Whitney is pretty rough; I didn't have any problems with Morty because I'd bred an Espeon (from Pearl) with Shadow Ball that just tore through him.

Roark in DPPt was pretty hard if you picked Chimchar to start, because the only other Pokemon you'd catch all had Normal-type moves, and Rock Smash is mediocre at best. His Cranidos was pretty beastly considering he was the FIRST gym leader in the game. On the other hand, if you have Chimchar up to Monferno, it'll know Mach Punch which makes his gym cake.

Honorable mention goes to Jasmine. If you don't have a good Fire-type (like you missed catching Vulpix/Growlithe) her Steelix will DOMINATE you.

If we're counting E4/Champions, though, the one I've always had the most trouble with was Cynthia. If you don't have a good ice attacker her Garchomp will slaughter you and her Milotic is obscenely tanky.
Cynthia. Her team was better built than Steven's or Gary's. The champion from hell.
If Speed didn't have that bit of random chance to it, my Torterra would've never gotten that truly epic final Rock Smash on her Lucario...and people said Gen 4 was easy?

Yeah I'll go with Claire, assuming she's the dragon gym leader. I think that's the one I'm on right now on my replay of Pokemon Gold (the original). I trained a Swinub up really high to a Piloswine. I finally beat her dragons. Then she pops out a fucking Seadra that uses Surf and kills my Piloswine in one hit, and all my other Pokemon, too. Ugh!

I'm strange, I never have problems with gym leaders, but because of this I'm always horribly underleveled when I reach the elite 4. The funny thing is that I have no problems beating them with a team of 40's, but it's when I hit Lance that I get stomped. It's always his Gyarados and Aerodactyl that get me (I surprisingly never picked up any pokemon to deal with either water or flying, so they kinda destroy my team a bit), and I usually ended up killing them with my Kadabra (no friends have Heart Gold, or Soul Silver, so I can't get Alakazam), and even that was a gamble.

Only reason I ever beat lance was my Typhlosion learned Rollout, and I got the world's luckiest Rollout combo going, took out all three of his Dragonites, and his Charizard with none of my pokemon being above level 42. I still feel like I didn't deserve that win, because it was 100% luck.

I really didn't have trouble with any gym, I started training a team to take on the gym's and the E4 from the very beginning.

I actually beat the dragon gym using only a Ditto. Since I took their dragon type moves it wasn't too difficult.

i had trouble with brock in yellow, but all i'd really do is catch a male nidoran and level him to lvl 14 or so when he'd learn double kick. and i ALWAYS have had trouble with blaine, no matter what game. he was followed closely by giovanni in yellow.

I always hated Brock because I loved picking the fire type and it made fighting him and his gym members very difficult
Why didn't you catch a Pidgey?
Rock against flying type? That's why

I'm pretty sure Rock is weak against flying types... Wing Attack is how I got the Coal Badge in Diamond.
EDIT: Terribly Sorry... I have a poor memory... I remember now I got the Coal Badge using Psyduck, because I was proving to a friend that Psyduck was an awesome Pokemon.

Anyway Charmander is dubbed hard mode - or useless mode, because it's only good against The Celadon City Gym, which by that time you have an Eevee anyway. So try catching an Grass pokemon or something while you're in Viridian City / Forest

I always got destroyed by Lt. Surge. I just never had anything that could deal with him, and I always started with squirtle.

Jasmine's Steelix? Get a Tentacruel. Tentacruel + Surf = complete Steelix rape. Massive sp atk combines with Steelix's humiliating sp def, super effective damage and bang.
My most hated gym leader is Clair. You absolutely ruin her with enough ice moves to cause a new ice age, and she, in her eternal dragon-training wisdom, decides that you don't deserve it. Bullshit! Where does that leave her?

Did you use a lv100 Pidgeot?
Rock destroys flying, I'm afraid. It's Ground that Flying's good against.

EDIT: just saw your edit. Sorry!

Well I personally don't have a prejudice against the gym leaders, but the hardest for me probably still stands at the double battle with Liz and tate. Probably the only gym that I ever lost more than once to, and even losing once rarely happens with me.

Whitney, Tate & Liza, Wattson, and the Elite Four from DPPt easily (especially Aaron. Damn that Drapion and Vespiquen). Juan as well, but he's not as bad as the others (stupid Wailord).

Morty was a bastard the first time I faced him in SS. I'd kill his Gastly no problem, but then he would send out Gengar. 6 Shadow Balls, 6 OHKO's, my entire team dead. I was so pissed.
^This: I hate grinding levels since I'm used to wiping the floor with my opponent, but my murkrow gets instant K/O'ed by his 'BS not very effective-critical hits with shadow ball'... Well maybe 8th times a charm neh?

But as for the most overpowered, I'd have to go with Cynthia... She's scary... *shiver* That's the only one I will grind to fight against.

I don't really have problems with gym leaders on regular playthroughs. I tend to power-game and overgrind.

However.

On Nuzlocke runs, Winona for her Altaria and Liz&Tate of Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald.

Altaria has killed one of my Pokemon every single time I've fought the bastard. It always *just* survives my ice attack and lands a crit killing blow as revenge.

Liz&Tate are extremely dangerous on Nuzlocke runs, because if both Lunatone and Solrock focus fire on one of your Pokemon, it could easily die before you get a chance to heal or switch it.
