As a guy I don't do this because the chances of actually getting a GF through these methods are very slim and even if she does say yes the probability that she lives near you is about 0%. Basically there is too much energy being used for something that I know is most likely not going to work so I don't even try, that and I'm socially competent so I can get my GF's IRL.
It's weird when some guy hits on you even though your using male avatar. One of the reasons I quit WoW.
And there's been successful relationships (Often through marriage) so it's not really bad. It's just another medium to guys hit at girls. And it's perfectly normal.
I've found myself quite addicted to TF2 as of late, and subsiquently I've often found myself as the only female on whatever server I reside. This results in a lot of teasing and trolling, both of which I expect going in.
What I wasn't quite prepared for was how many guys seriously seek relationships through such meetings. I mean really, I've played MMORPGs before and never have I come across so many desperate guys in my life. One guy said if ever I find myself in southern Pennsylvania I should look him up, just before signing off. And so many others have ended up moaning and groaning when I mention the TF2 hat my boyfriend gave me for my birthday (and the physical version he bought and packaged like a gift in the game).
So, fellow ladies, how often do you find this happening? Not being teased or trolled for being a female on the Internets, but being creeped and hit on, by completely straight-faced guys?
I was playing TF2 yesterday and was laughing when a girl came into the server and all of a sudden almost everyone had mic's in and were trying to chat her up. Soooooo funny...im not that kind of guy though.
Although I notice it a LOT more in TF2 than anywhere else...dunno why
Guys being general creepers towards anything female is one of the main reasons I don't have XBL (the other main reason being that I'm cheap as hell). I've played online using a friend's account before, and... well... it's really, really annoying. I get enough lewd comments/dangerously-close-to-sexual-harassment-stuff in real life. I don't want it to infect one of my favorite hobbies, as well.

Pfft, you ladies should be grateful that guys give you the time of day when they can't even see if you're pretty or not. You lot should take such advances as compliments, not get offended over flirtation attempts.
It's not that I get offended that people make advances to me. It's the immediate "OMG can I see your boobs" or some far more obscene comment that I'm offended by.

Tits or gtfo has been my xbox like personal message for some years now. Haven't been ban hammered yet. But it's not like that cause I'll hit on anything female on line, it's like that cause it's a funny meme. Which leads to the question if the harassment of female gamers is legitimate attempt at intimacy, of if it's just for the lulz.
If you're a guy, and all you do is play video games, your sex drive goes through roof. Then you have a conversation similar to one I heard while playing Left 4 Dead:
Guy: Are you a girl?
Girl: Yeah, why?
Guy: I was wondering if I could ?
Me: (Is he serious or trolling?)
Trust me when I say you don't want to know what he said 8l
Disgusted, horrified, yet slightly intrigued sounds like me every second of my life because the people around me. Also it's partly that you REALLY don't to know what he said (because what he said was just strange), and partly because the Escapist would ban my account, and then burn it.
I think to some extent flirting is okay, but it is always obvious when guys flock to you when you're playing because you're a girl. I've had positive and negative experiences with flirting online - one of my best relationships was born from online interactions, but unfortunately, more often than not I've been stalked - to the point that I had to go dark for a bit to avoid being pursued. I think there's a fine line when it comes to flirting online - you miss a lot of physical cues. The best kind of online flirting comes from wanting to develop a good *gaming* relationship or forum friendship over wanting a romantic relationship right away - get to really know who you're talking to online before you start making moves.

Actually, lot of women don't think it's all that funny. So, while you think you're being funny, there are probably several people out there who think otherwise.
This is funny, because I'm a guy and when I pc game people hit on me ALL THE TIME. It's really creepy, actually, and I cant imagine how much ACTUAL females get hit on.
EDIT: Though I do get hit on by females too. Maybe people just like to hit on me.

This is kinda a case by case thing I think. If like you meet them online and are talking to them a bit get to know each other. Then by some random chance end up in the same place, there is nothing wrong with meeting up. However if just complete randoms are hitting on you just because you are a chick, I find that really weird. Just for the record I'm a guy and yeh sometimes it isn't easy to find a girl but I wouldn't go and ask complete randoms in real life so I wouldn't do it in a game either. I guess some people have no problem hitting on complete strangers but I prefer not to unless a girl is sending me obvious signals, which happens a lot less than I would like : P

Completely off-topic, but I approve of Hula-Mouri.
On topic: Funny enough I'm a guy and I was only hit on once by a guy when I was playing Trickster Online. My character was a Magician and a couple guys came onto me.
I'm a guy, but it's pretty bad on TF2. We had this one girl on the server and everyone was just so focused on her. Asking her sex questions and whatnot. Apparently I was the only one who found it to be awkward. Even she was cool with it.

Some guys like the underage girl thing. I think it's called a loli fetish or something. If I remember right.
Yeah, it's kinda flattering and a compliment to get hit on while playing a game. I was playing Black Ops earlier and had music playing and some of the guys liked the one song. I cant remember what I had playing, but I had someone go "that's a good song" and then they asked "who's playing it?" I tend to stay quiet during Black Ops. I tend to stay quiet in most games with voice chat. I would play WoW and be on Vent but wouldnt talk. I only had a VERY few conversations over Vent. One was with my ex boyfriends guild friend because him and my ex would be up until like 3am when I had class and a test the next morning at 8am, and I simply asked the guy if him and my ex could maybe keep it the fuck down for that reason. I pretty much got introduced in guilds as "Spores Woman." I havent been called that in forever thank God! I actually got kicked out of a guild because the one Army guy in the guild really liked me, and actually called my Marine friend and threatened to get him kicked out of the Marine's. I basically told the Army guy to go fuck himself, over the phone for crying out loud and his friend kicked me out of the guild a few days later.
Actually, I find I mainly don't get respected if people know I'm a woman in the game. Which really sucks because, yeah some girls are sluts and will go attention seeking, but that's on them. That's not all of us. Of course, that one guy did /gquit on us.
In case someone missed it, and wants to look, here's the link again: http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a313/Kheapathic/?action=view¤t=GuildQuit.jpg

My point was really it's called a loli fetish and some people, guy and/or girls actually, are into that. Personally, I am NOT one of them.
People, guys and girls both, can make a character look however they like - want and actually would like to be sleeping with. The guy I met on WoW and have been talking to for 2 years now, and I were playing Soul Calibur IV one day. He has this character he has cat ears on, and I randomly said to him "you want to do her don't you?" and he answered "Well, yeah." It's one of those, you make the character what you like.
I'm not a lesbian or bisexual or anything, but I do like how my characters look in WoW. And thankfully I haven't been hit on except maybe once for how they look. I stay out of Goldshire and places that people RP a lot. I'm not up for that and I know guys will RP with other guy and one will be a girl.
Just saying, the character is built however you want it to look (to a point). If other people like it, they'll make assumptions and hit on you for how the character looks. And you know what they say about assuming.
Anyway, online dating - especially through games - is completely pointless. Haven't tried, and I'm never going to. It amazes me how people always think it will somehow work out, and act all surprised when they break up.
The answer to "why" is always "why not." But seriously, us girls are a VERY popular topic as you can tell. And I'm not being conceited or anything. Just saying, girls and gaming are a pretty popular topic I guess.
