Gordon Freeman, yea....I went there. One of the most uncompelling and dull characters I have ever had the misfortune of playing. He's not cool, he's not a good protagonist, and just a floating camera that shoots a wields a crowbar. No more interesting than the majority of FPS heroes.
exactly!

truer facts have never been posted.

Loyld from Tales of Symphonia.

He's an idiot. Everyone knows that he is an idiot. Yet for some reason, he is always the one that comes up with the group's plans. Retarded plans that almost always result in someone getting kidnapped or killed. I just want to reach into the TV and strangle him for being so fucking stupid. A brick would be more useful than him. At least a brick wouldn't lead you into danger and preach about the power of friendship.
You're allowed to hate who you hate, I'm not arguing with you there, man. But, in Japan idiot-heroes are a big thing. I'm not saying he's not pants-on-head retarded, I'm just saying it makes sense if you know where it comes from.

...You know, he wears red... doesn't that make him brick-colored, at least? =D

He's a very weird character.

"My reality is mine alone."
???

"I won't sleep well tonight"
Oh, grow up you big sissy.

"I'll live you're life for you"
Now seriously, what the fuck?

Ironically, he is the best character in Dissidia: Final Fantasy, but he has the worst quotes.

There is just such a long list:

The guy from Prey, because he swears and acts like a mentally retarded tool with less planning ability than the wrench he carries around. But he does suffer for his lack of planning.

Alex Mercer, but then he gets what he deserves when he
finds out that he is really dead and that he was responsible for everything including his own death

The main character from Bioshock because he is bland and more or less a mindless slave.

Altair is far too smug as well, and if you couldn't see the consequence of the first mission coming then you
deserve to be stabbed with a poison blade as well

Also the silent protagonist from Timeshift for being a military idiot (as befits his implied background I suppose), and taking the hard way when he has a time-traveling suit and other people have saved the world before with just an ocarina.

This is a key reason I prefer games where you create the personality for your character yourself.

This is nothing against the game but Kratos is the biggest, most miserable tosser in the history of videogames. Other than sheer brutality he has absolutely no redeeming features.

Gordon Freeman isn't really that great. He's a mute and we're supposed to take the other's words that's somekind of great man.

EDIT: I'll also had Simon Belmont. Sheesh, the guy wears a skirt and he gets hurt by bats, birds and frogs...

Really, i could just list every protagonist from every Square/Enix rpg game i've ever played and everyone on that list would be an equally valid answer. Not saying i hate their games, its just their protagonists are weak, whiney girly boys. Its always been about the supporting cast in those games for me.

He could easily be replaced with... Say, a Labrador retriever?
I actually hated him more or less because he was a psychotic animal murderer. He killed my pet Raptor!!!

On topic: I hate Dante with a passion, I also seriously hated John Forge from Halo Wars. Like I hated how he was so racist to the aliens ("Let's settle this man to FREAK!" yes John the Arbiter probably think you are a freak too) I hated his general attitude and frankly I was glad to see him sacrifice himself because at least then he did at least one justafiable thing. Although it was kind of cool when he managed to kill the evil Arbiter I still just did not like him.

Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile. What bugs me is that she wants it both ways. She pretends to be this powerful, uber bad ass woman that only care about her job and nothing else. Then later on, when she remember that who she was before she became a valkyrie, she goes all hysterical crying girl. I know that I was supposed to feel for her, but I got pissed off at her when I was playing that game.

Tidus did not leave much of an impression on me. I could also say the same about most Final Fantasy main characters. Except Cecil, he was the sh-t. They almost seemed interchangeable. The only main characters that I kind of liked were Terra, Celes, Locke, Tifa, Rinoa, Garnet/Dagger, Yuna, and Balthier. They were just as bland as the respective main characters, but they managed to leave an impression on me.

Right now, I am playing Viking: Battle for Asgard and Skarin is not leaving much of an impression on me. The world around him is a lot more interesting than that over developed football hooligan. I could also say the same thing about all the main characters that got inspiration from 90's comic books. When playing these characters, I kept thinking, "good lord, even the Punisher showed emotions every once in a while."

Oh man, it's between Squall, Tidus, and Vaan.

I'm going to go with Tidus, because Vaan is kind of pushed aside in the majority of the plot and Squall's hair and clothing aren't completely retarded. And the whole fucking game in FFX is about how awesome Tidus is supposed to be. TIDUS SUCKS CAMEL COCK.

For newer games, I'd go with Capell in Infinite Undiscovery. I was able to play through a whole 5 minutes of that kid's whining idiocy before returning it to the store as quickly as I could.

As for non JRPG characters...Lara Croft. What does she DO? Steal vast riches from historical sites and hide them in her mansion? Try to shoot her butler (she did when I played, anyway)? Have boobs?

Also Link. I hate link. Stupid outfit, useless if not at full health, most annoying voice ever recorded, and won't just fuck off and give up on the dumb bimbo.

I also have a lot of Old School hate for Arthur from Ghosts N' Goblins for obvious fucking reasons. I hate your beard and your face!

I feel so much better now, thank you OP.

Thank you for showing me that I'm not the only one who despise that character.

Thought the biggest problem with him isn't his reckless endangering of all other characters in the game, the biggest problem is how everyone think he's fucking Jesus, despite the idiot leading them into impending death over and over again.

It's quite a downer that Lloyd is the main protagonist of Tales of Symphonia, really, because, gods, I love that game.

I think pretty much all the characters from Tales of Symphonia were idiots. Its interesting especially when Tales of Vesperia had such strong characters (I think they're part of the same series...right?)

Oh I forgot to mention - any silent protagonist in any game ever. Gordon Freeman, Chrono, et all. In any game that purports to have any kind of story, having the main character never speak a line (not even dialogue options) is inexcusable. Imagine that kind of thing in any other medium. It's retarded and an excuse to only have to write half a story.
