I feel obligated to post this relevant (and amusing) video:

OT: I am a guy, so no.

HAHAHAHAHA that is one reason I love the internet. Absolutely priceless.

OT: I like it when the creepers jump on the female gamers makes for great comedy. I myself think its ridiculous to pursue an "internet relationship" lol. But yeah to the original poster I haven't been in an online game where a female wasn't pounced upon by a bunch of creepers like starving hyenas to a dead zebra, so you'll will either have to learn to live with it or just not communicate in games. There are those of us males out there that can communicate in a mature manner on the internet, but not alot of us.

Whilst I'm not a woman, I have seen people hit on women on MMORPG's. The guild I'm in WoW right now for example is like 50% females for some reason, and there are a shitload of creeps who constantly try and flirt with them. It's quite funny to watch admittedly, though I do feel sorry for the women. My friend (who's male) even pretends to be female because he gets so much free shit, he's been given gold, epics, crafting materials and so much more just for acting like an innocent, geeky girl.

But yeah, I'm not really surprised reading your post.
HAHA! My friend did that too. He got like god tier items from one dude if they could date(which they didn't)

Yeah I am a guy and do not take part in it at all. If a girl end up in a nice coversation with me that fine enough, I dont do anything it muchthe same online and real life.

How ever I girls as friends and one girl has such bad luck. She can take it. Except she is hut on all the time as usal. Except she even has had decent friends just flip a switch and try very hard to go out with her. One even proposed to marry her and detailed a 10 year plan with her for kids and a summer home in japan......yeah she dosnt talk to him anymore.

I met a guy on xbox that is 40 and since xbox live for xbox 1 he has been putting on a girls voice (extremly convincing) and has whored himself out and has had free xboxs sent to him, he has sold them for profit. he dosnt have to pay for anything. Even had a guy send him daimond errings and sold them. This is now his job.

He has a suger daddy that get him to play on saints row 2 and basicly just oggles his female character.

There is a profit to be made if you have the stomach to take advantage of some very very very strange and rich lonely guys.

I think girls need to get over themselves.
They're not as rare as they think.
And not even half as special as they'd like to imagine themselves as.
And I see (or rather hear through mics) plenty of chicks on TF2.
You say you have met many women online, yet your statement makes me think that you have never even talked to one. I have never once met a female online who has made a big deal about her gender. I have met men who go nuts over women playing games, but that hardly seems like the fault of the girl. You are placing the blame at the feet of the wrong people.

The ridiculous bold lettering was a nice touch, by the way.
uh I don't know what you play but I'm tired of hearing this "Randomnickname: So any girls in here besides me?"

If that's not attention whoring, tell me what it is.
I haven't ever heard anyone sat that.
That being said, a few attention whores don't represent all of the female gender. Acting as though all women should bear the burden of the ego of a few fools is unfair.
Never said a few attention whores represent the female gender. But it's just like kids on CoD, not all of cod players are kids, but as soon as one enters, he starts yelling with his squeaky voice. With females, you never notice them, untill one of them starts attention whoring. So I probably stumbled upon PLENTY of female gamers, but of those who I noticed were females, 80% were whoring.
That 80% does NOT speak for the other 20% of us than you very much. And that 80% is of your own personal poll. For the majority of games I've played, including WoW, only about 10% are attention whoring. The 90% don't care, they're there for the game, NOT guys. In my case, I was there for the game, NOT guys. I just happened to be harassed enough to give up my myspace link, and what happened after was NOT on my agenda. I didn't start playing WoW looking for attention, I happened to be dating a guy, and that guy got me into WoW. We werent together when I met the guy I've been talking to for the past 2 years, and I didnt go into the guild looking for a relationship or attention. So your 80% is not everyone's 80%.
Please note that when I say attention whoring I do not say actively seeking a boyfriend, I mean "I'm a girl look at me, give me gold" etc etc bullshit.

And the reason that percentage is so high is because I DON'T go around asking if people are guys or girls, I just play, don't give a crap. That's the reason that when I know someone's a female is because she is purposely rubbing it in front of EVERYONE'S FACE which is, as I stated earlier, attention whoring.

I am talking about random gaming here, of course. When you get in clans and stuff the percentage lowers a lot, as you can tell if someone's female by their voice without them directly telling you.
As a female gamer who plays games with a lot of other female gamers, I have to say I have never, ever heard a girl say or do anything close to attention whoring except for ONE girl, who seemed to have emotional problems (Im talking about everything from shooters to mmorpgs to strategy games). Sorry you had to encounter that, but its not the norm. The girls you are interacting with are either 12 or act like theyre 12, and that is not 80% of girl gamers. The only reason I ever got "gold/items" was because my avatar was female and I had made male friends online (I also did it for the lulz) but attention whoring is not common.

Well, it isn't completely useless. After playing WoW for a long time, I've seen it bring together three couples together, 2 of which are now married. Maybe it isn't such a long shot after all? Even still, I can't see it being worth it on something like TF2, where you'll likely never see the person again.

None of my fellow gamers participate in forums because what a hive of sexism and male privilege they are (
The Internets: You will never find a more wretched hive of sexism and privilege. We must be cautious.

