So today, I drove my brother-in-law to and from his Lasik [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lasik] surgery. It went perfectly, he's resting now and just needs to wear sunglasses over the weekend and use some drops. After that, he will no longer need to wear glasses to see well.

I wear glasses myself, and have entertained the idea of having Lasik done. It would be awesome to not have to wear glasses again - they can often be inconvenient. At the same time, I wonder if the cost of the surgery (my bro-in-law's comes to about $4,000) and any risks would be worth it.

Have any of you guys had similar surgery done? Did it go well? Would you recommend it?

Someone in my Calc 2 class last semester had it done. No complications or anything. She had blood in her eye for a few days though, so I imagine she had to explain that a fair amount of times.

I'm not old enough to get it (or at least, my prescription hasn't stabilized), but I'm thinking about it. I have a pretty weak prescription, so I'm not supposed to read with my glasses on, and it's super annoying sometimes when I have to switch from reading to distance frequently.

My sister's boyfriend got it done, and he recommended it to me, I have glasses as well and will probably go for it as soon as I can afford it (why is it so frickin expensive?!?)

I'm thinking about it as I wear contacts almost every hour of the day. But as a recent university graduate without a job yet (thanks economy!) I've put the idea on the back burner for financial reasons.

Can't you just get multifocal glasses? It's standard issue when you visit an optometrist's store here. Those work for any distance.
I've only ever seen people who have trouble reading get those...as an alternative to bifocals.

My sister really wants this, she gets her contacts stuck in her eyes now and again and freaks out whenever it happens. She thinks she'll try and get it done in 2012, she has the money, just needs to get in and see the doctors and get the ok.

I've considered it, but I want to see what the 20-30 year results are. Also, I have a recurring virus in my eyes that cause fuzzy spots to appear and impair my vision. Happens every few years. Have been undiagnosed, first got it over 10 years ago. My thought is some weird virus you can contract in the deep south... but the furthest south I've ever been is Wisconsin and that was years before I ever had symptoms. Anyway.. not sure if that could cause issues with my own surgery.

Personally i wouldnt like to entertain the idea of it.. ill stick to my glasses and contact lenses! I did however know someone who had it done, and he had a really strong prescription but the surgery went fine with no problems.

I would love to have corrective eye surgery done to me, but I don't think that my family has enough money for that. I'm near-sighted so it's a pain to lose my glasses and have to walk around squinting to read things off the overhead projector in class.

I had lasik done back in June, and although the first month of post-surgery sucked pretty bad (dry eyes, no night vision) it's actually cleared up nicely, to the point that my eyes feel completely natural. I'm not sure I would suggest it to everyone (It was $4000 for me too) based on the price and the recovery period, but if you really hate glasses and contacts and are aware of the fact that a small percentage of eye correction surgeries have complications, then it's definitely worth considering.

I wear glasses and I personaly wouldn't consider it. A friend of my mum had it done around 10 years ago, it lasted around 2 years and then his eyes went back to normal so he wasted all that money. Things might have improved these days but I'm still reluctant. I don't think the technology has been around long enough to fully judge it effects.
