Check out this freeware title called Tag: The Power of Paint. It's by some guys who were later hired by Valve for Portal 2 and you can really see where they got the idea for the goo from in the Portal 2 trailers.

Other than that, just try checking some of the games here [http://vsrecommendedgames.wikia.com/wiki/Freeware_Games]

If you ever get tired of Steam, and are looking for a good browser-based game, then you can't go wrong with the free MMO that is Runescape. I've actually left World of Warcraft after three years to go back to the MMORPG that started my interest in the genre.

Sure, you have to pay $5 a month for some of the later features and a good portion of the Member map, but if you are looking for a free game to pass the time, Runescape is a good choice.
I hear over the grapevine that they vamped the subscription fee, apparently the nuts at Jagex are a bit too greedy for their own good.

But yes, RS is okay - good way to burn countless hours without spending a buck or downloading a single MB. While the free players are in deperate need of new quests and the censorship is horrid, I still liked it for the year or so I played it.

ZPS (officially Zombie Panic! Source) is a very good mod, but it's kind of free. The mod itself is free and all, but you need a game with the current Source Engine, such as Half-Life 2.

But as for Source mods, here are the ones I love:

Multiplayer:

Zombie Master (Easily have sunk over 400 hours into this game)*
Firearms Source
Insurgency*
Garry's Mod (GMod 9 is free, GMod 10/11 is $10 on Steam)*
World War I Source
Dystopia*

Singleplayer:

SMOD series (Redux, Tactical, Outbreak) (Now most are implayable because of the May 26th update, but there's a MODDB download for a working SMOD)
Portal Prelude* (Portal, obviously, required)

*means a fucking brilliant mod

here are some more ideas:
LF2 (Little fighter 2): A fighting sort of game. used to be pretty popular back in the 2000's and for a good reason. great game if you ask me.

Liero: An old DOS game (fully compatible for XP, and beyond, i think) this is basically Worms Armageddon only in real-time. Watch some videos on youtube to get an idea. I like it, a pretty good game.

Frets on Fire: A guitar hero game where you use you're keyboard instead of a guitar controller. you hold the keyboard like a guitar and use F1-F5 for the keys. The best thing about it is that it's music library is virtually unlimited, so long as you download them. Plus there are some mods that add to the feel of the game. I have a rock band mod, that turns the menu similar to a Rock Band game. Look it up on youtube, it's pretty cool =)

Hope that helps ;)

Own N64 games but can't be arsed to play them with Nintendos shitty controller, download Project 64 and some ROMS(currently playing through Ocarina of Time, so much better on a mapped 360 controller)

If you're a pirate, everything. Yarr!

OT: LoTRO, I'm currently waiting for that to go F2P in Europe. Gunbound is also good, it's like Worms but online only, and you use the money earned in games to buy gear for your character which give you stat bonuses. The levelling system is nice because it's made so that you can't join a new players game and demolish them. The only problem is, like most F2P games, there's a cash shop so at the later levels you'll get shafted by players who spend real money to get their gear. There was a good TPS I once played too called Gunz, it was fun to play but, again, it had a cash shop.
