How embarassing. Nice to know how in-touch schools, parents, & news anchors are with kids & what they're watching. The fact that some staff member at school, the news, or a cop didn't immidiately realize that this was an inside joke from a TV show more popular than it deserves to be is 7 different kinds of fail.

I think the cops and teachers realized it (if they thought it was the next columbine would they only give him 3 days out of school)
the media and that one parent did not

I find it hilarious that anyone could take this kid serious. The minute that they read that he put Justing Bieber's name on his "Death Note" they should have all laughed and talked to the kid. Do any of the people think this could would actually kill Justin? (As mush as I hate to say it) No, he wouldn't. So why think he would actually kill any of the other kids on this list? Does the kid have issues? Probably. Should he get help? yes. SHould he be suspended? NO!There was NO WAY this kid was ever seriously thinking of killing all those kids. So just send the kid to the cousellor, roudn up all the kids on that list...and BEAT THEM. No kidding, don;t do that. Suspend them for bullying. Oh, and find Justin Bieber and arrest him for harrassment of this poor kid :p.

PS Did anyone else find it funny that they said "8 boys AND Justin Bieber"?

I had the exact same senario at my school, and I was on the kid's list. ranked #8 (out of 12) on the "Dead list". quite honestly, I was a little confused he put me on the list. Sure I stole his girlfriend the year before, but, he came out of the closet soon after that... It was the only way I knew him too, I would think it's a pretty weak reason to want me dead.

I like how much they blow it out of proportion: "A POSSIBLE HIT LIST!"

I think a secret Death Note would be a good release of frustration for someone that age, but I can see how it would scare some people.
I can agree with this, and i know my mum would have freaked out if they'd found something like this in my school or college, however, yes it had "Death Note" written on, but as you've just said, this is most likely just an upset kid venting his anger, believe me, i've done this before also in the days when I prayed it existed and would work. I doubt the kid would have harmed anyone, he most likely just wished that this story was real and that it could happen. Having said that, note that he didn't follow the procedure of "Death Note" in the first place, all that was on the list was names and random dates. Chances of him fully understanding what he was doing, or how it might effect others who might see it, are slim.

The kid needs help, not to be kicked out of school or arrested as this "concerned" mother wants.

I guessed Deathnote to be some kind of heavy metal band.

But seriously, how can you suspend someone for wanting Justin Bieber dead? Ninety percent of the population would never make it through kindergarten.

I really have nothing to say to this situation other than that mother they interviewed seems completely self-serving to me. Yes, I understand she wants to protect her child by removing a "possible threat," but seriously... expel a kid who she admitted herself is in a hostile environment and suffering from bullying?

I think we just found a perfect candidate for the "Ignorant Adult" award.

Kids get expelled for writing up death notes all the time. I'd expect approximately 100% of them get back in after appealing that death note isn't real, but it isn't really news.

Having a death note would suggest he was getting bullied and didnt have anyone to turn to. Now because the school panics, he has the police bullying him....lol =(

I find it even funnier that they confirm the kid is being picked on, but rather than help the kid not be picked on, they'd rather just suspend him due to nonsense like this. Way to help the kid! Way to go creating a positive self esteem in him (something that it's obvious the kid lacks). You're pushing the kid to more likely shoot people because he's going to be frustrated and give up on the system because of shit like this.

If you want to see one possible reason behind why school shootings occur, this may be it.
This. If stuff like this happens, it's the schools job to ensure it never happens again in the future.

Instead, they're taking the "dur dur put tape over hole in dam" option and making themselves look like completely unprofessional assholes.
Just because the school didn't comment doesn't mean they aren't doing anything
it just means they don't need the media in the kids life
They suspended him, didn't they?

I understand why they care about it, but it seems like it would be a good way to let some anger out. Suspending the kid is not really a good thing to do, instead they should have a sit down with him and explain to him why what he did is wrong.
In an ideal world that would be the best thing to do, sadly, most forms of punishment and correction in schools seems to be less aimed towards reforming people and helping them learn from their mistakes and more towards making examples of people as a possible deterrant for other troublemakers.

Sitting a kid in detention for an hour doesn't really tell them that what they did was wrong, it just demeans them and makes them frustrated and likely to do it again. I got a lot of detentions back in school (usually for being late and missing homework) and afterwards I was thinking more along the lines of 'the teachers are pricks' than 'maybe this could have been avoided/I only have myself to blame'.
