Legacy of Kain Spin-off Nosgoth Canceled

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1310/1310354.png

In a post today, it was announced that Nosgoth has been canceled.

The cancellation of Legacy of Kain spin-off Nosgoth was announced today [http://forums.eu.square-enix.com/showthread.php?t=188531&p=2209050#post2209050]. The game will remain available through the end of May, at which time the game will be taken offline permanently. According to the post, anyone who has spent real money in the store since March 1 will receive a refund.

The post states that, while those working on the game "have dedicated a huge portion of themselves to making Nosgoth bigger and better over the years," that the audience "hasn't grown enough to sustain ongoing operations."

"It is with a heavy heart and an immense sense of sadness that we must announce the end of Nosgoth's development," the post reads. "Servers will continue to run until 31st May 2016, during which time you will be able to play the game as normal. After that date, Nosgoth will be taken offline for the last time."

"This was not an easy decision to come to. It has been a pleasure to build this game with your help, but ultimately its audience hasn't grown enough to sustain ongoing operations."

"On behalf of the entire Nosgoth team we want to thank you all for your feedback, support and dedication to the game throughout Nosgoth's life."

Nosgoth entered Early Access on Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/app/200110/] in January 2015.

I kinda saw that coming. I followed it a bit during its development, and it never really hooked me. Just seemed like another team based shooter in a huge field of them, even if it was vamps vs humans. Kind of a bummer, as I like seeing things done with the IP, but maybe they will get back to a single-player game set in Nosgoth.

Kind of a shame. It seemed enjoyable from what little I played of it... just needed more polish.

At the same time, it wasn't exactly the Legacy of Kain successor anyone wanted. Even though they were smart enough not to market it that way, I guess it just didn't stick.

Shame, I gave this a try a few months ago and found it allright'. Of course the concept of a team of shooty (for the most part) humans vs non human monsters isn't really original anymore but the legacy of khain dressing made for some nice visuals and for us LoK fanbois and fangrrls it gave us a little look at the period of nosgoths history between Khaine's conquest and subjugation of the humans and Raziel being reborn for the Soul Reaver games.

I liked playing it during a free weekend, unfortunately it really was doomed to start. You just can't release a niche game in this day and age with that requires grinding for unlocks. Everyone out there is competing for players' time, if you're selling a multiplayer only game that isn't going to pull in CoD or Battlefield numbers, then you need to stop copying their grindy systems.

I honestly think this would've attracted more people if you could just jump in and player whichever class you wanted with all the unlocks. But no, gotta extend that barebones content by having players grind them levels.

You mean the multiplayer spin off that no one really wanted to the story rich Legacy of Kain series didn't attract and hold a large player base?

Shocking.

I don't know if cancelled is the right word for it but sad news nonetheless. Had they made it a little less grindy, it may have been good for a while longer.

Yep, it's almost like the executives who green light what games get development time/money aren't even gamers.

Sux 2 sell your souls to investors, Square Enix.

The game was fun. Not enough to deserve survival, but it was more asymmetrical and honest than Evolve but that crap's still around.

Edit: Escapist seems to have lost my avatar image. Screw you too.

But can't you see, guys? They HAD to go the MMO route! It's what the gods of the free market have decreed for all to hear! Look at the likes of Blizzard and Riot Games - they did it, therefore being successful by moving in the same direction should have been a given! Think about it, what these developers did was the only sane and logical thing to do regarding a stale old IP like Legacy of Kain. And really, we can't fault them for some freak accident going against the proven nature of the universe.

Look at the bright side, which is bright from all sides, whatever lore the game had is now non-existent. I speak as a fan of the series, I love it and I love this news. The series has been spared a black mark upon it, a mark that sadly a series I also love, Thief, couldn't escape from.

Believe me whatever lore it had would absolutely, unquestionably pale in comparison to its predecessors. It's not even a question that the new lore would be shit, the team(s) that made the Legacy Of Kain series what it is had actual excellent writers on their teams.

Whatever lore writers the Nosgoth team had they could NEVER make a great Legacy Of Kain game in a million years, if they even cared about the lore and story (they don't, otherwise they wouldn't make a multiplayer game of a series that is renowned for having one of the best story in the games industry ever) they would probably bring in a Hollywood type writer and those people are a bunch of overrated hacks.

Developers today have no respect for any (old) games, they don't care about the lore, they don't care about the story, they don't give a shit about anything that old games stood for, their style and especially their spirit. Thief in my mind is the perfect example of the problems the game industry has today, those problems could be mostly summarized as developers not giving a single shit.

We could blame publishers for this or maybe their marketing departments, but I'm starting to think it's mostly the fault of uncaring developers, because if the indie scene has thought us anything is that bad game design is not necessarily the fault of the publishers.

Maybe now, we'll get a conclusion to the story. I doubt it though, this run of the mill online multiplayer title and it's failure will probably equal there not being enough interest in the franchise. Because the people making these decisions are stupid.

I've been hearing things that Eidos is considering rebooting the LoK series, and if they do its not a poor decision as Defiance basically ended in a reboot-heavy way.
Plus with the attention that Eidos gave to Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider, I think they could make a decent LoK game now. I hope they do.
Other funny note, Psyonix made Nosgoth and moved on to Rocket League.

Where did you hear that? Because I would be on board for that, so long as they finish the story the create for it.

I'm kinda curious how they actually could finish it though. Now my LoK history may be a bit sloppy but weren't the Hyldan defeated at the end of Blood Omen 2? Then again considering how awkwardly that one fit in it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to ignore it.

Various sources who wish to remain nameless, but friends who are in the industry and hear random shit. Sometimes its true, sometimes its not but I trust them. I've wanted them to make a new one for a long time and it'd be smart of Squeenix to let that IP get rebooted. Might not sell like gangbusters but there's a lot of people out there who'd buy a reboot and they'd make decent profit from it IMO.

Forgive me if I remain skeptical then, but if true, that would be great :)

No, it was just the Hylden lord that was defeated, but that doesn't mean the war has ended, not to mention that the Elder God still lives. As long as that prison remains the Hylden are immortal.

I'd love to see a rebooted universe since a continuation after Defiance is likely out of the question at this point. With updated graphics it would be nice to see Kain steadily evolve into the master vampire that he later becomes using a variety of texture mapping techniques to alter musculature and facial features.

I remain skeptical of almost any game news until a game is actually released, personally. Rumors or whatnot, shit happens and good ideas go bad, or disappear.
