Just upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7, and nothing's working. Any ideas why?

^ The title pretty much sums it up. I got a laptop for Christmas which had Vista installed on it. I also got a "Free Windows 7 Upgrade" disc as part of the offer, which sounded like a pretty damn good deal. Upgrading to 7 didn't seem like a bad idea, so I installed it yesterday. The installation had three stages: preparation, installation, and finalization. The first two went fine, with no error messages to be found. The third seemed to be going quite well, but as it was going to take a while, I left the room to fix myself something to eat. When I returned, the screen was completely blank, with the exception of my wallpaper. My programs seem to be working in the background, but without Windows Explorer there's no way to access them. Has this happened to any of you guys?

Sorry I had to.
I already have Googled for tech support, but I'm getting nothing of use. I was rather hoping someone on The Escapist would have some advice I could actually use.

Drastic but...format the hard drive and reinstall? I'm afraid I've got no ideas.

Then why post?

Hmm if all that's missing is windows explorer then try to get into the task manager (I think cntrl+alt+del should still pop it up) or the run menu (cntrl+R I think does it) then "New task/process" then "explorer.exe".
Sorry, that's the most detailed I can get really. My gf had the same problem and that's how we ended up fixing it. Hasn't happened since.

OT: No, idea.
I still use XP.
Because it works
I'd still be using XP if it wasn't considered obsolete by most retailers. Unfortunately, they just don't sell that many PCs with it installed.

(And thanks for the "Fanboy's Law" thing. Must use that next time someone tries to convert me to Apple)

Did you do a fresh installation (format, etc) or an upgrade from vista?

Task Manager doesn't seem to be working. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del just brings up a black screen. I could probably try to use it while working blind, but that might cause a few problems.

Gonna have some trouble playing games though aren't you *snicker*

OT: Try CTRL+ALT+DEL and going running the explorer process 'explorer.exe.' If that fails format the harddrive and reinstall from there.

As for you, have you tried opening up task manager with CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and manually starting explorer.exe from the processes tab?

OR starting in safe mode?

Hmm, try restarting in safe mode and try the task manager again.
If that fails, then I'm going to have to say just reinstall Windows 7 and watch it to see if any errors pop up.

I upgraded from Vista.
I'd personally just stick the Win7 disk back in, format and fresh install then.

By doing the upgrade you're asking for problems somewhere down the line even if you get around the current one.

Also did this happen just now and if yes, the obvious question, have you tried restarting?

Hm, something similar happened to someone I know they ended up having to send it in for repair. Annoying, I know, but the sooner you send it in the sooner you'll get it back. Not that I'm saying you should resort to it immediately. Just remember that it's an option.

Good luck!

I use XP, upgraded to 7. I had no trouble running Crysis, Fallout 3, Dragon age: Origins, Mass Effect, Divinity II...

Can leopard do all of those?

And to pre-empt your argument that may feature the words "boot" and "camp", I'll say "good luck upgrading your graphics card."

Also, you use a mac, your argument is invalid

Has restarting fixed anything?

Yeah, I've tried to restart in safe mode, and the only change is that I can access the Sidebar and a few gadgets on it. I would try to fresh install 7, but I can't see the Installshield window. I think I might just need to send it in for repairs.
