Knee-jerk responses you're sick of hearing

I like to think of myself as a bit of an Escapist veteran. I'm coming up to my third year posting on the site next month. I enjoy my time here, but one thing irks me about a good bulk of the members on the site: they seemingly copy the majority.

Chief amongst these repeated arguments is the one that crops up as the instant response to any discussion on difference in opinion. Someone may say for instance "I disagree with with your choice of favourite biscuit! [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.336909-Biscuits?page=1]", possibly hoping to get a little back and forth going between the person they quoted. Possibly they want to whip up some discussion, get some talk going about the whys and hows and whats of the situation at hand. However, almost instantly, there's that one guy who says the same thing every time: "God forbid anyone has a DIFFERENT opinion!" I can't help but wonder if they believe in what they're saying, or simply saying it because the majority of folks on the site jump to the same response every time someone disagrees with an opinion.

So I ask this: on the Escapist, or otherwise, what knee-jerk response in an argument are you sick or hearing?

I disagree here. Sometimes, it's not a clear yes or no question, and not taking a side there isn't "indifferent", it's "understanding it's not quite that simple". I would actually go as far as to be seriously annoyed when people insist that

a) everyone needs to take a side
b) if you point out a flaw in my reasoning that means you're siding with my enemy

As soon as somebody on some random forum has claimed to be banned from a game or something similar, people are forming a queue proclaiming they've cancelled their orders for that game/stop playing it/boycott it etc.

Annoying as hell.

Its not taking a third option, its when the topic is something like "Do you prefer Modern Warfare or Battlefield" and people say "Lulz Brown Shooters I like Indie Games". That is nice and all, but how is that at all relevant to the conversation?

Likewise, when people post just to say "I don't care either way" or "I have no opinion". Then why did you bother posting?

Sometimes opinions are just opinions, and back and forth doesn't help. This is especially true if something isn't a reasoned decision. If, for example, you did disagree with my choice of biscuit, I couldn't possibly discuss it because I didn't consciously choose to prefer one biscuit over another. Perhaps I grew up with a particular biscuit and that's why I like it better, but I don't know and by disagreeing with me you're just being contrary, since taste in biscuit is something one would expect should differ between individuals. Incidentally, this lack of logical reasoning is also why you can't argue with religious people.

Learn to accept that there are more generations, or better yet, actually look at the pokemon rather than pick out one bad one and say they are all like it!

I could really do without another thread in which a homeowner/police officer shoots some dumbass and the thread goes on for 15 pages about how many times they shot him and was it excessive.

Every time one of these stories creeps onto the web, the escapist community never misses a single one.

Any time someone mentions used games and someone brings up the completely false comparison of used cars. That drives me crazy. I mean, the comparison isn't really any more valid if you compare used games to used movies or music or books but at least you'd be comparing entertainment media as opposed to two things that have absolutely nothing in common except the word used.

I've noticed this in other threads, but you really have a grudge against mens rights, huh? Do you mind if I ask why? I mean I can understand not liking extremist, but I don't think everybody who supports mens right are extremist.

I've noticed this in other threads, but you really have a grudge against mens rights, huh? Do you mind if I ask why? I mean I can understand not liking extremist, but I don't think everybody who supports mens right are extremist.

I may come across that way, but I dont have a grudge against mens right....its clear that there are mens issues that need adressing

what I DO have a grudge against are men who act EXACTALLY like the "evil feminiests" they seem to go on about all the time...

they lurk all around opinion blogs..and as a female who's interests are hardly feminine I cant help but get a bit defensive when someone on a blog says somthing along the lines of

"women...they reject all guys untill they hit 30..THEN they want mr right to settle down with, but TOO BAD ladies we are all dating the younger ones.. they only care about your money, they just want to suck you dry, they just want to controll you," <- hey ,fuck you

and no I dont think extreme feminists deserve a free pass, they are almost worst...confusing the message of feminism, giving amuntion to those MRM twats and turning it into one big clusterfuck...

which makes me wish people didnt get so hung up on gender at times
