So while playing a match of CoD4 I was wondering how the hell do game devs now explain pulling out a knife and stabbing in all one motion that takes less than .5 seconds while in the middle of shooting?

It seems that this has been the trend in recent FPS games where knifing is insanely fast and totally unrealistic. What happened to games like Counter Strike where you at least had to hit 1 to take the knife out before using it? It seems that if you have to hit 1,2,3 etc to change guns you should have to with a knife as well.
Because they were useless. 99% It was faster to reload than to switch weapon and try to knife someone.

Having the knife as a "quick hit" means there's an actual point to having a knife.

Nowadays military operatives have their combat knife in a chest sheathe that means they can pull it out and stab with it in one motion, to increase speed. It takes a second or two to put back in, but added speed in taking it out and taking down a threat is far more valuable.
Don't base it in real life. Any soldier will tell you knives are tools, not weapons. You'll need a serious lounge to pierce Kevlar armors, and even then you're better off bludgeoning the soldier with the butt of your weapon or with your own fists.

I cant see your complaint.

If your saying its unrealistic and therefore bad then I would dispute that.

Ever wondered why no good FPS featured weapon jamming?
Ever wondered why no FPS( until around CoD2 time) featured breathing?
Ever wondered why no good FPS features a mechanic by which your boot laces came undone*?

Realism does not always equal fun.Possibly immersion not always fun though.

*To tie a your shoelaces you would have to select a complex series of QTEs to complete(Various knots to tie). Your capability of doing that would alter the time they next came undone.More complex knots would take longer but last longer as well.

There could also be customizable footwear varying from the hard to lace durable boots to the lace-free trainers/sneakers!
Far Cry 2 had weapon jamming. And it was a good, albeit repetitive, FPS.

At least knifing in Bad Company 2 is slightly more realistic. It is slower than MW as it involves taking out the knife and stabbing in 2 motions.

Only slightly more realistic

I believe it is only that way to make melee attacks practical for the average player. This may make it unrealistic in some game situations but a slower and more realistic animation wouldn't be used by players in games like those mentioned.

Same way they explain that you can survive getting shot in the head by just crouching behind a wall for five seconds. It's a game.

Out of all the unrealistic things in FPS in general you focus on this?

Really?

The knife being a one hit kill in most cases would seem more unrealistic to me then anything else.

Think about it a knife kills in one hit but you have to unload a clip off that 5+ mm caliber SMG to drop someone...

None of it is realistic and it seems pretty foolish to demand one specific aspect of the game be realistic.
