... what is that? Christ... and I thought the designs in Platinum were starting to decline. I'm kinda glad I decided to avoid Black&White now. I mean, I don't care about the competitive side of Pokemon and they hardly ever change the single-player, so I guess the series just doesn't have any appeal for me anymore.
In Generation 5's defense, Tympole is probably one of the worst. There's maybe 4 or 5 other Pokemon families in the game that are just as bad, but the rest of the Pokemon are fairly ace.

OT:
Miltank has all of my hatred, because of how stupid Whitney's is.

EDIT: On reflection, Girafarig isn't really all that bad.

Well, I was... exaggerating a little? I was never very excited for Generation V in the first place, I see people talking about the Gen V Pokemon and just get confused because the names look like random mashings of letters. Even more-so than they used to be, at least.
I don't think that's very fair at all, regarding the technology at the time.
Fair enough, I mean, I didn't think anything of them when my five-year old self was playing the games, so looking back now is a little bit unfair. Doesn't mean they've aged well, though.

Not trying to change your mind or anything, but I do hope you'll trust me when I say not all of the Gen 5 Pokemon are anywhere near as bad as Tympole. Quite a few like Volcarona, Krookodile and Galvantula look pretty cool (although these are just my opinion, you might actually hate them)

Ah, I feel exactly the same as you do, being a fan of Gen I-III, I seriously lost all interest in Pokemon when Gen IV happened. It's just... bleh. Gone are the days I'd spend hours exploring the cities of Kanto or moving through forests in Johto.
Anyways, I always thought Magmar, Exeggcute and Gloom looked very fucked up. I dunno, it just pisses me off when I see them.
It's not so much bad as it is just really boring. I mean, it's just a turtle with cannons strapped to its back. That's the kind of lazy design I'd expect from a Digimon, but I guess I can be thankful that it's not as over-designed as most Digimon. At least it's still relatively simple.
Dunsparce is based on a Japanese cryptozoological creature called the "Tsuchinoko," which is described as being a blunt, fat snake capable of jumping. It's sort of like the Japanese answer to the jackalope.
It's also adorable. How could you possibly hate that derpy little face? D:
Wow, this was certainly the active thread to post in.

Oh, I'm sure I'd be able to find ones that I like in Gen V, Zoroark was pretty interesting to me, for example. But overall it all just seems... underwhelming, ever since the move to the DS. I don't really think the designs are terrible so much as garish and over-blown. I'd like to complain about the names too, but I really can't because for the most part they've always been ridiculous. "Lickitung"? Ugh.

I got Platinum when it came out, and I jumped right on HeartGold because Gen II was my favorite, but I just can't get excited for the franchise anymore. I honestly think the only thing that would really grab my attention is Nintendo finally making a high-budget, full-3D Pokemon game that included all (or most) of the regions and Pokemon that have been released so far. It would be a ***** to balance, but it would be so glorious.

If that were true, I'd seriously consider buying whatever new platform Nintendo makes just for that game. They can leave out the Sinnoh and Unova regions though.
Can't say I'm a big fan of Mr. Mime or Jynx myself. Although for the most part I'm very tolerable with Pokemon designs. In fact I actually like a lot of Gen. 5's designs despite the hate towards them.

I think that a majority of Generation 5's designs are really good. Maybe not as memorable as say, Snorlax or Charizard or something. But most are good.

Unown. Sure they got an interest look due to them repersent each of the alphabet but that it. They only got the attack Hidden Power and the stats are no where near useful for anyone using one as his/ her party unless that person is playing hard mode on him/ herself.
Hidden power is good for up to 70 base damage and can be any type. The right ev/iv, modest natures and a pile of choice specs should make it playable in-game. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much effort, but playable.
As stupid as it's design is... I love Tangela. And it's evolution, Tangrowth. I just find it adorable personally, I also loved how Tangrowth has gotten a pretty decent place in the 'meta' circuit. I'm a huge fan of grass type and it's good to know my favorite doesn't just have all the cards stacked against it right off the bat.
OT: Honestly I never cared for the designs of Spearow and it's evolution. They just seemed... Plain. I know they don't have to be 'OMG, SUPER AMAZING DETAIL AND COLOR' but something of it's design just kinda reeks of laziness for me.
But overall I do like the designs, if only on a level of a neat use of inspiration. Like Maractus actually being a visual-pun of a reference to the real-life Bunny-Eared cactus.
