There are likeable parts and I had enough fun to get through both of them, and I love Disney so getting to go explore the other worlds was fun. I guess I just expected to like it more.

So why is this game so popular?
What is it that I'm missing? (Or not missing?)
Do you like the series?
Well, I liked the first two games because I enjoyed how seamlessly the FF spells merged with the more active gameplay. I said to myself, why can't FF12 be this fun?

Also, I liked the weird alternative look at the Final Fantasy world. Seeing a world where Aeris and Cloud could be together made me "Awww!" , and I liked how the other FF characters were wrapped in. It was neat. At times, I was like "Wow, I wish I could stick around here and do less with that Disney stuff," but all in all it really didn't harm my enjoyment.

Oh, and while the plot of game 1 put me to sleep (except when the cast of FF showed up), the second one was really interesting. I liked the Nobodies and Namine... less so Organization 13 (not sure why they're so popular, but whatever). Plus, Sora got to grow up some.

And then I played the PS2 port of Chain of Memories. Or I should say, I played half of it. I haven't been back to the series since. Ugh. If they release a Kingdom Hearts 3, I'll play it, but I'm so sick of these side-games that use different mechanics. I'm not here to play cards - I'm here to play Final Fantasy on meth. ^^

x_x I just can't stand goofy as a character so that didn't help. I guess it's hard to make sense of a complex plot when there are shallow disney characters running around after you the whole time. It's mind boggling.
Well to be honest Goofy is waay more fleshed out than Donald back story wise. That's what the Goofy Movies were for.

Back on topic, for me the main appeal was just playing through the Disney worlds. The fighting system was pretty fun and I could actually stand the Final Fantasy characters (a huge surprise since I don't like Final Fantasy). Everything was smooth enough. The story was flimsy but it worked. The boss battles were also decent. I loved fighting big ass cerberus and the heartless-ansem-ship thingy. Plus with so many secret weapons and spells the side quests had me going for hours and they never felt like a chore.

To me the worse part of both games were the cutscenes involving only the main characters (cringe inducing every time), that horrible sing along bullshit in Atlantica, the gummy ship mess, and finally the fact they made the story way more complicated than it ever needed to be.

I haven't played it. From its description I assume I won't like it. There are other games higher on my priority list.

I say it's the character development of Organization XIII and the love triangle between Sora, Riku, and Kairi.

They aren't great, but they're hardly terrible. I enjoyed them, but not to the point that I am going to recommend it to everybody or become some mad shipper or something.

I figure the reason for its success is all the pretty girlboys talking about how close they all are. There is a huge focus on friendship.
However, when you are a yaoi fangirl, EVERYTHING is gay. Kingdom Hearts was just so easy to make gay that it drew in a massive crowd.

Basically, I am pretty sure it is mostly successful because OMFG CUTE GAY BOYS SQUEE.

You get to see a bunch of disney characters together and fight along side them. It is/was more or less, a fad. Some people get it, others don't. I liked it fairly well but your not going to get a definite answer to why everyone loved it.

I didn't quite get it either, I thought it was a novel concept, and it was excecuted well enough, but it didn't really seem like a world beater to me.

Though considering what Square usually puts out, I guess Kingdom Hearts was certainly a breath of fresh air... before the air began to stagnate with all of the prequels and spin-offs and the like, bogging the series down with all of the Final Fantasy-ness that the first batch of games were content to include, but not overdo.

I'm a huge fan of the games because of the story, characters, music and the gameplay. If it's not your thing than oh well.

The irony of this is I like yaoi. And I like pretty boys.

But maybe I'm more of a gamer than I thought -- and maybe that isn't enough to make a game enjoyable for me.

I got to say I am mildly interested in trying the new KH game because Donald and Goofy aren't tag teaming you the whole time so I get the feeling it'll be a more enjoyable experience.

I think it's called an opinion. Apparently people have different ones. It's all a bit confusing.
It's especially confusing since when you say you don't like KH, people look at you like you just supported genocide or something.

Still, opinions are founded. Saying "It's opinion" is pointless. Of course it is. There's still something that draws people. Aesthetics, gameplay, story, etc.

Are you saying FF7: Dirge of Cerberus isn't an amazing game!? o Ao I am shocked.

No. I'm kidding. xD

Won't even go there.

I kinda understand what you mean, to be honest when I think about the kingdom hearts story it makes very little sense, (especially how leon says that the keyblade is the only thing to kill heartless....and then kills one 2 seconds later) and it seems rather silly, but once I play it, I just get so into the combat that it doesn't matter that it's rather silly. maybe you're unable to ignore the silliness (not in a mean way) or maybe it's just not your type of game.

You won't "understand" the entire point until you play all of them (Excluding maybe chain of memories- I only watched the cut scenes [because, in Australia, only games like Blops are guaranteed to even get shipped over], and the entire story is more or less presented to you within 358/2 days and KH2.
Part of the appeal is the unknown- if you don't like that sense, you won't like the story.

I completely agree about Donald and Goofy, though- luckily, they removed them almost entirely from Birth by Sleep and Days.

My answer: I'm a complete sucker for Disney stuff. So multi-mega-super-crossover between all of them? HELL YES I was buying that.

The plot points are sort of inconsistent in between games and Nomura's interviews about the games, to the point where, like Hitchhiker's Guide, we don't have canon anymore, we have suggestions.

But I thought it was fun and enjoyed the battle system, and the general idea of the plot is interesting, anyway. So I like it. I know not everybody will and can understand why they wouldn't. XD
