I am a vary advid LARPer, and I was woundering is anyone else into this hobby? It seems that many people are drwn to it after playing games like WoW, or DnD, so this seemed like a place to ask.

Also if you do, what genres do you prefer, any weapons, or classes.

Hell if I'm not the only nerd LARPing share an awesome story or two.

I fight in Belegarth. It is the fighting with much less the role playing. I use a longsword. I sometimes use a shield with it. I am also an decent archer.

I have wanted to try something like that. I like the roleplay, but generally combat LARPs let you do more physical combat(shield bashing, charging, tripping)
I'm assuming you wear costumes to these.

Unfortunitly I have no idea where any are, but I have no shortage of LARPs to choose from.

I've always wanted to try LARPing, it seems like a hell of a lot of fun if you're with the right people.

Unfortunately I know of nowhere in my local area that would cater to such interests, so my options would appear to be very limited.

I'd love to LARP, but I live in the country in Australia so it's pretty hard to find. Even then, disability kinda limits my options, could be a pretty decent mage though. That and nobody I've never met in Australia plays anything like DnD and the like, the only thing being available is 40k, and that's bloody expensive.

Not really on topic, but I do want to try it.

I'm sorry, I laughed when I read the title...

Lightning bolt...

Anyway, I do not LARP but I doubt I could. The geek density around where I live is pretty weak and I've never even played D&D, but do enlighten me as to what it's like. What's it like? Do physical actions change the way you play the game? Are the rules heavy?

Hey that is on topic. You never know if someone happens to live near you and LARPs. I got into LARPing by talking to my highschool physcics teacher about the one he goes to. I now hit him with a foam sowrd.
One problem I find is that they are very underground, considering the stigma attached to them they are hard to advertise.

I live near Boston and if you live anywhere near New Eangland you can find LARPs. I know of at least 10 in and around mass alone.

Ha! I was about to say something similar. We Aussie nerds should unite to overthrow the bogans.

Yes physcal actions are the whole point. I don't roll a dice to see if I hit that orc. i have to run up and start pummeling him. Spell casting is done with packets, and I at a steam punk LARP I help staff at, we dump a dissisembled nerf gun in front of a person who wants to build one(an engeneer), and say have at it. If they can make it they get the effects, if not oh well.
Rules are generally things like spell effects, safety, and stay in character.

You may want to ask more specific questions and I can give better answers.

Last note. The lighting bolt guy, I LARP at the place where that happened, and I know many of the people in that video.

Thanks. Sounds legitimately interesting. Like the poster that was above me, I also live in Australia. It's really rare...

Pretty much this. In the prairie province of Canada, you don't get much D&D fans. If even a few.

I spent some time LARPing in The Realms, a New-England game. I enjoyed my time there mostly because of the combat system, which is location based and doesn't deal with hit points or weapon damage numbers; you get hit, you lose a limb/die, unless you're wearing armor (which provides, at most, two points of protection).
I typically fought with a two-handed weapon (about 5 feet, a comfortable fit for my 6'2" frame). I started with a massive claymore that I made as a newbie during a weapon-making workshop, and then upgraded to a much lighter (and better-made) spear. I was trying to learn dual-wielding and sword-and-board before I left.
Unfortunately, a lot of people in the game weren't into character. They'd show up wearing gym pants and wife-beaters, and conversations about sports scores were more common during climactic battles than anything in-character. So, I left.

My friend tried to get me into it when I was a teenager, but no... It just doesn't seem like my thing. I don't see the appeal. Dressing up as imaginary shit and going to the woods or something, that I can understand and would probably do it for just the hell of it if I had a costume and some people to join in, but pretending to be some person that isn't me and having some kind of improv theatre thing with a bunch of people who are probably a thousand times more into it than me (leaving me to be the buzzkill) just doesn't do it for me.

well if you are still interested in getting back in I can give you links to many different New Eangland LARPs.(Most of which are fairly strickt in roleplaying, an offhanded comment or two is fine, but byound that you gotta be in character)

I invested the energy I might use LARPing in Fencing instead. Honestly, it is hard enough to be myself that I don't care to try and pretend to be something else.
