I actually thought Tidus wasn't all that bad, at least later on in the game anyway, but I do agree that Vaan can be a pain in the ass.

I hate every single character in Star ocean: the last hope. Every single one was a stereotype. Edge being by far one of the worst main characters I have ever seen.

Nero in DMC4.
Raiden from MGS2 (MGS4 was a redeeming light for him, he had cool ninja skills even if he did look like a furbee with no fur)
Every character I ever make in Oblivion; They always turn out batshit ugly.
Every character in FF. Never played a single one of them but I know I hate everyone in them.

In line with the OP's description, despite me absolutly loving MGS3, I couldn't help but laugh and smile when Snake got his ass handed to him by Volgen (sp?). I do like Snake though.

Bayonetta. Haven't played the game yet but I just KNOW I hate her more than every other game protagonist ever concieved.

The Fable 2 protagonish 'hero'. Even if you max out all stats and have zero fat rating you still look like a walking, farting, beer gut.

Probably Zhang He in Dynasty warriors, I hate him so much.

Lord of the Dance indeed. He has the worst and most hilarious ending in DW5 though.

Every Devil May Cry protagonist ever.

Pro-tip, developers; if the main character's only response to a 50-metre tall demon appearing is to smugly flick his hair back, the player is going to experience that same sense of apathy.

Unfortunately, since Dante and co. are such overpowered gits, you rarely ever get to see them get their long overdue comeuppances, either.

Christ knows, I'd like to see Nero try and pull an unimpressed expression while a re-animated scarecrow was carving his face with a scythe.

Altair has been on my list for a while. I don't know if he's actually my least favourite protagonist of all time, but he's the one who's gotten on my nerves the most recently. If I rummaged through my old games, I'm sure it would trigger a memory of someone I dislike more, but Altair was the first one to pop into my head.

I didn't like Vaan & Penelo. The game kept try to force these two into the mix all the while it was getting more and more clear that the story was about Ashe and Basch, with Fran and Balthier thrown in to round out the group.

Vaan was FF12's Tidus, with the exception that Tidus was plot relavant. Both were the player's avatar to act as the 'new guy' to an otherwise unfamiliar world. Most main series FFs don't do this, and instead the player is thrown in and moved along by the group. 10 mixed it up but it worked because Tidus was new to the world and had just as much info about Spira as the player. So even if FFX was actually Yuna's story, Tidus was well enough developed that he never felt out of place with the story.

Vaan on the other hand didn't do anything, but was presented in a similar avatar sorta way. He was meant to be the player, but unlike Tidus he always felt out of place. His main character trait was that he wanted adventure because he was tired of his home country's oppression by a foreign power. Problem with that is we've already got two native Rabinastre who want to end the oppression (one being the princess), as well as our "only seeking adventure" duo. You might say that Vaan was a link between the two, but I think Balthier would have followed Basch and Ashe for the hope of reward at first. Afterwards his story would continue on like normal, eventually helping not just for reward but because he actually wants to see an end to the conflict. Just like the character he was based on, Han Solo.

Penelo then adds even more uselessness by being Vaan's love interest. With no Vaan, Penelo has no point and can be dropped well. This would leave room for plot relevant people like Larsa to join up permanently instead of just as a guest.

I just find it ironic that everyone complains about the stereotypical angsty JRPG character, then when they finally get the opposite of their complaints they hate him. Come on people, show some consistency.

And for your information, FFX happens to be one of the more popular Final Fantasy games, at least in America. And it wasn't until I played it just a few months ago that I realized why.

Final Fantasy X tells a much more personal story than most of the other games in the series. It achieves the epicness expected from Final Fantasy, but it is not the focus: rather, the story is all about the characters, their interactions with each other, their feelings toward each other as affected by their loyalties and their past. It was all about that, a summoner and her guardians. This made the game quite different from most I've played, and made for an incredibly emotional story with deep characters and dynamic relationships.

Also, the battle system is my personal favorite of the FF games I've played (I like the true turn-based rather than the time-based system, and they did a great job of assigning each character a specific role in battle). The soundtrack was not FFVII or FFVI status, but was really good (To Zanarkand is the most beautiful piano song ever). The optional sidequests at the end were actually fun, and there was plenty to do.

You may not like it, however that can happen, but you have to at least recognize that it's your opinion. There are many acceptable answers besides your snide example.
Popularity does not = good. By that logic Twilight is a masterful piece of cinema, The Jonas Brothers are one of the best bands ever, and Dr. Phil should run for President. Yeah, FFX sold well but that doesn't make it universally 'good' - and certainly not in terms of its story.

And yeah, it's just an opinion and we're all entitled to our own. But I don't think that's any reason to halt all discussion about our opinions. Discussing why we feel the way that we do is half of the fun of any discussion. I'd hate to live in a world full of conversations that went like:

"I think it's good."
"I think it's bad."
"We disagree."
"Let's never discuss it again."
"Agreed, we will only ever talk about things we agree on."

Anyway...

The things you describe liking best about FFX are the things it does exactly the same as every FF release before, and I'd say FFX does them the worst. The focus in FF story telling has always been on the characters and their interaction, rather than on the 'big picture' to go and save the world. At the end of FF6 each character recounts their own personal reasons behind being there at the final battle, and the game's story is all about the relationships that form in the face of the crisis more than about the crisis itself. You know that Locke loves Celes, but the game never seriously shows their relationship. You get behind the character's motivations through their actions and the subtext in the dialogue.

