I'm having a LAN party with 5-6 of my friends next week. Any suggestion for games that we could play? I'm not looking for any specific genre and we're also fine with old titles, I just need fun, enjoyable games where we could make fun of each other.

Games like CoD or Halo are pretty good for get togethers, um I was gonna suggest Borderlands but thats a 4 player max game :(

If you're just going full PC, Diablo 2, Counter Strike, Worms Armageddon, Star Wars Jedi Knight 2/3, BF2142 Serious Sam FE/SE, Warcraft 3 TFT (make sure to download plenty of custom funmaps though, same goes for CS and Jedi)
Consoles I'm not as good with... Smash Bros and Bomberman are a given. One of the later Halos would be cool too.

If you have enough guys and are a sci-fi buff and/or Trekkie you should give this a shot:

Some free ones, as they're obviously easier for everyone to set up:

Trackmania Nations (Racing game, where you race each others ghosts over tracks with huge jumps and loop the loops in)
Warsow (Fast paced arena FPS, with some emphasis on trick movement)
Team Fortress 2! (Mann vs Machine update has a max of 6 players, so that could work well)

Other than that with some money, Killing Floor is always fun, Battlefield 2 is good and can be filled with bots on the other teams, Diablo 2/Titan Quest for some action RPG (Torchlight 2 as well when it's out).

That'll do for now, I used to go to lans with about 20 odd people so we played more team competitive stuff instead of small grouped Co-op that I think would suit 6 better.

I'll second Killing Floor and Frozen Throne.
SWAT 4 can be fun as long as no one is feeling particularly dickish, and Farcry 1 deathmatch is pretty good.
UT2004 is a pretty good one, or any of the other unreal tournaments.
Unfortunately a lot of the good co-op ones have a max of 4, like left 4 dead and borderlands which was previously mentioned.

Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is very fun.
Other than that I can't really think of anything besides ones that have been mentioned.

The crucial barrier to enjoyment at LAN parties is tech issues. Even with 5-6 people you could find yourself spending an hour trying to get a new game working for everyone. As the host/organiser, you should primarily concern yourself with making setup as painless as possible. With that in mind:

1) Go for older games. They are quicker to install, have better LAN support, and lower system requirements. There's nothing worse than being the guy who has to struggle along at 15 FPS because everyone else wants to play some new graphical marvel.

Suggestions: Unreal Tournament (2004 or the original). Command and Conquer Generals (Zero Hour). Battlefield 1942 (the Desert Combat mod is also fun). Starcraft (the original). Warcraft III (also Defence of the Ancients). For a slow-paced game when people are sleepy, how about Sins of a Solar Empire?

2) Try and make sure everyone has the games installed before they arrive. Even so, it is guaranteed that someone will turn up without a working install, or with a different patched version. Be sure to have working copy of each game available for that person to install. Download all the latest patches in advance, and have copies of them on multiple USB sticks. Don't bother trying to share crucial files over the network: that's almost always the biggest headache.

3) Check the LAN setup beforehand. Some domestic wireless routers will struggle to support 5-6 connections with low latency. Wired ethernet is almost always preferable, but then be sure to have enough cables. If in doubt, this website has detailed reviews of all the hardware you're likely to encounter: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ Look for the internal throughput of the device.

I saw that one on Node, and it looked really fun, especially with the screaming and the confusion

I think I'll try swat 4, jedi knights, and trackmania. We already do killing floor and CS regularly :)

TF2 MvM

I had a LAN when it just came out. We played all night. It's great.

Oh It's also perfect for 5-6 players. Unlike L4D where having an odd number mess with balance.

Serious Sam 2 is probably the most fun me and my friends have ever had at a LAN party. More people just make it more fun.

Posting from a LAN party, funnily enough.

We did a bout of MvM on TF2, some Tribes: Ascend, Goldeneye: Source, and The Hidden: Source.

We were prepped for Unreal 2K4, Minecraft, and a few others, but time, alas, was against us.

EDIT: Right, we did some Dungeon Defenders too, but that's only four-player. We also had a Wii set up for some SSBB, but that died really fast.

Red Alert 2 if you want some RTS. Me and my friends have had so much fun with that.

Sanctum got a limit of 4 players, but it's very good.
