Ok. So now that the Steam sale is truly up and running, I'm considering nabbing SW:KotOR for like ?4.50.

I'm just wondering, before I buy, what EXACTLY gives it claim to being the best Star Wars game in existence? I've heard so much about how amazing it is, but nobody has ever really given me a solid answer in the respect of why it is so good.

So, Escapists! Your challenge is to tell me. What makes KotOR so good?

PS: Don't just say "It's a bioware RPG" because that's not specifying ANYTHING

it's an RPG set in the world of Star Wars, isn't that kinda cool? If not, maybe the game just isn't for you.
Yeah, it is a bit... But still, I tend to take any critic's reviews with a pinch of salt.

A very, very big pinch... More of a handful. I prefer hearing other gamers' opinions on the matter, as opposed to people who get paid to review them.

Well for me, being a Star Wars geek and all, it was awesome to see an RPG set in that universe. And also, while you claim otherwise, exactly because it is a Bioware RPG it has interesting charaters a well told story, a wealth of ways in which to play your characters with different powers, dark/light side and all that. For me, the story of the second game is superior, and while I've heard a lot of complaints about it being bug-ridden and unplayable, I really didn't experience it being that bad the 5 times or so I played it through.

Even with that in mind, they're both terrific games, the first game, while seemingly has a straight-forward story(you're the hero, who's going to save the world), it does have a nice twist near the end. All in all a very well-rounded game, and one of my favorites of all time.

So really, if you like Star Wars and RPGs, it's definitely a game for you, it's got the Star Warsy feeling, even if it's set in a completely different era, because of love for the lore SW.

It has a compelling story and some interesting characters. I wouldn't say the combat is that great, but the locations are varied and interesting.

Its Good, If you like star wars, The combats got a steep learning curve as you go on, The gameplay is a bit buggy. But it is still a very good game, If you can look past a few things.

As you can see by my username, i used to play the game religiously back in the days of the original Xbox. It is my favourite RPG of all time, and always will be i dare say.

The one thing i can tell you is that the storyline is incredibly enriching and the bigger the Star Wars fan the more you will enjoy it. Some have disliked the combat system, but that comes down to personal preference i have always assumed as there aren't any notable flaws in it.

Just give it a go, you don't have much to lose by purchasing it any way. Oh and the PC version in my eyes doesn't seem to feel notably dated, which is of coarse a good thing.

I haven't really played much of the first, mostly the second. I thought the second was good, and the first is supposed to be even better, so I'd say give it a try.

KoTOR was the only game to make me feel bad about playing the bad guy.
In other games I don't like the bad guy story, but I actually felt guilty in koTOR 2, enough to change sides. And the first apparently is better.

So I'd say go ahead.

If you enjoy the RPG genre this game should be enjoyable for you. Even if you don't, you still might enjoy it if you're a fan of storytelling in games.

Gameplay mechanics wise I didn't enjoy the game too much. I don't enjoy very many RPG's for their gameplay though. I'm just not a big fan of RPG alone (that said I love RPG elements in my strategy).

I DID love KoTOR for it's story though (especially if we're including KoTOR II). I think it's one of the most impressively deep and intriguing stories to have been released in the Star Wars setting.

It's got well defined characters. HK-47 is one of the most memorable video game characters ever created. I've always been fond of Jolee Bindo myself. The dialogue options give you some fun options no matter how you play it (the good options can lead to hilarious situations with the bad characters. The bad options can lead to hilarious situations with the good characters. Any option comes with plenty of drama).

Of course the game has it's flaws. It's system of light side/dark side is the typical "Do I save everyone for free or murder kittens?" and there were a few buggy/glitchy situations. Some of the stories it railroads you into are boring, while some missions seem legitimately half-done and rushed (the trial for Jolee's friend stands out as a perfect example).

So... if you like Bioware games like Mass Effect, then you'll love this game. If you don't, then it's more of a risk. For the price tag though, I'd say there's no real reason not to get it.

It's one of my favourite games ever, all the reasons why have already been mentioned I think.

However, when I tried to run it on Windows 7 a few months ago, it wouldn't go past the start screen for some reason. :/

Thanks for the warning.
I'm on Win7. Should probably look around to see if that's common or just once off.

What's good about kotor? Everything.
What's bad about it? It has to end at some point.
I've played these games so much I actually almost wore my cd's down.
Go play it.

Well to be fair I did give up fairly quickly after trying to see if it would run in Win XP mode. :p There's bound to be some simple reason why it won't work that I'm overlooking.

Probably... I might just get The Witcher instead. After all, I doubt that'll have any trouble running on Windows 7...

I'm amazingly lazy when it comes to trying to sort things out :p

I had a better gfx card sitting around for exactly 4 months before I actually installed it :p

I have the Steam version running on Windows 7 Enterprise and there have been no major problems with it.

It has a good few problems with 64bit systems, you get random crashes without an extra patch or 2

As for why its the best:

Amazing characters, great voice acting, interesting quests, very good battle system, excellent main storyline(one of the best in the starwars universe, original but still faithful) and a fantastic use of force powers.

Also if you get full light or dark side you get a kind of leotard with the crest on it when you take off all you clothes.

The witcher is also good but if you like star wars at all this is the one to go for.

Ok. The Witcher for 4 euro or KotOR for 4.50?

I'll lay down some background. I'm a fan of Star Wars, but I wouldn't be the type who enjoys reading too much into it. I mean, the movies were fun (the original trilogy that is, and I guess Phantom Menace was ok...) but apart from that I don't really pay much attention to it.

I know this deviates from the original post, but in regards to The Witcher, what's the gameplay like?

I'm the same with star wars i never really read many of the books but kotor sucked me in.
The gameplay in the witcher is more hack and slash than traditional rpg. There are 3 fighting styles you change between depending on who you are fighting and you build combos by pressing the mouse at the right time. You also make potions to give you buffs. The story is also good if you like fantasy novels

The majority of Steam-KoTOR's issues on W7 can be fixed by running it in windowed mode, instead of full screen.

But it -is- an old game. It can react badly and become unplayable if your modern hardware can't agree with it.

Because it has the following; great story, likable and fleshed out characters, GODDAMN AMAZING TWIST, and a pretty good combat system.
