In return for my loyalty, I was given an honorary title of court. This totally makes up for losing the use of my testicles!
Always the sign of a good Crusader Kings 2 playthrough. Keep it up, I just read through your first two updates and they made for a fun read. Good work!

Thanks for the kind words! And thanks to all who are reading and just lurking!

I haven't seen anyone give any criticisms yet, so if anyone feels my technical skills could use some improvement or some problems with screenshots, or anything like that please let me know. First time doing something like this and I'd like to improve.

Also, if anyone wants to discuss CK2 or discuss the LP or even do something similar to me but another country or even a tutorial for those who may be unfamiliar, please do so! I don't want to make people feel like this is just me running through a play through of CK2 and you guys can't contribute.

once again, enjoyed the update, thankfully playing my irish saves I haven't been castrated yet, us catholics aren't so harsh :D

but really, fuck that kid, assassins creed 5: kill that dumb castrating fuck

I honestly don't have any criticisms I can really shoot for..this has been a fun read so far.

Maybe I missed it, but did you list any long term goals you have in mind? or any specific thing you'd like to do with each heir that you play as?(can be anything from stats to conquering certain lands or changing of the popes,etc...) Besides that keep it up!

Hanging onto long term goals in the Byzantine Empire is difficult because it's such a clusterfuck. You either get boned by the muslims to the east or the absurd amount of infighting that seems very difficult to avoid. At least, that's how my attempts at playing the Byzantine Empire went, but maybe there are some good strategies against this I don't know about.

Theoretically, the goal would be the restoration of the Roman Empire, which is a special event for the Byzantines, introduced in their own mini-expansion, which also adds all the lovely blinding and castration we've been enjoying. But it ain't easy, since even if you hold onto internal stability, you need to conquer certain lands, like the city of Rome, obviously enough, which means messing with the pope. You can imagine what the catholics think of this.

Hell, now I feel like trying it myself again!

...there goes my afternoon.

You can try what I call the Archduke trick.
This is something I use mostly for the Holy Roman Empire but it should work with the Byzantine Empire: select a vassal instead of the emperor, turn your fiefdom into an elective regime as soon as possible, prefer meritocratic matrimony to political expediency (that is: marry your children and courtiers to smart commoners instead of inbred scions of powerful families, give the conquered provinces to your smartest vassals, regardless of their pedigree), and build your power base from here, but Never try to seize the imperial throne for yourself, at least until the second half of the fourteenth century.
The empire will go from one succession crisis to the next, but the elective monarchy and your much-smarter-than-average court will pretty much ensure one big unbroken line of smart to exceptionally gifted rulers keeping their ever expanding domain stable.
Once one third to one half of the empire's populace answer to you, you can then make your bid for the imperial throne and eliminate the much less talented dynasties that do not immediately bend the knee.

Say, if you capture any enemy noble or his uncle, could you just castrate them on whim? Or is this some random event, like a box just pops up saying "Your highness, are you in the mood to de-penify some of the bastards in your prison?" and the only answer is "HELL YEAH!"?

Well long term goal #1 is, as should always be, is keeping the dynasty strong. I know that should go without saying, but our duke has only one blood relative, his son, and is castrated so isn't going to have another except through his son. So if anything happens to our son before he can have an heir, the game is over. We're on really precarious ground and have to be really careful until the son is in power.

But the only real goal I'm going to have is becoming emperor. I'm unsure how long that will take, and could happen in the next update, or could take until 1450. Most heirs will have this goal in mind, unless they are content. In which case, I'm likely to play the role of lap dog and be happy to scoop up the scraps our glorious castrating liege give us, while I find other ways to entertain you guys.

You can do it to anyone you capture as the Byzantines. Catholics can't do anything similar, but pagans can make female prisoners their concubines (Muslims can as well). Which you can use to great effect if you capture a genius daughter of a guy you really hate. "Oh don't want to pay the ransom fee for your daughter? Ok, I'll just fuck her night and day until you do." Crusader Kings 2!

