This doesn't especially surprise me. People are so eager now to show their progressiveness that anything said against Obama is taken as a blasphemy. I voted for the guy, but we should still criticize him, as we should any figure in government. America doesn't need more bleating lambs following a shepard off a cliff (NOT a bible reference, just a metaphor). Granted, this was the wrong place for the kid to get ballzy, and yeah, if he truly within his heart is racist, then his comment should be taken as ignorant rather than offensive. It's a tough call for the administrators to make.

If someone calls someone ignorant because of ones opinion, WITH OUT debating. It just proves the caller ignorant. (IN FACT you might be ignorant because you don't recognize that all races are different and have there own qualities (Like Caucasoid have have larger nostrils and fat centered above the belt,(OK I admit, that sentence better describes the Irish and dutch than other European races) while the Negroid has darker skin and a higher immunity to skin cancer, (Which is countered by the fact that they live in places more vulnerable to the sun, and balances it out)stronger legs to out run predators (Which is countered by the cats being yet faster.) and the fat is centered below the belly to keep cool)

If someone is making judgments based solely on skin color or ethnicity, then that is destructive racism, as opposed to just racism. I realize that there are differences between the races due to evolution, and I think it's a good thing. But from what we got of this story, and the context, I'd probably assume this kid didn't have anthropological logic backing his statement.
