Well Hanako's act is certainly dark. Kind of glad we got the one we did. It seems the general trend the Devs were going for was one that was way more dramatic and emphasized extreme grimness. In my opinion, that would have made the game worse, mainly because so many other games have done something like that, especially School Days, and if I wanted to play School Days, I'd probably play School Days, not a game that's like School Days, although the two games would still have been different in a thematical sense, I doubt I'd be willing to sink time in both of them, and would just end of up choosing one.
I like Beta Shizune's though. Because Misha and Shizune can die. Which is the ending I would aim for. Because I hate them the most out of the entire cast.

I actually liked Shizune's beta-arc a bit better to be honest. It seems like it have more... More in it. It might happend stuff every once in a while other than student council work. But Hanako's beta arc... DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN. That's freakin' dark. Do she die whatever you do? Isn't it any way to prevent her to kill herself or kill Hisao? That's just messed up.

Looked it up. Apparently there's two versions of the script in there, both with major differences from the original game and from each other. It looks like they were in the middle of a script revision from one version to the other. Of special note is that Hanako's true ending is buried in the old script -- apparently in her true ending,Spector29 said:

Apparently you get to this true ending by first playing through Hanako's regular arc, then playing Lilly's arc up to a certain point, at which point one of the decisions lets you switch from Lilly to Hanako. It's that Hanako arc that has the true ending.
The reason you have to do Hanako's regular story once before you can get the true ending is because one of the choices sets a flag that stays set through subsequent playthroughs. There's some really interesting stuff in here.

It has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux, as well as torrents for each. If that doesn't work, then I suggest finding an unoffical torrent. It's free after all, so who gives a crap?