Oh my god, that kid is Jofferey levels of evil, like capturing an enemy's grand-daughter and blinding her! The fuck!? I've never seen CK2 from the Byzantines perspective and I've only ever played it EU3 and HoI so I'm definitely gonna keep following this.

[HEADING=2]Update 3: War and Peace[/HEADING]

The war in Greece was going to wind down soon. The Imperial Army had destroyed most of the Grecian army and all that remained was to mop up the resistance.

The traveling minstrels had come back from last year. Georgios was impressed that I was able to remember the exact people who had come. Though I thought nothing of it.

Another Greek prisoner had been blinded as part of his release by the Basileus. Though most of the courts would be outraged at the casual use of torture on innocents, most douxs had been castrated or blinded and thus had a more...personal objection to it.

I noticed that my son did not seem to have a sense of justice, of right and wrong in the world. I tried to take him aside to talk about it, but he did not seem to care, and just laughed it off as he would one day be doux and his word was all that mattered. My anger started to rise in me, and I soon became uncontrollable. I couldn't control myself as I hit him, he seemed shocked and didn't know how to react. Until he spit in my face. I quickly overpowered him and just started yelling at him that he was to never harm another without it being just. He soon pointed out that I was harming him, but I said a brat needed to know his place. He started crying.

Later, he came to my chambers and apologized for his beliefs. I quickly apologized as well. I was so worried that he would became everything I hated, everything I feared. I never wanted to hurt him, but he said he understood. He didn't want to go astray and said he hoped to improve himself. Though I would still feel guilty, my worries were at least assuaged.

Not a week later, Leon fell ill. He couldn't leave bed, his head burned up, and the cough seemed to never stop. I stayed by his bed, even while he slept. I wondered if this my penance for treating my son with contempt not a week earlier. I wondered why god had forsaken me yet again. Will my penance never end? Part of me wanted to pray for this to go away, the other part of me didn't know what to do. As I watched my son teeter on the balance of life. All I could do was watch.

It was at this time I received word that the war with Greece was over. Our "glorious" Basileus had won and claimed imperial territory for Rome. I could not even muster a care in my body.

After several weeks, Leon started to improve and was able to get out of bed once again! In celebration of his recovery, I decided to renovate the town surrounding the keep. I wanted the town to both look nicer, and hopefully provide more taxes in the future. Improving the lives of my citizens was a nice plus too.

It was going to cost a bit and take a while though.

The Doux of Athens had thrown his support in for Prince Leon to become the new Emperor. If several douxs alligned with him as well, there may be enough support for him to finally replace the brat!

As I was in my study one night, little Leon ran into the room and shouted as loud as he could "I CAN BREATHE!!!" It was good to see the boy so happy after I watched him nearly die a month ago.

My guards brought a young man to my chambers one night and told me they found him copying several state documents. I asked him who he worked for, and he just begged for forgiveness, he was promised some bread if he copied those documents and brought them back to cloaked man outside. My guards told me that they weren't able to find the man that he spoke about. Though I wanted him to be punished, I did not want to become what I hated and ordered his release against the wishes of my guards. The man thanked me before leaving the keep as quickly as he could.

More wars for the Imperial crown.

As we sat down for dinner, I noticed that Leon had not joined us. I asked Constance where he was and she didn't know either. As I asked around, one of the guards told me that he had gone to the dungeons, with my permission. My heart stopped as I raced to the dungeons just in time to see the boy coming out with a knife in hand, covered in blood. I started crying, and couldn't stop. Leon tried to calm me before crying himself. He didn't know why I was upset. I told him I didn't know what he did, and I don't ever want to know. But I wanted him to never want to do that again. He said ok.

After working with him a bit more, he had become a patient lad. Though I wish he was a bit more kind, so long as he believe in justice, I was satisfied.

Several months later, life had become even more boring than usual. One of my courtiers suggested we go hunting! I thought that would be something nice to do, and accompanied him.

