Pretty much anyone who plays with the idiot ball so much they should be put down like Lenny or anyone who's supposed to come off like a tough badass but is virtually unlikeable. Lara Croft and Serge from Chrono Cross thus come to mind. Alex Mercer, yeah, even his superpowers can't save him from being about as likeable as the Hitler-Stalin lovechild.

My vote goes to Dante. The combination of his irritating voice and exceedingly cheesy lines just annoy the hell out of me.

All the male characters from Final Fantasy that looked a little too much like a girl....so yea mostly all of them.
Even Cecil? He may have looked a bit girly when he became a paladin, but he was still a great character.

Anyone played The Witcher?

Also, i'm noticing a trend for FPS characters to be shallow, meaningless shells. Gordon Freeman, Master Chief, whatever you are in FEAR, etc.

This might be a bit contraversial, but... anyone find that when you met JC Denton in Deus Ex 2 it completely ruined any 'coolness' you envisaged for your character in the first one?
You take that back about Freeman, just hate Master Chef even more (DELIBERATE TYPO). I can't hate Gordon, perhaps because I grew upto playing Half Life 1, but still, Gordon's like a god to me =o And Master Chiefs his *****.

Squall from Final Fantasy VIII... Damn is he annoying. He could have got Quistis in the beginning of the game. She's only like a year older than him.
Other than that, he's just too serious and sometimes just downright stupid.

Wow, so much hate for FF. The bandwagon is strong in this thread...

Also, I'm a bit curious as to why so much hate for Gordon Freeman. Ok, fair enough he isn't the great hero everyone claims he is (and I don't think he should have one that Gamespot hero poll) but how is he a 'bad person' I mean, he never shouts/swears at people, he's never mean to people and all he tries to do is save peoples lives. Yet so much hate for the Free-man!
I suppose that everyone who likes FF characters are also jumping a bandwagon, although a different one, since there's definitely also a lot who likes FF characters. That is unless you want to claim that people who hates FF characters are jumping the bandwagon while people who likes FF characters are thinking independently.

Anyway, don't confuse bad person and bad character. Someone who in real life would be a good person could make a bad character and someone who would be a bad person can make a good character. I have seen this sort of topic in many different forums and in no way or shape is it so that characters with good personalities gets all the love while characters with bad personalities gets all the hate.

Your god is a mute :p
Hell, I grew up playing Half Life too, and I rate it very highly, but, you can't be suggesting that he'd win any awards for his charisma?

Nero from devil may cry 4 i mean wtf a emo who looks almost the same as dante
Solid snake ok to all the fans i like him a little but cmon he is too old for this shit leave it to raiden then he goes for his retirement
kratos i can not have any sympathy with that man he is brutal then...... nothing it is the only thing he can do (okay it works for his game) but he has no emotions at all

conclusion:characters with too many or none emotions at all suck

I would say.... Possibly James Sunderland fom Silent Hill 2.
I find his emoness rather annoying, but I don't dislike him that much.

I dunno I usually like the main characters for one reason or another!
To be fair, I think the fact that James is in a town influenced by his mind to make him suffer makes the emo work out alright. It sort of fits.

Now...Squall from FF8. HE is an emo twat that should die in a Fire (and then a Fira, a Firaga, and then FIAGRA!, the logical conclusion to fire and viagra!) Virtually everything he says is garbage (including when he doesn't speak at all). This may be because the characters surrounding him are crap too, but we won't forgive him for that! His weapon sucks, his job sucks, his reactions to ANYTHING sucks, and I can't think of any reason for why Square thought THIS was a good character!
Is Fiagra anything like viagra? =p

Emil from Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. I don't think I have ever disliked a character from the very beginning as much as him. I mean, there's being a tool and a coward, but then there's Emil. It's ridiculous just how much of a pussy he is at the beginning of the game.

Yeah, he grows up and becomes more of a man as the game goes on, but he's so pathetic! Just Google a cutscence and you'll know what I mean!

Just what I was thinking.

Most jrpg protagonists count. Too many daft, irritating kids. Jrpgs would be my favourite genre by now if they could get better heroes.

For me, most of the blond leads from Final fantasy I didn't like, normally I waited for the 2nd character, which is never too far from the beginning, to show up.

aka Vincent(longest)(FF7), Blank, Vivi, Freya Amarant (FF9), Auron (FF10), and Basch (FF12) <---the chars that I liked to tolerate the blonds.

And I couldn't get far into FF8

after Final Fantasy...yeah, i wanted to kick Ruby off one of the FRICKING cars that she jumped onto.

It's fire ON viagra. (Sorry, when I first came upon the new spell categories, the first thing that came to mind was Fiagra, a gigantic never-ending blast of fire.)

Master Chief. One of the most overrated beings that was ever created.
I don't know... it's not like Master Chief really has a personality to dislike in the first place.
I don't think I agree with that, after all, with all of the stuff that John has been through, up, until and during the Halo games, he and the rest of the Spartans were pretty much objective driven when it came to interacting with marines and suchlike, a big part of that being that the only marine that was really chiefs "friend" was Sgt Johnson, therefore being the one we see him talking with the most, otherwise it tends to be simply getting the job done that occupies the Chief during the missions, this is generally true of most highly experienced military personell (I know a few), and I daresay even more true in people who have undergone excruciatingly painful and life altering procedures from an early age.
Spartans often only show character around other Spartans, seeing as they are the only ones who can truly relate to what they had been through, with the exception of Fajhad, but he was crippled in the augmentation anyway so he doesn't exactly have the experience of the other soldiers.

Back on topic my vote goes to Raiden of MGS 2, as he was very annoying and completely impossible to relate to as a character.

the problem is that he doesn't realy qualify for this thread because bungie think he is "too cool" to get beaten up in a cutscene...
he does suck though

in all honesty if he wasnt around there wouldn't be this idea that all FPS guys are power armoured robots with no emotion

I wasn't too fond of Zidane from FFIX. Something about a character that's obsessively girlcrazy and falls in love with the female lead at first sight rubs me the wrong way. They just kinda shoehorn that romance in there, don't they?
