So, I've just recently got myself a PC that can actually play games and now I'm left wondering what to buy.

I'm completley new to PC gaming but I want to give it a good try. I enjoy most genres, but I'm looking for longevity in any game I buy, so that's either an ability to play online, or an infintely changing campaign.

I have £50($70) to spend and I want to get 3 games, or there abouts.

So what you reccomend? What are the staples of any PC gamers library?

So far I've heard good things about CS:S, COD:4 and Starcraft 2.

I already have Rome and Empire Total War.

Well, at least you've got totalwar don with... though Shogun 2 is probably going to be godly.

Now that that's out of the way:

Victoria II is awesome. Or europa universalis III up to divine wind if you dont' want to get too deep.

Mount and Blade Warband is amazing

SUper Meat Boy

SCREW COD.

Yes, I was recommended CS:S + Garys Mod package. What does it actually consist of though? I'm not all that creative, and from what I can see it simpley allows for creation of levels, games modes etc

Garry's mod obviously.

Oblivion and/or Fallout 3. (dont get these on steam)
Those games are good on console, but playing on PC they 10x better.

If your into valve's stuff orange box and left 4 dead.

We'll need just a little bit more detail as to what kind of games you like. There's alot of stuff there.

I strongly recommend Team Fortress 2 if you are into shooters. Hell, I'll introduce you to a good server (mine, heheheh advertising) and show you the ropes if you want. Garry's Mod is incredibly fun if you like to build and create. Now that I think about it, most of Valve's games are worth it. If you're looking for a scare, go with Amnesia. I would hold off on buying Fallout/Oblivion from Steam, from what I hear it is more difficult to install/create mods (this is entirely from hearsay so feel free to correct me). Super Meat Boy is also fantastic. Tough as nails platforming that you won't want to put down.

And now to sound like the biggest n00b in the world.

How exactly does one go about modding a game? If it's a long process could someone link me to a good guide? I'm entirely new to the whole PC thing.

Apologies for being a dolt.

I'm a big fan of the FPS on console, but I don't know how well that will transfer. I also like both RTS and TBS, although it's a long time since I played a real one of either, so nothing too complicated, for instane I've heard some of the Civ series can turn your head to mush.

RPG and racing are both genres I like aswell.

Alien Swarm is a free to play top down coop shooter.

Also, get Mass Effect 1. Steam is pretty much the only way to find it now.

My 'vote' is for Super Meat Boy as well. Great bang for one's buck.

And it's old but if you like strategy games, you could do a whole lot worse than
Civilization III Complete for ?4,99 or whatever it costs in your currency.

For Racing you want Dirt 2. TBS I'd personally go with Civ 4, yes 4! it is perfect. Civ5 is a very different style, which I'm not a big fan of. And niether will melt your brain :). But if you want more simple in that area, Tropico 3 (Citybuilder) isn't too bad. For RTS its really a point of what do you want to fight with, control schemes are fairly similar here. As well for FPS, depends on what you want out of it. If you want mindless multiplayer COD:BO, MW2, BF2BC are standard offerings. For a little more to it, try Mass Effect 1&2.

There's two types of mods: "Easy install with readme" or "head crushing hack-and-mod".

STALKER 2009 is the easy one. Just read the readme in the download.

Modding Steam games requires an extra step, though. After you download your game, you have to go to where you installed Steam, open the folder, open "steamapps", open "common", then find the appropriate game folder.