After several hours, we had yet to see a creature moving around and I said I was done. The courtier suggested we stay out a little while longer, but I could tell that nothing good would come of it. Though I planned to go back home and stay in the regular routine, my Magistros suggested I take up falconing. I thought it would be neat and agreed.

Say what you want about the cruel child, he knew politics well. He had castrated the doux of Cyprus who had no children. Thus the Basileus was "forced" to take the land to prevent war.

Constance was very quiet and in prayer constantly after receiving a letter from her brother detailing the wars going on in England. It was all out chaos and may take a miracle for the King to get things under control. Things could get worse, since the king was excommunicated.

For whatever reason, the imperial army only sent 1k troops to assault the Italians. This army was quickly wiped out and the douxs wanted blood for this incompetence. The general in charge was soon executed and would be sent with the new army to be buried next to the men he sent to their death. Though a bit cruel, it did serve him right.

(screenshot missing)

One night as the keep prepared for bed, a guard came to my quarters telling me a visitor had requested my prescience. Upon reaching the gate I found a merchant and his caravan asking me if they could stay the night. Though I wanted to simply send them on their way, I decided one night would be ok.

They began to regale me with tales of a far away land and the riches contained within.

As thanks, they gave me a eunuch as a present. He said he could be a great spymaster and would be glad to protect me from any threat from the shadows.

I compared the man to my current spymaster and agreed that he was better. I told Georgios that I felt his services were no longer needed, and thanked him. Though I knew he was a bit peeved, I rewarded competence over friendships.

The new general decided to send a bit more than 1k troops.

This seemed to work.

Though Leon was scaring me with his danger seeking ways, I was impressed and felt it would make him a greater doux.

After several years, the improvements made to the town had been completed. Though only a blind man would compare it to Rome or Constantinople, it was at least a nice upgrade from before.

I decided to implement a tax increase on the cities. Though the mayors fought hard against this. I soon started to feel a little down and had trouble refuting them as I felt incredibly tired.

I soon could not leave my bed, my head burned as I struggled to breathe. Though I would still have to fight for the tax increase and had no time to rest.

The votes however, were not close. The feudal lords approved it, while the cities didn't. Guess who had more power though?

I sent my magistros, Prince Leon, to Constantinople to hopefully convince the emperor of my benevolence. As well, I was hoping he may be able to gather some intelligence on what was happening in the capital.

The war had finally come to an end with a surprise. The Imperial court contained an Italian count for the first time in hundreds of years. Maybe we would soon be able to reclaim Rome as well?

Constance told me that her prayers had been answered as her brother was able to win his wars after several miraculous battles that killed several of the rebelling dukes. I was glad god answered her prayers, even if he didn't answer mine.

Leon had started to show signs of a philosopher. Though in another world, I may have been more supportive of him, I felt he needed to concentrate on improving himself.

He took my words to heart and worked hard on becoming a better man.

"I CAN BREATHE!!!" I shouted that morning to the dismay of Constance and approving laughter of Leon.

Then on February 17th, I noticed Prince Leon riding into my keep to inform me of his mission. He told me that the Patriarch had been convinced that I was a good man, and was more likely to support my agenda. While I was glad that a friend had been made in the imperial capital, that was not his mission. He said, "Well, things got complicated and I had to come home." I sighed and asked why...

Soon, several douxs and counts joined Doux Ioannes in his war to depose the "Glorious Baslieus". Their power seemed great, and I wondered where my loyalty would lie.

My strageos had passed and I would need a strong army no matter which side I would choose.

I found an old Russian man who was known as one of the best swordsman from his land. Though I hoped for a younger candidate, my court simply did not have enough sway to land some of the better generals and asked him to join my court.

He accepted on the condition that I help him gain back his land in Russia. I blankly stared at him before nodding my head. Upon his leaving I stared at Prince Leon before we both just shook our heads and shrugged.

Rebel forces had found the weaker armies of the crown that had yet to form up and were attacking. If they could deal a quick blow, this war may go their way.

Though, as always, the emperor had more where that came from.

