^ The title pretty much sums it up. I got a laptop for Christmas which had Vista installed on it. I also got a "Free Windows 7 Upgrade" disc as part of the offer, which sounded like a pretty damn good deal. Upgrading to 7 didn't seem like a bad idea, so I installed it yesterday. The installation had three stages: preparation, installation, and finalization. The first two went fine, with no error messages to be found. The third seemed to be going quite well, but as it was going to take a while, I left the room to fix myself something to eat. When I returned, the screen was completely blank, with the exception of my wallpaper. My programs seem to be working in the background, but without Windows Explorer there's no way to access them. Has this happened to any of you guys?
Just upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7, and nothing's working. Any ideas why?

Hmm if all that's missing is windows explorer then try to get into the task manager (I think cntrl+alt+del should still pop it up) or the run menu (cntrl+R I think does it) then "New task/process" then "explorer.exe".
Sorry, that's the most detailed I can get really. My gf had the same problem and that's how we ended up fixing it. Hasn't happened since.
I'd still be using XP if it wasn't considered obsolete by most retailers. Unfortunately, they just don't sell that many PCs with it installed.TheNamlessGuy said:

Task Manager doesn't seem to be working. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del just brings up a black screen. I could probably try to use it while working blind, but that might cause a few problems.megapenguinx said:

As for you, have you tried opening up task manager with CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and manually starting explorer.exe from the processes tab?bobknowsall said:

By doing the upgrade you're asking for problems somewhere down the line even if you get around the current one.
Also did this happen just now and if yes, the obvious question, have you tried restarting?
Hm, something similar happened to someone I know they ended up having to send it in for repair. Annoying, I know, but the sooner you send it in the sooner you'll get it back. Not that I'm saying you should resort to it immediately. Just remember that it's an option.
