Hi, i'm 15, and i'm begining to see a pattern developing here. I hear alot in the media about how i'm either a danger to society or an obsessive-compulsive psychopath. Neither of which i can see being true and indeed doesn't apply to most people i've met. (Yes there are people like that but i hardly see how age comes into it). I've been told i'm too childish to take anything seriously, and too young to play a game in which something morally reprehensible is happening without getting dramaticlly influenced by it, which is a remarkable contradiction in terms.

My complaint is this, i'm mature enough to take the arguement itself seriously, and smart enough to work out that game logic hardly applies to the real world, i've in fact never seen anyone who has, apart from isolated cases brought up the news, from kids who were clearly unstable before and who were given a game that they really probably shouldn't have by their parents. So why is it the media is allowed to get away with such irresponsible generalisation without being caught out by someone about it? Why has it gotten far enough to actually become an issue?

Adults do plenty of stupid things, and they have the advantage of 'with age comes wisdom'.

At least kids have an excuse for being idiots.

Because games are still seen as things children play with. Despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, non-gamers regard videogames as a childish distraction, nothing more. Those in the know will tell you that games, in terms of being a medium of entertainment, are on par with books and films, but a lot of people fail to recognise this.

That's why there's an outrage every time a game like Manhunt/Mass Effect/GTA/whatever comes along - the conservative media reads what is possible in such titles, and imagines a 12 year old playing it.

Because adults don't want to believe that kids are mature enough to distinguish real from fantasy when it comes to videogames.

Because the older you get, the bigger your ego grows and the less you accept change.

People have been raised to view whatever they've been told first as truth without questioning it, and when a new theory comes along they are too adjusted to the old one to change.

Why I hate parents and adults in general, they think kids are stupid with all their "new finagled things", but they are just as stupid as us. Growing up doesn't mean much, if you ask me.

I've realised an odd fact with games which is this:

1.) Many newspapers and stations will report on how games 'de-sensatise' children to violence.

2.) I had previously wanted to join the military and knew violence didn't bother me.

However, after re-playing COD 2 a few weeks back, i was suddenly forced to stop playing and turn off my console as i realised the true horrors of war. Since then the only violence i have watched has been 'The Pacific'.

So Eat that Media! Games have educated me and made me realise more about myself!

SO FUCK YOU CNN!

I think that adults have the advantage of having more experience than kids, but because of that they tend to disregard the opinions of kids because they get an attitude of superiority. They also refuse to change because they are used to the way things were before.

The media can get away with whatever it wants to. That's how it works.

Also, the more intelligent youth aren't noticed, and the ones that aren't smart get noticed. The ones that get noticed shape the public's opinion on them. This opinion is usually negative, due to the actions of those of lower intelligence.

Keep it up, this is going to result in a suspension or ban.

OT: it's probably because there are few kids your age that are acctually mature. But then alot of adults are just as bad and do stupid stuff as said above by Daystar Clarion at least kids have an excuse to be stupid.

A nonsensical amount of children (and adults, for that matter) are immature. Adults, being that they run society, determine that however they think is best for the children, as a human's brain does not entirely develop for rational thought until around ages 22-24. Society has deemed that 18+ constitutes 'adult,' thus minors get the short end of the stick. It sucks, but I suppose one just has to deal with it, as few people accept those few non-idiotic minors as actual people.

I have also faced discrimination because of my age. Being that I have a late birthday (4th November), many of my schoolmates are older than I, therefore I'm one of the last of my friends to get a driver's licence, purchase M-rated video games or whatever other age-related limitations society imposes. As one of the youngest of my group of peers, a few of my classmates used to poke fun at me, and that's why my elementary and middle school experiences were not all too fun.

Some people refer to me as one of the most intelligent and mature kids, despite my age, and unfortunately, they are right. Being a minority is never fun, especially when intellectuality is the minority.

Being bored with secondary education, as every assignment is menial, I elected to skip a year of high school by doubling up classes, completing required courses for junior and senior years by compiling them into my junior year. Graduation is in sight, as is an actual education, and my plan fails. After a few months of deliberation, the university I planned on attending decided not to allow me to dorm, as I will not be 18 within my first two semesters. The only way for me to get to classes will be 2 hours of switching trains or an hour car ride (after I'm allowed a full licence--until then, my parents would have to drive me).

Long story short: age discrimination sucks, but the majority (more idiotic, immature persons) completely decimates any chance of leeway for the minority's rights.

edit: I'm 16, turning 17 this November, in case anyone wondered.

It's because idiots are the vocal majority. Vidja games are foreign materials, ones that are still, despite the successes of the Wii and games like Rock Band, stuck in the mantra of "for sad, lonely dorks.". Take the majority of people I know, who think that Call of Duty is the best representative for the entire medium. Or my dad, who thinks that all games are "Shoot 'em ups" no matter how many times I correct him.

They're seen as toys and, just like when someone releases a violent toy or something, a violent videogame is seen as harmful to children as, according to those in charge, children under 15 are the main demographic for all videogames.

You can get suspended for just being a smartass? I've said way worse stuff than this on other forums and I Haven't even gotten a slap on the wrist yet.

I'm 24. When YOU (or whoever in your age bracket) do something retarded that can even vaguely be attached to gaming WE (the people in my age bracket) have to put up with months of people telling mouthing off on tv about how we are raping your minds with our purile filth.

More on topic and slightly more constructive; You're in the same boat all the rest of us were kid. If you were raised right the what you see on a screen will never influence what you do in the real world. The big, fat catch 22 is we don't need to trust you since trusting your group to be mature enough to use some good sense is just plain dumb. If I knew you personally I might even be one of the people who wouldn't think twice about using my adult status to get you in on the grown up side early but I'd be just as likely to do everything in my power to make sure you don't get near that shit till I think you are ready. If all of you have to go without to make my life simpler and the media less retarded then you are shit out of luck.