An epic battle raged between the two armies for more than two weeks. Several thousand men lay dead, generals and douxs lie dead. The outcome would decide the fate of the war.

The doux of Athens began to gather more forces with the hope of turning the tide of the battle before the rebels could lose, though the doux of Krete had landed troops at Constantinople instead of aiding the battling forces at Athens.

The rebels lost, and with it the war would soon go against them.

Ioannes had perished and with it, the rebel cause lost all morale. I felt secure that I had chosen the correct side.

The rebels scattered as the Imperials unified. It would be their downfall as the empire would simply mop up the remains of the rebel forces.

A bishop apparently overheard my opinions on that "god" thing. Needless to say, he was not pleased.

Though he was somehow impressed with my memory of the same two traveling entertainers. The holy father has a sense of humor after all.

The Imperials marched on Constantinople in relief of the capital. The rebels were nearly wiped out.

The last remaining army had been found and attacked in the mountains. Though it was a smart defensive tactics, they were still outnumbered 3:1. The result had already been decided.

I found an inn nearby that was rather broken down and had clearly been abandoned by its previous owner. I decided to take the inn for myself and improve it. Hoping to not only make a profit, but to also improve my stewardship skills.

I liked the name "Mead Fountain" as it sounded a bit more upscale, though not too upscale. I hired several craftsmen to begin renovations before services could open again.

The innkeeper I hired told me about a trick that he had picked up. By offering free salty snacks, we could increase the amount of drinks ordered by our customers. He suggested we put just a dash of salt, but I asked for a bit more. He tasted it after, and said they still tasted good but had a taste of salt as he downed a glass of mead. I was worried it was too much but we'd have to wait and see.

For entertainment, I settled on the bard. Though I almost hired the ass out of curiosity.

Though not the best, people did enjoy him.

As the night wore on, I was worried about what we would run out of first- Mead or Turnips!

All in all, It was a nice experiment but not something I wanted to do forever. I put it on sale for a bit more than I bought it at and quickly found a buyer. I hoped to take what I learned back to my court to improve my governing ability.

After improving my ability, I realized that my steward was not as good as I thought he was. He simply used my lack of knowledge against me. I told him that he better shape up or I would find a better steward. Though he left that day angry, he did seem to improve afterwards. Hopefully he'll keep getting better.

Little Leon had so many questions and wanted to associate with the adults instead of the kids. I was more than happy at night to introduce the guests to the pride of my life.

Soon Doux Nikephoros sent me a message about a match of tzykanion. Though part of me didn't want to go. Last time I went I had such great fun, that I decided to go again and made sure that Constance came too. Though it was good to have fun, it was better to see her smile.

Though I had lost the match, the doux came up to me put his hand on my shoulder and told me "We have to do this again some time! That was great fun!" I smiled and agreed. As I went back to my keep, smelling not too fresh at this point, I noticed that there wasn't a crowd inside the town. As I reached the castle, there were a lot of faces with concern staring at me. I wondered what was going on, until I saw it and my heart sank. The Imperial carriage. The Basileus was here.

As I left my carriage, the young Basileus and his guard approached me. "May I speak to you alone, Doux Valerios?" My lips were quivering as I agreed and showed him to a private room. I looked behind me to see the worry in Constance's eyes. I wonder if she could see the worry in mine.

As we entered my study and I closed the door, I apologized for the smell as I had just gotten- "Enough Valerios. I didn't come down to talk about what you smell like." I nodded and apologized. I was such a coward, but I wasn't worried about what he'd do to me, but more what he would do to Leon, or Constance. The thought made me quake, I began sweating profusely as the boy looked at me, I wondered if he could see the fear in me. "I came down here because there's something I needed to tell you." I was caught off guard, and was silent for a moment. I worked up the courage to ask him what he wanted to tell me? The boy looked at the ground, as I could see tears well up in his eyes. He slowly looked at me, as my jaw dropped. He then opened his mouth as he would befuddle my mind further:

"I'm sorry, Valerios."

