KOTOR comes first every time. I love you ME but when I compare you two, you just don't hold up.

KotOR would be my choice...espcially if you are into old school style RPGing.

Granted it's old school RPGing using lightsabers, but you get the idea.

KotOR, that was among the best console RPG's I's ever played. It was fun, lots of ways to go about things, and you got the best of starwars in there (lightsabers and wookies). I still wish they'd make a KotOR 3 instead of going for the MMO, but yeah, it was great. Also like someone else mentioned, HK-47 is arguable the worlds most memorable character, he's such a passive-aggressive ass, you have to be dead inside not to love him.

Also, I was not a major fan of mass effect. Honestly between the glitches and the stupid vehicle sections, I couldn't even finish it.

KoTOR is the better of the two, but they're both fantastic games made by one of the best studios out there. You can't go wrong with either.

Also, yes, Taris is a bit slow. Once you escape the planet, it really picks up. Please give it some time.

If you play KoTOR one, I strongly advise the sequel as well, since it is so heavily story-based.
The story, music, and art design isn't as good in the second one, but a lot of the characters are stronger and they have much better voice acting than their KoTOR I counterparts.

Hope you enjoy!

KOTOR was glitchy and had a clunky combat system. Mass Effect played soother, had slightly better writing, and was an original universe. For that Mass Effect is a clear choice.

If you like Star wars then you will love KOTOR. If you are looking for a great game, mass effect is probably better to someone who is not bothered either way.

both are dull in the beginning. personally, I liked mass effect more (and i'm a huge star wars fanboy) but kotor is a classic.

Mass Effect ATW but it is only because LOTOR is not my cup of tea, the only thing I like about LOTOR is its expansive background and story

KOTOR for it's general HK content.
Then ME for it's general funny-ness that stems from being an evil sod.

oh hey, my two favorite games of all time...I'd say go with KotOR first, just because it came out first, and if you haven't played it yet you need to correct that mistake ASAP. The Mass Effects are modern, so you having not played them yet is a little more forgivable...

This :p

Back on the topic:
Gameplay is NOT similar.
I'm not a huge KotOR fan, but I'd rather suggest to start with it.

KOTOR, obviously. Is this even a real question?

Make sure to get the restoration patches and that stuff, it really does enhance a player's experience.

Oh god, yeah that was the thing about KotOR that pissed me off.
Taris sucks... a lot. It really really sucks.
better than Pagarus (is that the name of that asteroid?) because at least Taris had people to talk to and a city to wander around in.

on another note, Mass Effect is very fast-paced and action-oriented while KotOR is more Role-Playing focused, and then there's the fact that your character is mute, so it kind of breaks immersion.

Start with KOTOR. It is a great game, but after playing Mass Effect (which is one of the best games evar) it might become a bit too hard to get into.

I played KOTOR II I think (may have been the first) But I just didn't have the patience to do the first level when you're the droid and have to do whatever you had to do. Then I learned that it was a turned based RPG, something that I really have no personal taste for. So I just stopped playing it, not that it sucked, it just wasn't for me.
