As much as I disrespect indie/hipster bands, my friends showed me Sigmund Droid.
Although I was skeptical at first, they grew on me with their awesome bass and drums.
Here's a link:

Not sure if it counts as a band, but I discovered it recently so...
Woo! Another Voltaire fan! Glad to see it!

On topic... The band I just recently started listening to is very obscure, so I'm more than happy to advertise them.

Edit: Maybe giving the name of the band would help... Pandora's Toy Box

Well the last band that I've 'discovered' I enjoy would be the British prog-rock (in their recent form anyways) band Anathema (by way of the album they released this year We're Here Because We're Here), but since I was essentially introduced to them by someone's intriguing description which was then followed up by a flat out statement to the effect of "You will love this band", it wasn't so much of a discovery as a recommendation.

I can't remember precisely which of the various bands I first encountered semi-recently was the 'last' one that I discovered, so I'm just going to toss out a quirky French progressive rock group that incorporates a full string quartet in the mix, Taal, whom I stumbled onto (without anyone prodding me to do so) a while ago; I've been meaning to share/inflict them upon a broader audience for sometime now and this gives me the perfect opportunity, heh.

I will be genuinely astonished if anyone else who posts in this thread had ever heard of them before.

So, being as into music as I am, I always find new music to listen to. The other night my roommie and I were playing video games and it was his turn to have the speakers (we alternate music). Much to my surprise, instead of listening to his usual metal, he put on this

I am now in love with Explosions in the Sky

I was curious as to what the Escapist is currently into, so perhaps post a video of the band, and their name and why you like it and all that.

Also sorry, hit post by accident so the initial post must look a bit funky.
That is pretty cool. Thanks.
My favorite will always be Tom Waits (love the pic by the way) but I saw this Kickstarter video on youtube and these guys could come close.

Periphery, who I'd heard about before they even released an album and just had a few songs on my space. I can now be one of those guys!

Recently? Porcupine Tree. It is amazing and I keep going back to their CDs.
Funniest story? I discovered an indy band at one of my house parties when someone warned me that a guy was peeing on the side of the house. He was the lead singer and gave me his latest CD as an apology. I accepted. Can't remember the name of the group for the life of me, but I remember their CD was horrible.

Fiend Without a Face.

It's country/rockabilly/surf music with a sweet 'Halloween on meth' vibe. It's got Brann Dailor, the amazing drummer of Mastodon, beating the skins here too.

And on the same day, I found:

Bad For Lazarus.

My interest came from the fact that Rich Fownes, the guitarist of one of my favourite bands-Eighties Matchbox B Line Disaster-sings with these guys. They're so raw they're bleeding all over the place. Which is, believe it or not, supposed to be a compliment.

Erm... I'd say probably Agalloch (post-metal/ambient with some folk elements thrown in) or Transcending Bizarre (avantegarde symphonic black metal, and yes it is utterly mental) were the last two bands I picked up recently

I think after playing Alan Wake, Poets of the Fall. I know they've been around for a while but I'm not exactly an avid listener of foreign rock. That being said, their stuff is awesome. Carnival of Rust and Roses are right up there on my iPhone!