Sorry for taking so long on this update. I've got the next part already played, just a matter of editing and writing it out. I'll try and get it done this weekend.

laughed hard at that last part, it's always hilarious to see the game say something like that, but then the persons actions say an entirely different story.

no worries about the long update :D

quick question though, I'm trying a byzantine playthrough myself, and I started off low (count level I believe?) so my council is very weak when it comes to stats, how do you go about gathering much better allies to your court? I've tried bribing my way through people and even trying to marry some people into my court, but I'm usually not able to select them for a position after I've gotten them to my court (if I even get that far). It doesn't help that alot of my members are getting picked off like flies for either being old as saggy tits or getting captured/killed for being in other peoples territory for missions. Besides this I think I'm doing pretty damn good, by a sheer stroke of luck I was able to get my son marrying into the byzantine emperor's family (his lowest daughter, but holy hell the 3 siblings above her ended up dying each year in a row so WELCOME TO THE THRONE BABYYYY, the only shitty thing was as soon as my son was married the entire continent threw a shit fit and took the power away from my son/daughter in law before I could take control of him as a character  )

The best way to find any character in the game (This includes wives!!!) is to use the character finder button in the bottom right corner. When you click on it, there's several catagories you can filter by (ex: married status, religion, culture, gender) then, when you find the category you like, you can sort by stat. The stats are the regular stats of the game (diplomacy, martial, etc.,) as well as age! So if you want to find the best diplomat in the world, don't use a filter, and sort by diplomacy.

Be warned though that this can take a long time. Those of other religions are very unlikely to join you, and there's a code that gives a "No reason to move" modifer, even if you want to give them a job. You usually have to find someone who has a claim on a territory that their liege owns. They are more likely to join you.

That sucks about your kid. I had something similar happen to a kid that was going to be HRE. As soon as his dad got into power, the entire HRE dissolved into a civil war and he only owned one province.

I like to imagine Basilius suddenly hitting puberty and being struck with the horrible realization of "Oh God, is that what I've been doing to people? I just thought... oh jeez... damn." one morning when the whole concept of castrating people suddenly makes sense.

I mean in the evil little bastards defense, he was just a kid and when I was a kid if you'd handed me ultimate power I'd be willing to bet I'd have been an evil little tyrant as well.

Kids eh!

yeah this is how I've been trying to find good people, but unfortunately all the high stat people were of different religions/cultures so i couldn't entice them to come to my court....damn byzantine empire is filled with inbred's who have the stats of a 5 year old.

[HEADING=2]Update 4: One Man's Catastrophe, is another Man's Opportunity[/HEADING]

I stared at the Basileus, slack jawed and wide eyed as I could not believe I had heard those words out of his mouth.

I'm sorry

Was he just mocking me? Was he so bored of castrating and blinding any and all in his empire that he would make a personal tour of his domain just to laugh at those he had caused so much misfortune?

"Will you say something? I'm trying to apologize to me and you just gape at me?"

I finally stuttered out a response, "You have to forgive me, I just didn't expect...you to ever beg forgiveness from another human being"

He sighed before continuing, "I...understand. As I've grown older I've started to realize what has been done to people in my name. I don't ask that you forgive me, just that you're willing to believe that I want to change and be a different person as I come of age."

I paused and began to ponder on what he said. I felt conflicted and my emotions ran all over. I finally told him that I just couldn't believe him. Not a single doux remained that didn't feel the effects of his reign of terror.

"Then tell me, what can I do to prove I want to change? To prove that I can be a good man like my father was?"

When he told me that, it struck me. Alexios died before the kid could even walk. The Basileus had never met his father, though heard from everyone what a kind smart man he was. As I looked unto the child, I realized that this wasn't a demon, he wasn't the spawn of Satan here to bring a reign of terror. This was a confused and lonely child. Never knowing his father, yet looking up to him all the same. Having complete power, yet not realizing what that entailed- and still didn't. I took pity on him as I opened my mouth.