In truth the sexism and "male privilege" are not the device of the many, but the taint of the few. Take into account "trolling" trolls make up the smallest part of any community, but they can make there presence known the most. Most people online are not sexist, or trying to get with or hold women down. It's just a coupling with the anonymity of the internet mixed with age or rage (hormonal or actual). Take into account a bar. You walk into a bar, you are most likely going to be hit on. But notice how its not the entire bar. You are just representing the many (the male) by the actions of the few (the jack asses)

While we are at fault for fostering and help creating this air of maleness on line, it does not mean we all are of like mind. Hell alot of it plays into a stereotype, you call me an animal so i will behave like an animal. The gamer stereotype is consumed by games, socially inept, living at home, and sub-par on the attractive scale. When you take that stereotype of gamers, you begin to see how gamers are conditioned to "see them selves". In the eyes of society that is who they are lumped with, so they are not afraid to behave that way.

In short, fuck the system, lets burn it down and start again!
Then I ask you, as such a female who deals with this, when you do find a male gamer harassing a female gamer, call them the fuck out. Don't let that atmosphere continue. Sitting idly by and going "yeah, it sucks, but that's the name of the game" is useless. Check your privilege and help out.

I don't think this is hopeless. Games like Mass Effect are wonderfully gender blind and when games like Brink come out male-only, they get lambasted. That's a good sign. I hope in a few years, I'll be more comfortable with this industry I love so much.

Idk if I've played with girls online before, but when a girl posts on a forum, everyone drools over her. I personally find it highly irritating.

For the record, there is nothing wrong with a male only game. Just like there's nothing wrong with an all female game. If you or someone can't play a game due to something like that, it's not the games problem, but rather yours. TF2 is all men and I like it. I liked FFX-2, it's all girls. However the game director wants it made is how it should be.

While it certainly does happen in TF2, I've heard an awful lot of women actually courting the attention.

Extreme example: there used to be a female pyro on my server who was constantly sexually aggressive. One time, when an ubered heavy kept getting airblasted back by her, he laughed (innocently, he didn't know she was female), "quit blowing me!" - to which she replied over mic, "you wish I was blowing you". It used to really annoy me, it was like she was determined to bring sex into the issue when the rest of us were just trying to have fun and play the game.

To OPs original question though: As a woman I do get where you're coming from, and have occasionally experienced some smutty remarks/someone trying to chat me up in steam chat... but to be honest, where exactly doesn't that happen? I wouldn't say that it's any worse than any other male-dominated environment. It's nothing that I wouldn't hear down the pub, you know?

A bigger reason that I don't use mic is because I've noticed that men tend to give women preferential treatment. They'll praise a female player even if what she's doing isn't particularly impressive, and rarely yell at her for doing something stupid that they'd otherwise rip someone a new arsehole for. I like to know when I've cocked something up, so I keep schtum. I don't want my gender being used as some sort of excuse for my playing badly.

I see this way too often >.> The worst is when its people I actually know over the interwebs and you just think "Teh fuck are they doing o.0 >.>"

But I find that online guys seem to lie about their relationship status a hell of a lot >.> I was playing with a really good IRL friend (The fact that I call it that makes me cringe D:) And he didn't know I was playing on the same server as him. He started talking about how his girlfriend had died by being hit by a train in order to get sympathy and win over a girl I believe >.> And while with some I can only presume this, but it does seem as if people lie a lot about their relationship status over the internet D:

Edit: I should make it clear that No his girlfriend was not hit by a train but in face never existed.

I am aware, and I know these girls are not the rule, but yeah, as I said, they are much that noticeable

Also try raiding as a male rogue and then try riding as a female hunter. INVITES AHOY

I would tentatively disagree, but that has to due more with narrative and how women are forced to have their stories told from a male perspective and how that reinforces blah blah blah, you get the idea.

Make me play a male character in a story-driven game, sure. I loved playing Snake as much as anybody. But if your game touts customization of Player Characters and you completely cut out female characters? Then you lose massive points.

(Also, this is a bit of WMG, but I'm in the camp that thinks Pyro is a woman. I like Valve's little hints towards that, though I wish they would just come out with it.)

I wouldn't hit on a girl over the internet unless I knew her. Don't read that wrong though, it's not a matter of thinking it would make me look like a creep or because I can't do it, I just prefer to be able to talk to people in person. You don't get the body language or the hilarity of quick wit and things like that when you talk online. Also, I lied, I wouldn't want to seem like a creep either.

my girlfriend doesnt play games of any sort, in fact whenever i mention games at all she goes into some old story about how there was this game she played about 11 years ago where you play as a mouse trying to get some cheese as if thats at all relevant to whatever im talking about.

i still love her though despite her not sharing my hobby.

I'm a guy but one of my characters on WoW is a female, and some guys got it into their head that i was a girl so i started getting hit on.

That was a weird experience, i mean i've seen guys flirt with girls and jokingly done the very same in the past. I dunno this was just so much creepier.

Got an ass load of free stuff for about a month though, so all's well that ends well i suppose.

I hate it when woman always want to point out the fact that they're woman...

I don't really care, I just want a conversation... But no...