In FFX its in your face. Nothing is written in subtext and nothing is between the lines. All the characters blatantly tell you exactly what they feel and exactly what their motivations are. I think this was partly because Square was playing with their new voiceover toy and over-wrote the whole thing. Most of the characters in the game are representatives of a one phrase stereotype, and if you know your Japanese stock characters its absolutely insulting. There's the 'Magical Girl', the 'Old Samurai', the 'Cheery Youngster', etc. Almost half of the dialogue can be drawn from these descriptions, and reading them you basically get everything the game has to tell you about the characters.

Honestly I never considered someone saying they 'prefer' FFX's battle system, as its exactly the same as every other turn-based JRPG created. I guess this would make sense if you played FFXII first and then went back and decided you liked the old-school way better.

Anyway one day I'll go back and replay the whole banal adventure and describe in detail why it sucks and you suck for liking it (Spoony reference, don't go taking that seriously I'm sure you're just a wonderful person with terrible taste :p)

In any case I feel this is still on topic as Tidus is the clear 'favorite' in this little questionnaire.

Oh also, as I've said many times before - Cloud from FFVII is not a whiny emo bastard. Cloud from Advent Children, however, is. Fuck Cloud from Advent Children, he ruined Cloud for me.
I didn't mean to say that popular = good, I was simply stating that I'm not alone in my love for FFX. I should have specified that more, I suppose: because you're right, quality and popularity are completely independent of each other.

Admittedly, I haven't finished VI yet, so I can't compare, but from what I've played so far I could see it comparing on the personal level.

And true, in the characters' most absolutely stripped-down, basic, incomplete forms, they all fulfill stereotypical roles. But their roles as individuals wasn't what made them great, it was their roles in reference to those around them. The most obvious example is the relationship between the summoner and her guardians. All the characters would have been very different had Yuna's safety not been their primary, shared interest. And Rikku's involvement in the Al Bhed attempts to "rescue" the summoners to save Yuna was another level to this relationship (which also affected Wakka due to his Al Bhed prejudice). Even Kihmari, a decently flat character on his own, was made more interesting due to his connection with the other characters. The dynamic between the characters worked much better than any of the FF games I've yet played.

As for the battle system, there was one key difference. It was still turn-based, but it wasn't the active-time battle system. In the ATB, your character can go when the time bar fills up, and it works the same for your enemies. In the FFX battle system, it was truly turn-based: everyone had an order of turns that you could see in the upper right corner, and everyone went in that order, never changing unless a certain action changed things up a bit (like Haste, Slow, etc.). I liked this because it allowed you to really strategize and thoughtfully plan your next move, and with the varied roles that each character played, it worked very well.

And yes, I think this is still on topic. Though it might belong more in the thread specifically about Tidus from a few days back...

Also, you're right about Cloud. He was very different in Advent Children, and I didn't like his character as much. But then I watched it in Japenese, with English subs (and thus an endlessly better translation) and realy got the scope of the story, and, as much as we all have the Advent Children Cloud, it makes sense. His character progression between FFVII and Advent Children is a logical one, and I can see why he changes in the ways he does. As much as none of us liked his character, I hate to admit it, but it was good storytelling: it just makes sense.

See though, now I've probably started another debate. But whatever, I like these. :D

Freeman. He is the biggest non-character ever. Everyone acts like he is the greatest character ever, because he is a nerdy non-character that they can project themselves onto. You never receive any in game evidence that he is anything more than a floating hand.
Which is exactly why he kicks ass. He may not be the greatest character evahr, but he is as great as you want him to be, and the rest of the game world doesn't disillusion you one bit.

I would say.... Possibly James Sunderland fom Silent Hill 2.
I find his emoness rather annoying, but I don't dislike him that much.

I dunno I usually like the main characters for one reason or another!
Same here.

Though I will admit that Sora from Kingdom Hearts can be a little friggin stupid. "Do you want a hint?" *pause* "Nope." That slightly pissed me off.

Who can forget Mar-I mean, nothing. Nothing at all.

For the love of God (who seems to be getting owned in your avatar), this. Think Master Chief is overrated? Please refer to Dr. Freeman.

Wow, a lot of hate for Tidus. As a character, he really didn't bother me much, you just had to get past his awful voice actor.

Also, I despised Tommy from Prey. He was so stupid.

Capell from Infinite Undiscovery takes the cake for me. I don't wanna play as the whiny ass pansy that wants to run away all the time. For those saying Tidus and Squall at least they WANTED to fight. Capell was just useless. I wanted him to die so I could play as Sigmund instead......

I wouldn't say he's my least favorite protagonist, but Altair definitely wins for pissing me off more than any other character ever. Why? Because of his arrogance and willingness to defy the player when they're trying to move somewhere, and then he decides to either go in the opposite direction or not move at all. "WTF Altair, I said jump to the next roof, not jump down to the guard and assassinate him in front of his drinking buddies you jerk."
Still, I think Faith (Mirror's Edge) is my least favorite protagonist, because there really is nothing to like about her.

Cloud should have died, not Zack as he would have made a much better protagonist
