I'm trying to get my cousin to play shmups. I gave her Ikaruga as a chrismas present. Was that a good idea?

Actually despite the thread's initial 'off' OP I'm kinda impressed with the direction this thread has taken. It seems more of a 'bounce things off each other' thread rather than a 'bash men' thread that I thought it would become

On topic, every girlfriend, save for one, has understood my gaming fairly well. They do have a little problem with cutscene interruptions mostly, but considering they're not even gamers; I think that's a small price to pay

I try to keep my game collection diverse. My favorite genre is probably 2D Puzzle/ Platformers (a rare bunch of games, but I can't get enough of them), I also have a soft spot for old fashioned point and click games. I really like playing shooters with my friends and on xbox LIVE, and play most of my games on the 360, I play mostly strategy and indie games on the PC. I have a love/ hate relationship with RPGs, I love a lot of western RPGs especially ones made my Bioware, I despise Bethesda games and tend not to like JRPGs. I also tend not to like fighting games (just because I always get my ass handed to me by button mashers), and MMORPGs.
Currently i'm trying to make it through Amnesia in one piece, and making the most out of my friend's borrowed PS2.

Ikruga is a great game but I don't think it's a very good game to give someone who's just getting into the genre, she may get frustrated with the unforgiving difficulty.

Perhaps you should go and bake a pie to calm yourself down, or give birth? You know, fragile womanly activities. Very soothing, I'm told.
I do make pretty good chocolate cake ... I might.

Woman, you have impugned my cube. This shall not stand! I challenge you to a duel; pistols at dawn, winner keeps all Portal merchandise.
Dawn in which timezone?

I run into this problem a lot. There seem to be very few co-op games that let people play together, but go about their own business individually. Fable 2 did it, but it was shit-your-pants dreadful to play :-(
It isn't really co-op but why not play something like Gmod? Or Minecraft? You can play together but do your own thing. Or would that be too complicated for a girl not hugely into games?

"I want a gamer girlfriend who is also a hot babe who understands that I need to spend 24 hours a day on WoW and who won't try to actually have a relationship with me unless I need sex."
At the risk of sounding callous, the most important attribute a gamer's girlfriend (or boyfriend) can have is knowing when to leave us alone. If we're playing a game together, that's great. If I'm playing some light-hearted puzzle game we can chat about, that's cool too. If I'm absorbed in a twelve-hour Fallout session or if I'm beating down the archdemon in Dragon Age, now is not a good time to discuss where our relationship is going! Woman, I've got shit to kill/rob/molest, do I keep poking you when you're trying to read a book? No! Then do me the same courtesy.

Hmm. Reading it back, I sound like a douchebag, but oh well :p
You said it like a douchebag, but your point is still valid. Especially the book comparison. However, it only holds water if you don't spend all your free time playing, or reading. However, everyone needs time to themselves so I would like to modify your post and say that the best attribute in a girlfriend/boyfriend/friend-friend is knowing when a person needs to be left alone.

OT: Not much to say that is on topic, cuz I'm a guy. But I know my friend Mary, being in a computer design class, often buys games for the graphics, and being a gamer, the rest of the time she buys them for the gameplay. Her favorite genres are FPS RPG and whatever the hell genre you want to put katamari and geometry wars into.
