First of all, Orange Box. It's a box of pure awesome.
It costs not much, and contains:
-Half Life 2
-Half Life 2: Episode 1
-Half Life 2: Episode 2
-Team Fortress 2
-Portal

If you want a RPG/Action game, pick up any Mass Effect.
If you want non complicated strategy, pick up latest Civilization (it has been casualized)
If you want FPS, pick up Call Of Duty 4, best part of the series.
If you want to build something and create, pick up Garry's Mod (and check out it's site)

So, I've just recently got myself a PC that can actually play games and now I'm left wondering what to buy.

I'm completley new to PC gaming but I want to give it a good try. I enjoy most genres, but I'm looking for longevity in any game I buy, so that's either an ability to play online, or an infintely changing campaign.

I have £50($70) to spend and I want to get 3 games, or there abouts.

So what you reccomend? What are the staples of any PC gamers library?

So far I've heard good things about CS:S, COD:4 and Starcraft 2.

I already have Rome and Empire Total War.
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/469/ Orange box, £17 and contains one of the best action games of all time, an online FPS with a huge community and Portal, the spawn of all things cake.

http://store.steampowered.com/sub/219/ £15 CS:source (brilliant FPS goodness) + garrys mod (a sandbox creative mod)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/900883/?snr=1_6_4__13 Oblivion (+DLC), £20 If you want an 'infintely changing campaign' you cant go wrong. HUNDEREDS of hours of played time are not uncommon. Oh and the best modding community ever.

That comes to a total of £51.97 and has thousands of hours of entertainment capacity, I have personally clocked up uncountable hours on them and would recommend to anyone.

Oh, and welcome to the PC gaming community, don't be an elitist, it gives us a bad name.

Orange Box. for the price of one old game, you get 5 games, and 5 of the best games of the decade. Last decade, at least. Next, Civ 5. Occasionally, people who have played other Civ games don't appreciate the changes , but the game is excellent. It damn near ruined me, hitting 100+ hours in a little over a week (My vacation week). Lastly, a Bioware game in you flavor of choice (Likely, your chooseing between Mass Effect and Dragon Age). If you havn't played them before, they are at there peak on PC. Lastly, remember that Alien Swarm is a fun, simple, excellent (If slightly content-light) game that is absolutely free. And watch those Steam sales! you can get endless gaming for dirt cheap through those alone.

Ooh, gotta add something: Its not on Steam, but Starcraft 2 is absolutely excellent. It is a significant evolution, not revolution, compared to the original, and there is a reason its so damn popular.

Fallout, Fallout 2, KotOR, Team Fortress 2, Garry's Mod, Day of Defeat, Half Life, Half life 2, Super Meat Boy, VVVVV, Poker Night at the Inventory. The list could go on.

I suggest just looking for the deals when a game you like comes out.

Titan Quest Gold

STALKER (Try Shadow of Chernobyl first, modded with STALKER 2009)

Civilization V (if it goes on sale)
I'd second this list, though Call of Pripyat is better than Shadow of Chernobyl.

The other thing is, I might say just get Titan Quest, not the gold pack unless you really like Diablo clones.
