Konami had it's golden age in the 80s/90s and maybe early 00s(SH2) but long before it 'officially' withdrew from AAA game development it hadn't produced anything worthwhile anymore other than Metal Gear. Konami just have long moved on to more profitable venues. But yeah Konami might still be interested in licensing deals b/c it's free money for them. If they wait any longer IPs like Metal Gear and Silent Hill will only still exist in the minds of middle aged gamers.

One reason I still believe is that they were incapable of competing in the AAA space either way.

This is especially felt in the 360/PS3 era to me. MGS 4 was like so much effort put into it despite the flaws of the story and gameplay, it was still cut above games like Silent Hill Downpour and Homecoming. And Castlevania Lords of Shadows 1 and 2 and that Judgement fighting game. This isn't enough to compete with the likes of EA/Ubisoft/Activision and even the other Japanese Devs.

Like take note, the best games to come out of Konami post PS2 era was MGS 4 and the DS Castlevania games.

You're going past delusional and heading straight in to delirious, if you think news will crop that soon.
When was the last time you heard the words "Very Soon" for something and how long did it took to get announced afterward?

To be frank, does Metal Gear even need a continuation at this point?

I get Silent Hill (I think) - I'm assuming that's a setting where every game can exist in isolation, where the titular town can throw up all sorts of scenarios and whatnot, but Metal Gear? Where can the story go post-MGS4 (or Rising, I guess)? Every plot point's been wrapped up, and there aren't any gaps in the timeline to cover. Even Rising by itself kind of undermined MGS4 as far as I can tell (the world's back to being terrible), so, um, yay?

Contra 4 is still awesome too. Thougj Way Forward actually developed that one. Konami decided the outsource. I honestly never cared for a lot of the metroidvania games. I prefer the classic linear, stage based, Castlevania games.

@stroopwafel, Konami was actually doing fine with their Xbox live arcade, psn, and at the time, Wiiware stuff. They've actually could have made it in the triple A space, but they obviously didn't care. I know we had the recession and everything, but part of it was just that they couldn't commit or only trying to kept using iconic/rip off creatures in silent hill, because I felt that's all they needed to make it sell. Say what you will about the Lords of Shadows games, but at least there is effort and dedication put behind them despite their flaws. I would say both of those games any day over the HD Silent Hill games from the 360 and PS3 era. Shattered Memories was okay, but it's a glorified walking simulator when you stop and think about it. One of the first of its kind.

I'm sure they can squeeze another 20 or so games out of Big Boss doing shit between 1984 and 1995. Or more likely, a string of dudes thinking they were big boss but were actually unaware dopplegangers.Or Big Boss didn't really spend 9 years in a coma, he was out doing fun shit between 1975 and 1984 while venom was in the hospital and he just came back to give him a tutorial.

I'm not saying it would be good, mind you. I'm just saying Konami could come up with a bunch of really stupid ideas, like some godforsaken zombie thing on a planet full of dust. Thank God that never happened.

I fail to see why I should care. Is it just because all of you are in love with titles they own the rights to? I mean do any of you honestly feel like Konami is going to be a GOOD company? Or do you think they are going to keep doing the same shit they always do, and just try and act like complete corporate assholes, and milk your beloved IP's for every penny they can wring out of your little gamer hands?

I mean seriously, is this all just because of Hideo and Silent Hill? Because it seems like that's what this is about.

You sound like you've described the Spider Man clone saga....which is apparently considered one of the biggest piles of comic book shit to ever be shat out by a shitter. I mean you even named a character named Venom. I'm guessing there is a Venom in MGS too? So...yeah that sounds like a very promising place for Konami to take the franchise.

I'm with you all the way there, buddy.

I can't believe I am saying this, but some of the other responses on this thread made Gaming Brit right. See his Silent Hills video for detail. He was being a no-nothing-know-it-all, insufferable genius, butt-fuck, yet he's ends up being right 3 years later. I would show you the video, but he got so much rightful backlash for it, the video was set to private. Though serves him right in that regard.

. I mean you even named a character named Venom. I'm guessing there is a Venom in MGS too? So...yeah that sounds like a very promising place for Konami to take the franchise.
Punished-Venom-Something-Snake! It varies on how you play the fake Big Boss with implanted memories. Yes, it's really stupid and is used to explain how the (fake) Big Boss died in MG1, yet the real big boss survied in MG2, and later near the end of MGS4. Only to die for real at the end this time.

Someone has to take the mantle that Splinter cell left behind. I mean we have Hitman but I want my technothriller stealth game.

And I will bet 20 dollars they make the next Castlevania a Soulsbourne because it's the easiest way to do it

Metal Gear came out first, and before that it was Castle Wolfenstein. So really, both took the mantle Wolfenstein left behind. I get the point you are trying to make.

Ironic because Demon Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne are considered the best modern 3D Castlevania games ever made. Either that or Berserk. Usually both. Considering how many references there are to the no longer running manga, it makes sense.

That still isn't a case from a plot standpoint.

That...doesn't sound too bad, actually.

Granted, I've never played a Soulslike (Soulsborne?), and I've only ever played one Castlevania game (Bloodlines), so meh.

You would basically get a Metroidvania, Souls style, but with Castlevania aesthetics.

Well, Castle Cainhurst in Bloodborne feels like they were trying to shout out to castlevania as much as they could without incurring a lawsuit, if that means anything.
Oh yeah, I already knew about that. Exactly why I put Bloodborne on the list. Even without Cainhurst, there were some obvious other Castlevania type aesthetics. The whole whip cane thing. That is basically the the game's version Vampire Killer.

Sorry, my eyes skipped over that. And yeah, totally agree on the whip cane.

Really, Bloodborne might be the closest we ever get to a proper Big Budget Castlevania game for a long time. That and Bloodstained, of course(though I'm not sure if that's considered Big Budget or not).

There's too much qanon-esque baking involved in this to bring me anywhere close to taking it seriously. Also I feel mildly sorry for the dev of the indie game who will most likely be getting a lot of unnecessary online flak from strangers when it more than likely turns out to be unrelated on release. If I'm wrong, that'd be nice as we'd all have something to look forward to. But humans have proven themselves too eager to believe anything that either confirms what they already feared, and/or what they already hoped.

Bloodstained, of course(though I'm not sure if that's considered Big Budget or not).
The 2.5d Bloodstained is mid budget and AA. The two 8-bit games that came out are indie. They're basically more expensive versions of Castlevania III. Now if they do a Bloodlines 16-bit version of that, I'll definitely buy it.

Sidenote: what would you recommend to a Metal Gear fan who cannot fulfill their fix due to Konami's lack of new titles?

I haven't played the series, but my understanding is that if you boil them down to the core elements they are stealth games with cinematic aspirations, dealing with modern day politics. I don't know if there are any other game that fits that description.

  • Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
  • MGS1 Original
  • MGS2
  • MGS3
  • MGS4 - Be warned, cut-scenes and over explaining every plot line in the series does get tiring and nerve wracking.
  • Metal Gear Rising -My favorite!