"This war is almost over, and the douxs that rebelled against you have almost all died in battle. The current rulers are mere children. Spare the rebels, don't punish them for rebelling."

He became clearly upset at this proposal before saying "Spare them? They rebelled with the intent of deposing me! How will peop-"

"They rebel against you because you have tortured and maimed most of your vassals. Were they rebels? Yes, but we rebel to stop you for your cruelty. Please spare them."

He quit speaking and stared at the floor before nodding his head. He turned towards the door and stopped before heading out "What was my father like?" he asked. I paused before I said "He was a good man, I hope you make him proud." He had his back to me, but I could hear the tears as he closed the door. After he left I sighed and beckoned for a servant to come to me with a new pair of pants, for the pair I had on seemed to be soiled for some reason.

Not trusting the Basileus, I worked in the shadows to set up a faction to give more independence to the vassals in case the kid was lying. We would have to see...

The Patriarch had served since before Alexios and was very critical of the current Basileus.

The new Patriarch did not seem to truly believe what he said though. His opponents said that he simply hadn't studied enough lecture to truly understand god's love though.

My son Leon finally celebrated his 16th birthday and was now a man! I was upset that he hadn't been paying enough attention to his education...though not as disappointed as I was in his haircut.

I asked my court for a list of some of the best potential wives for Leon, and didn't have to go far down the list to find the absolute perfect woman.

A little younger than Leon, she was kind, honest, diligent, and charitable. Known to be a genius and to simply pick up what could take others hours to understand.

Though she was too young to marry, I managed to get her father to agree to a betrothal. Though she was not of royal blood, I did not care.
I had little time to celebrate though.

The rebellion had ended with a clear Imperial victory. It was now the moment of truth for the Basileus. I wanted to tell my Magistros to keep me as updated as possible on the happenings of the prisoners...before realizing he had been imprisoned.

I told Leon that he would be my new Magistros. Though not as good as Prince Leon, he was still decent.

I laughed at how much trouble these events used to be for me. I now relish for the chance to enjoy a day out with the other douxs, and life itself has seemed a little less burdensome.

When I returned from the day out, Leon ran up to me to tell me that the Count had been released. I had asked what the punishment was, knowing full well that the Basileus wouldn't keep his word.

"That was it?" I couldn't help but blurt out. Leon smiled and said the Basileus must be a changed man. I was stunned as it dawned on me that Leon may be right. There was still the issue of the children Douxs though. My loyalty rested with their safe being.

On the 16th birthday of Fortunata, I sent a message to her father asking for him to honor the betrothal.

He not only responded positively, but he sent a dowry as well! Though I sent it back in order to build a solid relationship with the man.

Prince Leon came to my court to tell me in person about his release.

His conditions were a ransom of 10 gold. Same as the last time. I expressed happiness at his release, though secretly wondered why the Basileus had been so forgiving to him. Prince Leon was usually the rallying cry for rebellion and eliminating him would smother a lot of rebellions in the crib.

My steward proved disappointing, yet again.

Hoping to take advantage of the Basileus new found "kindness" I asked to be made Magistros of his court. Though I didn't receive a reply, I am sure it's simply lost in the mail. Surely.

The emperor had finally come of age, and a day of celebration throughout the empire was called.

The former count of Barion did not celebrate long.

Neither did the Baslieus it seemed.

I was shocked to receive such a letter from the emperor. Threatening me, right after asking for my forgiveness? Maybe he was not cruel or kind, simply mad? Still, I didn't want to seem disobedient on official documents. Granted, I didn't need to be as submissive as I was either.

The word of professional assassins spreading farther out started to worry me. The last thing I wanted my son to worry about was constant threat of assassination from his fellow douxs.

My new steward was already working out, and I prepared to make use of the money he scrounged up.

More troops is always better.

The war was over before it even began.

Not a thing happened to him. The emperor...spared him. Though there remained two more children left in his custody, he had so far been true to his word.

