I've been on the other side of the spectrum, I met a girl in an MMO and she wanted to be "BF/GF" online. I was weirded out I must say, but now I kinda kick myself.
Why? Did not you accept?

If it makes you feel better, you can just think it was a guy in disguise looking to get free shit from you. God knows that I've done it. (AND AM NOT ASHAMED!)
I told her "After I complete a couple of quests" yada yada.
I ended up talking to her a lot later, and on MSN, found out she was most likely a hottie too by the fact she went to the gym often.

This is sort of making me think that Gabe Newell had a good idea when he talked about the "meritocracy" of a social game. If people are respectful and keep fair distance for female gamers, maybe fewer of them will feel the need to hide every bit of their identity. Then, when the ratio is more commonly accepted (3 out of every 10, etc), finding a girl online won't be a "massive treasure find" and nobody will care.

With a degree of frequency. It depends where on the internet too. I've been hit on here several times when I used to post more.

Oh? Why do you say that? /Genuinely curious.
'Cause it's true, that's why. The only guys I ever meet who actually still seem to like me after they meet me in person are always married, and I ain't going there.

I don't understand why anyone would flirt with anyone online. It's just weird, most people I talk to here on the escapist doesn't even live in the same country as me and this is very shallow, but the person may be ugly.

The Internets: You will never find a more wretched hive of sexism and privilege. We must be cautious.

In truth the sexism and "male privilege" are not the device of the many, but the taint of the few. Take into account "trolling" trolls make up the smallest part of any community, but they can make there presence known the most. Most people online are not sexist, or trying to get with or hold women down. It's just a coupling with the anonymity of the internet mixed with age or rage (hormonal or actual). Take into account a bar. You walk into a bar, you are most likely going to be hit on. But notice how its not the entire bar. You are just representing the many (the male) by the actions of the few (the jack asses)

While we are at fault for fostering and help creating this air of maleness on line, it does not mean we all are of like mind. Hell alot of it plays into a stereotype, you call me an animal so i will behave like an animal. The gamer stereotype is consumed by games, socially inept, living at home, and sub-par on the attractive scale. When you take that stereotype of gamers, you begin to see how gamers are conditioned to "see them selves". In the eyes of society that is who they are lumped with, so they are not afraid to behave that way.

In short, fuck the system, lets burn it down and start again!

Never happened to me personally. ...But then again, the one multiplayer game where I was openly female kinda made hitting on the girls against the rules because you weren't allowed to make characters that were not your gender. No clue why...

I used to play L4D online and this would happen to me allll the time. I thought it was really pointless for guys half a world away to be flirting with me even though they had no clue who I am.

Now my big multiplayer game is League of Legends, and no one can hear my voice so I just get treated like anyone else. I get insulted and told that I suck etc. (even though i don't but that's a different subject -_-) once in a while I tell trolls Im a chick just for fun, and I either get trolled harder or they are like "oh Im sorry Im sorry do you have a Facebook account?" or "I bet youre an ugly fat chick" <---to which I LOL very, very hard especially cause of the way I look an act in real life (nothing like they would assume). The assumptions people make are completely over the top...its lulz-worthy to me, people make such a huge deal about "gamer chicks" even though were like...50% of gamers.

Nah, what was the saying again?

There are no women on the internet, those pretending to be one are old men, and children are FBI agents? :)

Also, thanks the binary lords for the mute/ignore feature :)

Male here. I know a lot of girl gamers, most of whom don't get hit on so much. i'm not sure how many hours they rack up on TF2 though.

Rest assured, I don't hit on girls online. I don't play online very much for a start

The internet: Where the men are men, the women are men, and the children are FBI agents.

Which is true! As I've mentioned a few times on this thread alone, I generally choose female characters/avatars for games. Partially because I'd rather have to stare at a digital woman's ass for most of the game as opposed to a digital male ass, and partially because I can pretend to actually be a girl and get free things from desperate boys/men.

I don't usually talk enough about me while gaming online for people to know I'm female.
As for things like IRC and forums, I'm usually the one who does the flirting :p I certainly don't mind it. I only think it gets creepy when they want to send you naked pictures even though you barely know each other (or ask you for some). Chatting and stuff is cool though, although I guess it would get annoying if every talked turned into "you're female OMG" instead of whatever else we'd want to discuss.

I find on IRC and forums there are enough females that I'm never the only one or anything like that, so it's really not a big deal. Since when playing WoW and the like I don't let people know I'm female, I figure it's not that there are less females, but less who are openly so, so they get annoyed more, they tell other people, and more of them do like me and just keep a low profile. Vicious circle right there.

What the fuck am I supposed to do when playing an RTS!? It's many things but it's not exactly balls-to-the-wall! It's either talk or sit here and watch my economy counters tick over for an hour.
You're not playing StarCraft 2, I can tell.

I can proudly say that I've never hit on a girl gamer right off the bat.
I have been flirty with a couple of girls in my wow guild, though, but it was always mutual and in good non-serious fun.
Also, I didn't intend to be flirty in the first place.
It just happens sometimes.
