So how much will the likes of EA/Activision/Square/MS/Sony be willing to fork over for the likes of Metal Gear and Silent Hill? Would love to see Visceral take a crack at Silent Hill, hell would like to see what Naughtu Dog would do with Metal Gear.

I don't think that's ever going to happen. I've heard multiple people state that on top of the CEO being a power hungry idiot, Konami also makes a butt ton of cash on Japanese gambling machinces. (If I'm wrong please correct me.) to the point where they just don't give a fuck about their videogaming routes.

I don't think any of the above companies you listed will buy out Metal Gear or Silent Hill (and if I'm not mistaken the American companies wouldn't be able to even if they wanted to due to Japanese laws.) but I wouldn't be surprised if they just willy nilly let anyone and their dog have license rights for one game and quality goes to the trashcan.

There is some scuttlebutt about Konami is thinking of going into the mobile gaming business, I don't know how true that is though. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, but I guess we'll wait and see about that.

In terms of other companies doing their properties, I doubt that will happen. They're not gonna let them go, and even if they did, American companies can't buy them. If memory serves since it's because those properties are under Japanese copyright law and not American copyright law, and Japanese law has a clause about that. It's a little fuzzy, but I think that the deal is in terms of that.

In any event, I think Silent Hill just needs to die off and Metal Gear to just end since it's so convoluted. Although, I doubt Konami will let Metal Gear just lie since it's their money maker. >.>

I'd like to see Square Enix get a hold of Konami. Wouldn't trust any Western publisher with it, and Square Enix let studios create with freedom (see Deus Ex) and their DLC practises don't seem bad.

A MGS game ripped apart for a bunch of DLCs by EActivision would be horrible.

Yeah, to the surprise of absolutely no one. Sega, Konami, Capcom being a shadow of its former self and Squeenix' Japanese in-house studio having produced nothing worthwhile in like what..a decade? If not for Bamco and SCEJ and some independent game designers going out of their way to make a game; the Japanese games industry is disappearing like snow in the sun.

Unfortunately in the west I don't think the situation is all that better. Espescially not for 'AAA' games with fewer and fewer releases(let alone actually good ones). It really fuels the supposition that games have become too expensive to make with too long development cycles and with corporate managers having way overblown sales expectations. Espescially when cheap shovelware for smartphones can be churned out at a constant rate with a fraction of the cost.

Because hey, like that executive prick from Konami says, it is 'the future' after all. Way to shit on your legacy. Oh and Konami will never, ever, sell their IPs. It's brand recognition they can use in all of their garbage products.

Goodbye Suikoden series. I'll miss you. Still so many unanswered questions, still so much potential for good stories, all gone.

While silent hills is missed potential, I'm happy where the silent hill series developed into. With shattered memories and downpour being excellent games with magnificent stories and wonderful atmosphere. Underrated classics in my view, with those two and 2 composing my top 3 psychological thriller/horror stories and games ever. So, bye konami, hopefully the door hits you in the way out and you fall down the concrete stairs.

They could always go the Fox route and just sit on IPs they have no intention of ever using for "reasons". Why sell their Silent Hill license when they can make a Silent Hill themed pinball machine for instance.
Or rather, why make a Silent Hill pinball machine when they can make three or four Silent Hill Pachinko machines and, four or five Metal Gear mobile games. I would also prepare for news about some kind of Yugioh TCG app coming soon to smartphones as well. It's unfortunate but Konami has never been a game maker I've had a lot of love for anyway. Nothing they really did in the past effected me except for when they stopped localizing Mystic Ninja games.

If Nintendo buys them, getting Silent Hill and MGS on their systems could actually give them an edge they need.

I personally would rather Sony or Square get them, since I want Jrpgs. Though just about ANYONE, even Sega, are gonna be better owners to these franchises than Konami has been for the past many years.

I think this is the first time I've seen someone say "What if Nintendo buys them" and I thought "nah, I don't want that."

Seconded.
Though after the mockery that was Suikoden Tierkreis, I wasn't sure if Konami actually gave much of a fuck anymore.

I hope they sell off their IP, I'd hate to have to wait another 15 years for a Rocket Knight/Sparkster sequel (or even longer for one that didn't cost 15 bucks American and yet take less than two hours to beat).

It wouldn't surprise me if they did stop making big budget games. After seeing some videos and reading the articles about the P.T. and Kojima messes, I'm convinced many of the higher ups at Konami are prioritizing their other industries (pachinko, fitness clubs, etc.) over their video game division.

Rumors say Konami's CEO is adverse to games and has had a major falling out with Hideo Kojima, leading to his name being removed from many things and his public silence in the past month. They want to backpedal on the canceled Silent Hill game. Removing the Playable Teaser from the Playstation store, going as far as to delete it from the servers, so even those who previously downloaded it cannot re-download it. Youtuber Super Bunnyhop had a bogus copyright strike placed on his critical video of the recent activity surrounding Konami, only for Youtube itself to reinstate the video a few hours later. (A rare "yay" for Youtube.) Something fishy is going on at Konami right now.

Their "digital entertainment" (read: video games) division is profitable, but it's also a massive money sink, compared to less volatile ventures. Konami is another Japanese publisher that thinks mobile games are the future. Konami reps are also lobbying the Japanese government to lift the gambling ban in their home country. If that happens, their pachinko machines will see more demand (because the current loophole around the gambling laws won't be needed), and they will finally be able to sell, or set up parlors for, slot machines within Japan.

If they did leave altogether, they would be foolish to not license or sell their IPs to other game makers. It's ready been said many times in the past few days that dumb companies will sit on their IPs for years, doing nothing with them, like a dragon protecting its useless pile of treasure. Konami is beginning to look like that dragon right now, but they could get smart and license third parties to make games, while retaining the rights for other amusement machines (slots, pachinko, etc.) and merchandising. It would only cost them some time as consultants/overseers on each project, compared to selling off an IP completely and getting a one time payment. Only time will tell if they really have become so short sighted to not use the IPs at all.

If they pull out of console gaming, wouldn't that essentially mean they would pull our of gaming entirely? From what I remember, they aren't exactly present on PC.

Damn right. It's bad enough the remake of MGS1 was Gamecube only. I don't want the one franchies I've always been able to get on Playstation suddenly go to Nintendo exclusively.

While I feel the same, ultimately, Bayonetta 2 was amazing. They have shown us they can let the developers work the magic. For the sake of Snake I'll maybe, maybe get a wii u, even.

Hey, it's better than EA getting them or something.