One night, Constance, Leon, and I sat around for dinner by ourselves. Leon began to tell me that there are rumors that the Basileus plans to march on the Muslims to reclaim Anatolia for the Christians. But he didn't tell me this with the intent of informing me, he told me this because he was excited. Because he wanted to see the Muslims crushed in battle. To my horror, I realized what had happened.

My son was a zealot. Our relationship would take a hit, and we could never truly bond as we did when he was younger. I didn't want him to be as cynical as I was, but to be a zealot?

The remaining prisoners had been released from the Baslieus' dungeons. Everyone had been spared outside of the count of Barion. As the Basileus remained true to his word, I would remain true to mine.

Though I was not able to recruit anyone to my cause, I did give up any plans for rebellion. I would give the Basileus my loyalty, for now.

In return for the cities giving high taxes, I had promised to reduce their levies. As promised, I put it up for a vote where it quickly passed.

In order to win over my vassals and hopefully allow for Leon to choose his own successor, I set in motion for the duchy to be an elected position instead of a hereditary position. Though Leon was furious, even after I selected him to be my successor.

And everyone voted for him to be the successor. Kids I swear...

Leon said he would only forgive me if I gave him land to rule over. Though he acted like a child, I thought this would actually be a good way to give him a field test for him to learn from.

So I agreed!

The Basileus was said to be coughing up blood, but even that didn't seem to stop him from expanding his power...

As the war Leon had told me about had finally come...

The call to arms throughout the empire. Almost every able bodied man answered.

Though the emperor had split his forces. We all warned him that disaster would occur if he did this, but he said he knew what he was doing...

Granted, he had enough troops to lose a few and still win easily.

Which was good, because he was going to lose a lot.

The Basileus personally led an army into Anatolia to break up the Muslim forces.

Then the Muslims did the same thing.

The Basileus came to be known as the "Young". Though he said he took it as a compliment, I'm sure it was meant as an insult.

The emperor had risen another army and planned to seek revenge for the fallen armies.

My cynicism got the best of me, and I accused my steward of stealing from me.

I was happy to find out that he had evidence of where the error came from. I was not only humbled but impressed! My steward himself had a smile on his face as I knew I made the good decision when I appointed him.

If only I could feel the same way about the Imperial army. Which has yet to learn the valuable lesson "Don't split up."

The Byzantine army set up defenses in the mountain, waiting for the army that outnumbered it by 2,000. The Basileus hoped that the mountains would aid them and lead to victory.

The battle raged for weeks, it was a brutal and bloody affair...

...For us.

With the 2nd Imperial army wiped out, the emperor hired a company of mercenaries to turn the tide. Apparently his education did not deal with numbers, for he hired about 7000 too few.

The results of incompetence.

Or insanity, since he seemed to keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Though the war was bloody and brutal. Word reached me that I had a grandson! I nearly cried as I read his name. "He was named after me" I told Constance through tears. As the child grew sickly and struggled to breath, I found myself praying for his life. Even at the worst of Leon's illness, I had never prayed. But for little Valerios? I would do anything.

The "King" of Greece sent me a message which may have been used as kindling.

Men were simply sent into the fray to die at the feet of the Muslims.

The result had long been foretold, but it was still shocking to hear. This was a war that we should have won easily, but instead we lost handily. Though I felt for the child, his failures cost 20k Byzantines their lives.

And had gotten the treasury into severe debt.

As the empire circled the drain, the vultures swooped in on their prey.

As rebellions would soon become frequent...

So as you can see, the Basileus was true to his word! Unfortunately, that word is about to get the empire put out to pasture. Because of that, I want to put our loyalty up for a vote. Should we:

A) Stay loyal to the Basileus no matter what!

B) Look for an opportunity to rebel/put a friend or family in power

C) Declare Independence

For reference, the Basileus is in the middle of a war, a rebellion, and has 400 troops. However, we can't start a faction because of the promise we made, and we can't become emperor since we've been castrated. If there's a tie, I'm going with A because Valerios, for all his faults, wants to stay loyal to the kid. So vote everyone!
