back to it.
