WRITING HABITS TO PREVENT CONFUSION!
All romaji Japanese will be italicized
All romaji will be spelled right and will use Japanese pronounciation. desu
All unitalicized romaji will be spelled for pronounciation. dess
The current week/lesson will be bolded, after I learn to link, I'll link to the post start.

LANGUAGE PLANNER
Week 1 = basics of reading and writing, learn Hiragana
Week 2 = use hiragana, start learning katakana (same way as hiragana), learn basic sentence
Week 3 = Verbs

When in Japan, I used google translate to attempt to talk to someone and...it doesnt work. DO NOT USE A TRANSLATOR, I'm serious. You'll say gibberish. My Japanese Aunt was like "What are you saying XD?" and I was like "... D:"

oh! Should I start a new thread each week or just say which page the next lesson starts on? we could get a 1000 page thread if everyone tried hard enough but that would be hard to sort through...

I'm learning spoken Japanese language, but written scares me. Hiragana, Romaji, Katakana, Kanji...it all scared me. This might convince me to bite the bullet on this one.

Thanks. I try to make a strong stance that anyone interested in Japan or Japanese aren't weeaboos...but its the internet so what are we gonna do.

Also I thought the people looking at this thread might also enjoy reading my experiences when I spent a month in Japan. http://nicholasjapan.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html The only reason I started this blog was for Japan, there may be some personal angst but thats just life in general.

I stayed there with my American Uncle who is in the US Navy, his Japanese wife, and their two children from April 30th (which turned into May 1st when I entered Japan) to April 3rd (which turned into April 2nd upon entering the USA). Amazingly enough, on the flight home, I left Japan at 6pm and arrived in the USA at 6pm.

i can understand basic kanji, but basic is all i can get.
you would think i would speek some japanese considering all the anime i watch in japanese.

Apart from these, just some kind of writing book so you can practice writing hiragana, katakana and kanji.

If you write in Japanese, I will respond back in Japanese and English, then correct your mistakes. Romaji is okay because not all computers can read Japanese characters.

Correction: it is oshie `ru` no ga ?³?¦?é??ª

oshie `ra` no ga, makes no sense

suisen `ga` dekinai- Try your best to remember your particles when typing in Japanese. You can drop them is speech but not in writing.

That being said, good job! All I got was a few bits and then I used google translate which said "Well, here ... I was a little bit better, but I'm not me the referee said it really is." Which I can roughly guess means, "Well... I'm a little bit better but I'm not the forum leader, so ...something something..."

I was actually trying for "Uh, I dunno about here...I don't think I could recommend teaching that here."

Granted, given the fact that this thread is almost at two pages with an overall very positive response proves that I was completely and laughably wrong.

That's cool that you can post in Japanese here, I'm using the IME thingy that's built into Vista and all it shows is ASCII.

its just that in my past experience, there have been people who say that they can speak some language and post a phrase in that language with the text also in that language, and they turn out to just be trying to impress the other people when they actually used translators

What does that mean, exactly? I have a vague idea of it, just not sure. I can read and understand most averagely used kanji(Well, since its somewhat similar to mandarin, harr.) and hiragana but not really understand it.

Actually 電腦 is Chinese for computer only. This is because the Chinese have no alphabet so if you don't know a character, you gotta look up radicals and all this hard stuff. He also was polite enough to omit all Kanji. When I said I could read, I meant literally read, not understand. When I went to Japan, I'd read stuff to my 5 year old nephew and he'd translate XD

While Japan did steal characters from China to simplify their writing, they do not translate perfectly. My friend is learning Mandarin so we compare that stuff a lot.

I have no idea, I can speak fluently in mandarin(&#21488;&#28286;&#29983;&#30340;&#21862;&#65374;&#22247, family also speaks fluently in japanese(Which they tried to cram into my thorium-made brain in near futility).&#12288;So I have a pretty clear image of the difference in the words(I have a book for it too.&#12494;_<&#12290

It looked alot like Japanese "Evolved" from older versions of Chinese dialect instead of "stealing", though. And I saw &#38651;&#33075;/&#33126; on some packaging of some G**damlikemodelinsomeunspecifiedshopnearthepurpleicecreamstandin&#21271;&#28023;&#36947;butallthatisirrevelant.
It just seems somewhat silly to just directly use K-ONPEWTAH!instead of borrowing &#38651;&#33075;/&#33126;, which feels alot more consistant. Reminds me of "HA-MMHBAGA!" that I always will make fun of.

Bah, s'all right. Didn't mean to sound too upset. I just try not to use online translators for any language I speak (feels like cheating) or don't speak (is cheating).
