I thought Will Young did win, I remember that all of Gareth Gates' fans at my school were whining that the whole competition was a fix because they couldn't get through when they tried to vote for Gareth Gates to win. But I think he is the only person to win one of those shows and actually have a career when I think about it...

I wouldn't say that I hated any particular band, but I have been mildly irritated by the amount of One direction merchandise on display in HMV, but I guess that what sells these days.
You are right, my mistake.

Gareth Gates came second and Will Young won that one. Got myself mixed up there.

Cheers for pointing that out for me.
Its alright. I'm actually slightly ashamed that I remember that, but it was such big news at the time it was difficult to ignore.

Why do you think people listened to elvis, the beatles , pink floyd , led zeppelin or Metallica ? why do you think that music got so popular? Because it was good? Because it was culturally relevant? NO ! Because it pissed parents off . kids and teenagers listened to that music because it pissed everyone else off and because at the time their anti government / anti authority/ anti religious themes were still a novelty . but the 15 yearolds of the 70s and 80s are the 30 something?s of today and now have kids of their own . do you think today?s parents are going to get angry if little Suzy comes home with an ozzy osbourne album? Or a NIN CD? NO! they are going to be fucking proud ?..and that?s not what a rebellious 17 yearold wants . so instead they are doing the exact same things their parents did , they are listening to the complete opposite of what their parents love .It pains me to say this but justin bieber is today?s ozzy osbourne ??.. they want you to be angry they want you to say their music is dumb because that?s the whole point of it . why do you think early metal was so into satanic symbolism?

Music is the same as it?s always been , it keeps trying to be different .

Well I hate Nicki Minaj because compared to other female rappers (Eve, Queen Latifah, Lil' Kim etc.) she is a talentless hack that relies on exploiting her sexuality to stand out.
...As well as relentlessly catchy hooks (Starships), club-aimed sound walls (Pound The Alarm), songwriting with genuine effort (Your Love, Starships, Va Va Voom, etc), and moments of greatness (Moment 4 Life, and some of her features are fantastic).

It's not them it's their crazy intolerant fans that get me. Now Nikki Minaj really does do my head in because she's just an awful musician, an awful influence and a pain in the ass. However 1 Direction, Bieber, Jedward (in Ireland) are all ok, it's their fanatical fans who attack you for your differing taste that gets me. However if you like their music, fair enough, as long as it's harmless.

if you happen to work in an environment where you are forced to listen to their music for 8 hours a day and have to listen to people talk about how great they are despite being so mediocre, you can get really mad, and the usual "lol don't listen to them" just doesn't work for that. it's also really sad that we throw money at those people while other artist who put more effort and talent into their music have to worry about how to make money when they are too old to go on tour.

Metal is nice. I like metal. The gods made it and saw it was good.

Well I don't know about others but I hate what they stand for rather than them as people (though somebody needs to give Beiber a good slap). They exist to make themselves and their labels money, that is why they make music. They don't make it because they love to, or because they have a message, it's all for the money. Hell I remember watching something about Nicki Minaj and she originally tried to be an actor but gave up after one audition so she went to singing and got picked up instantly. To me that's just a big slap in the face to all the real artists out they who try their hardest their whole lives and get nowhere. I don't even hate her music, some songs are alright, but she definitely does not deserve the level of fame that she has.

Her music? Pffft. The only good Nicki Minaj songs tend to be backed by Calvin Harris or David Guetta. Those are the ones with the awesome beats. Those two can legitimately make music. Nicki Minaj just...um. Well. She's like...a gimmick that has become self aware.

The fact that the marketing behind all of these bands promote them to everyone and not just a specified target audience. The fact that all of these people (apart from maybe Nicki Minaj, she can actually rap well when she has good writing eg Monster by Kanye West) are manufactured and not genuine musicians. These people do not care about music, they care about money, image and nothing else.

All I know is that Justin Beiber was on TV and he went over schedule, and it meant that my TV show wasn't on when I tuned in for it! Football does this too, and I'm none too keen on football, either.

I can't say I hate him though (not in the same way I hate, say, ponies... not those MLP ponies specifically, but actual ponies. They're just horses that are terrible at being horses! And one bit me!), actually it's kinda sad when you think about it, once the hype dies down, all he's got in his future is appearing in whatever the future equivalent of reality TV and/or a crippling drug addiction. Or, it would be sad, if it wasn't exactly what he deserves.

And even then she looks like a walking mannequin that someone attached balloons to the ass of. *shudder*

I also dislike Nikki, obviously.

Because they reduce music to a shallow celebration of trite clichés and materialism and pig-headed self-gratification. Those artists produce easy sugary bullshit that the masses will gobble up; they're the fast food chains of the music industry. People are being drip-fed crap by monolithic record companies, from birth, until that's all they have a taste for. And that's disgusting, and a shame.

Snip: Post 30 if anyone's interested.
I agree with most of what you've said, but you're being too nostalgic. There are still plenty of bands and individuals who're innovating now; they're just pushed to the wayside rather than held up by the mainstream music industry. You just have to look into the more obscure or extreme corners of music instead. Metal (especially prog metal) has a monopoly on all of the best and most interesting musical minds at the moment, but some other fringe genres breed plenty of them too.

From softest to heaviest:
I'll do no introductions; just give each one a good listen.

These recommendations go out to anyone who's bored of their current music or thinks that all modern music is shite.

Her monster feature was great but she still is nothing compared to the others.

I honestly wasn't surprised when it was revealed that she had butt implants.
