Do you remember the hype when scientists finally invented a machine so colossal it warrants an underground city in order to recreate the Big Bang?

People were so excited, and if not, fucking scared that it was going to spawn a black hole and devour the entire planet (a couple emo teens already committed suicide when they heard about this).

Haven't heard a single fucking word about it since. Did it get abandoned or are the results really slow?
There's news from it just about every other week.

Here's what the <a href=http://www.bbc.co.uk/search/news/large_hadron_collider>BBC has to say...

TL;DR - The facility (as well as sister facilities over the world) have been pumping out a steady stream of data since they became operational.

They actually managed to trap antimatter for 16 minutes. It's a record breaking time and is a very exciting advancement.

I'd rather they found Cold Fusion than some damn boson.
...Yes. That would be useful. they could also look for the Loch ness monster and big foot while they are at it.
Well, as long as they're looking for some mythical thing that explains the Universe, it wouldn't be out of their way.

Particles that make up all matter ... including your fingers and your keyboard ... are hardly a myth.

But as I said, science can be intimidating enough to scare people into stuff like that. Like mythology or conspiracies.

The boson is though. I'm with Team Hawking on this one.

As far as I know it is up and running. I'm pretty sure they were looking for the Higgs particle also known as the god particle.

I really can't find anything regarding this team or the myth you are talking about.

I am aware theoretical physics are theoretical, until proven real.
Now, that's a job for LHC device. But theory still does not equal a myth, m8. You don't seem to understand how science works ...

It would still be able to move on to look for a different explanation for mass since it would be pretty useful to know how to manipulate mass.

Dude, do you fucking keep up with the news? There was MASSIVE news regarding the LHC the other day, when it basically disproved one of the biggest theories in physics! Seriously man... do a google search before you make a post sometime. It can save lives.

Dear science, stop wasting money and develop something usefull for once
sorry, but this kind of thinking irks me, whether or not people can see it the work being done by the LHC is useful, once we understand what gives things mass we can start to be able to manipulate it, or know never to try depending, also the energy given off by matter annihilation is insane, when we know what causes everything we can try to harness it and then be able to create energy without fossil fuels ect... sometimes it might seem like science is just being stupid, but look ahead, even the most insignificant little thing can have a huge impact, cancer can start with the alteration of a single nucleic acid....

Ah but how do you know the black hole wasn't already created and we are just trapped by it's gravitational time dilation field, maybe we are doomed already :p

Not too tough:

"I think it will be much more exciting if we don't find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again. I have a bet of $100 that we won't find the Higgs."
I'm still holding out for Superstrings.

But a renewable source of power would be much more useful to humanity than finding out how to alter matter by throwing Gigawatts into it. Cold fusion is theoretically possible, it's just that we need to find a fragile force under huge pressure. Deuterium unlocking was looking a lot like that for a bit.

Not a single occurrence of word "myth" or "team" in that article. It's all about theory and how to prove it though.

Guess that was my point, that myth and team were your interpretation of serious science as a duel of two fan clubs?

The other reason why news is slow is actually quite simple. You don't report on a building till it is complete. There are alot of ideas floating around from the data gathered but it will still be a few years before any Proper theories are tabled and overwhelming evidence can be sifted out to back them up. So any theories reported now are likely to be disproved as more data is gathered.
Tis what science is about and when you are dealing with partical physics ALOT of calculations and equations need to litterally be made before anyone can say this theory might actually hold water.

Well, by definition all black holes are invisible to the human eye, that's what makes them black holes!
You realise that if there was a black hole the size of a tennis ball in front of you, you'd be able to see it right?

It's a bit much for you to be telling people they don't understand the scientific method when you've just written about theoretical science being proven real. The method disproves theories, not proves them.

I just want to see some naysayers freak out.

Last I checked, experimental results can be positive or negative regarding to the theory. But sure, I'd love a link to more material if I am wrong there.

Still ... The point of it all was that myths have nothing to do with it, guess we agree on that bit?

As of yet they have eliminated (95% confidence) the initial energy ranges they thought they would find the Higgs-Boson in. So if the Higgs-Boson exists, its not where they expected it to be. They still have other ranges to check though.

They did create some super dense matter, 2nd only to a black hole. Other than that no news.
