The film snapped in 2.

... I hope by "film" you mean a DVD or Blu-ray disc and NOT 16-mm or VHS film. Because if it isn't on digital media then your cinema is officially in the stone age.
Hate to break to you but most cinemas dont run DVD/Blu-Ray systems, they still use big rolls of film that's larger then your arm-span and longer then 1km (0.75 Miles) as such:

the ones I worked with were a bit older and larger but that's the general size. (plus a HUGE spindle near it holding and collecting the film.

Dude, it's completely justified. They fucked up, you payed the full bloody price to see it, if you didn't get some sort of compensation then you're stupid to not pirate it.
See it like this, if someone invets something, that person has the rigth to decide who shall et to use this something right?

EDIT: Oh wait, nevermind. You were talking about the OP's example. Sorry.

Things are different across the pond. We had a leading case where the defendant used that as a defence. He was still convicted.
I don't think you understood what i said. Yes, he should have been convicted. Its the law. However, just because its illegal does not make it morally wrong. It is possible to do something "illegal" and not feel guilty or bad about it. That was my point. That law and morality are not intrinsically related.
