now is kotor 2 the better game gameplay wise? No same gameplay as kotor 1, graphics same too.

No the story and lore is were the two kotors are different. and in a way, kotor 2 story is better then kotor's 1, because it explains why the star wars story always seems to repeat no matter what time its placed in.

Heres a forum from me talking about the subject:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.318601-the-star-wars-story-why-it-repeats#12988905

which most of my post from this post:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.318571-Trailers-Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-Signs-of-War#12987847

In fact the only reason why kotor 2 is hated is because its a buggy game, its story is praised.
The same result happened with fallout 3 and fallout NV, different developer for the former, same one that made kotor 2 for the latter. the result is the same, the story is different and overall better, while the game is itself buggie. So kotor 1 has the better made game, while kotor 2 has the better story some rather good sw lore. Maybe if Osdidan wasn't forced to make games like a year after its predecesser, they would make a game that's has not only a great story but also is better grade since they had the time to fix out the many bugs, which they haven't had a chance to before. I would love to play a game made by them, if they were given the time to make it more then a year, and to be little more then be a cash in squeal. Who knows, why made have better story tellers then Bioware, if they were given the chance.

I really liked KotOR 2.

But KotOR 1 had one of the best plot twists of all time. Who ever saw that coming? I certainly didn't, but when you look back, it all makes perfect sense.

Thats debatable. KOTOR 2's story is unfinished unless you mod it, and KOTOR 1's story is far superior.
yes because the game in unfinished because it was more or less a cash in, and yet the game developer was able to make a more intertresting story that kinda broke the sw mode, and explained sw repeats itself again and again.

I have both KotOR 1 and KotOR 2... I never even finished 2. I just... couldn't do it. Not nearly as fun as the first one.

Ha! Apart from the plot-twist, the original KOTOR's story is your standard Good vs Evil Star Wars space opera.

KOTOR II's story wasn't that unfinished. More importantly, it was an incredible deconstruction of both the Star Wars mythos and RPG tropes, and had some of the deepest, most morally ambiguous characters in any Star Wars story.

You may like KOTOR's campy story over KOTOR II's brooding tale, and that's fine. But one is significantly less hackneyed and cliched than the other, and it's not the original.
aye this man got the idea.

Well, if KOTOR 2 was ever finished it might have ended up as the better game. As it stands, it has the same gameplay (but more buggy), and a far, far worse story that makes no sense whatsoever and then ends. Oh, and Taris was bad, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the mining asteroid level.

I love Kotor 2's story. I love how it actually explains how and why things are happening instead of just going with the old "because it's the force" standby that's in every damn star wars story.

Well, it is in Kotor 2, but it's at least explained.

Your character can't feel the force. Instead you used the force through everyone around you. This is why you are able to form such strong force bonds with people, and why it makes it so easy for others to follow you and do things they normally wouldn't do(common RPG trope, this is the only game where it makes a lick of sense). It also explains how your powers return. It is also why you must face Nihilus. Nihilus feeds off of the force, but you have no trace of the force in you, so he can't feed on you. That makes you the best choice to fight him.

It also explains why Kreia always hounds you for making plain good/evil choices. You can completely turn away from the force, ignore the force, yet you keep choosing to submit to it. This drives her crazy, and as I said explains why she always hounds you.

It also explains why you're so dear to Kreia. Through you, she can kill the force, so it can no longer hold influence over her, or anyone's life, ever again.

Damn great story, damn great characters... this game's story is easily the best star wars story in any medium ever.

I like both games, and I like different facets of both better than the other. Kotor 2 had better atmosphere and more depth to its characters and a more interesting premise. Kotor 1 had the better gameplay, the better polish and the better dialogue. However, as a self-contained game, given that Kotor 2 was shipped with a massive amount of bugs and wasn't even finished I have to say that Kotor 1 is a far better game overall. Even though Kotor 2 has some awesome aspects, it fails overall as a self-contained package.

I love both, but I always saw KotOR as the more refined one. Mostly, because it's a sequel so I assume it is. And to be honest I don't remember which one was KotOR 1 or 2. I remember them both as one game. They are equally good to me.

This sums it up nicely, when I found out the plot twist in KotOR 1, I literally didn't believe it, until the game went through it and I was like "... OH WHAT TH-..." and it all made perfect sense.

That and KotOR 1 runs on my craptop, KotOR 2 doesn't because of "Hardware Transform and Lighting" which my laptop can't do... -.-

Look, clearly, this is a discussion best left unfinished. We're not past the first page and the flame wars have ALREADY begun.

Due to its unfinished story, Kotor 1 comes out superior (restoration mod is only available to the US versions) for me.

Still, even in its unfinished state, Kotor 2's plot and characters are still infinitely superior to that of KotoR 1, which is pretty much your basic good vs evil space opera with only a plot-twist that makes the plot worthwhile and merely decent characters.

Yeah, it had a good plot-twist, but apart from it had nothing that even remotely stood out. A plot filled with predictable events, cliches and just nothing worth mentioning.

Both are broken, as in it's ridiculously easy to make yourself overpowered and just breeze through the game destroying everything. Although KotoR 1 actually does it worse, because in KotoR 1's most efficient build practically means that you're indestructible, while in KotoR 2 it merely means that you're very powerful.

I'm going to have to disagree with this part. Nearly all of KotoR 1's dialogue consisted out of good-neutral-bad choices. In KotoR 2, there were actually parts that only consisted out of having a long, neutral-choice based discussion with other NPC's. Those parts alone bring the dialogue of KotoR 2 far beyond that of Kotor 1 if you ask me. I have yet to see any game do that so efficiently.

Pretty much. If only Obsidian actually polished and finished their games. I hated the unfinished sub-plots in my game (which I can't mod, due to it being the EU version).

Agreed completely. Couldn't have said it better myself.

I hear that. And I've begun holding Kreia up as the best written NPC ever.

What didn't you get? I'd be more than happy to explain anything and everything about the story.

KOTOR 1 was just great - it was the first of its kind, it delivered the goods, had a good plot, didn't crap all over the franchise's back-story and and it actually had some challenge to it (well not a lot, but if you fell asleep you could die). Plus two HUGE mind-farks regarding your character and one of the other main characters.

KOTOR 2 was doomed to follow in its footsteps from the beginning because it could never be as good. But a couple of things it did that were clear mistakes: 1) unfinished story and obviously rushed ending; 2) Your character was WAAAY overpowered and all Jedi were too (that didn't make up for the one good part that non-jedi were more useful, in particular ranged shooters); 3) the story was OK but damn it was hard to get through it all in a comprehensible way!; 4) bugged character conversation/development trees made it hard to actually get all the story; 5) it makes you do the whole final level alone, after you spent all game composing your party to your liking (this also inevitably led to over-powering your character); 6) asteroid begining level = waaaaaaay toooooo looooooong. At least on Taris you are doing something and developing plot.

that beginning level in kotor 2 was freaking terrible, though. i had so much trouble getting through that part, but the rest of the game was great. either way, kotor 1 was better.
