Well it's unanimous: This is a horrid idea.
Unanimous means EVERYONE thinks it is a bad idea. Obviously the OP doesnt think so. And a few others(myself included) also think its a good idea. So no, its not unanimous.

it wouldn't work. one thing that MMOs all seem to have are a wide variety of customizable character options, this would only have a few characters with very little to customize. otherwise there would be hundreds of identical characters running around. sorry, but it looks like you idea has flopped.

There.. fixed
There is no Human race in the Zelda universe. Also, the Sheikah are their own race.

All that being said, I like your idea. It will need work, but it's good for a base design.

Zora's, Goron's, Gerudo's, Hylians and Faires. Thats just the races I can name off from random memory. There are way more in the actual game. That combined with the fact that it isnt too hard to make characters have customizable looks/traits means that the only thing that flopped is your argument.

hmm.. maybe if they made the story like this: a super evil overlord guy dude it invading hyrule!! all the players go through childhood and become a man, then enlist in the army, then they fight in a huge war. they could have a story based around you, they did it in LOTRO and it worked REALLY well, and the combat would need tweaking, but if the game where based around a huge war, with just LOZ backdrop im in, and have cool horses is a must!!

No, I don't think so.
I'm not saying it's not doable (the Zeldaverse could definitely support an MMO), but the fact is that I don't see how it would be a stand-out MMO in any way, shape or form other than the fact that it's set in Hyrule. In which case, it'd be selling entirely off fanboy appeal.

thinking back there are more races and possibilities than i originally gave credit for (it was 1.45am ish when i did it) but i'm still not sure if it would be a good thing. with the 'flopped' business, i meant it in terms of a general opinion judging by what everyone had been saying so far, not just my own view.

I'd like to see a Zelda MMO with SNES style graphics, playing out a little like Crystal Chronicals. Was Four Swords any good? I'm thinking something like that, except nobody gets to be Link. Oh, or maybe the boat ownership and customization from Phantom Hourglass would be the direction to take this in?

It should never/would never happen. Still, it's interesting to think about the different possible classes. Like Gorons, Zora and Kokiri, and the unique abilities of each.

I think what could possibly happen is if Nintendo just released a free-to-play open version of Ocarina of Time on the Wii, where you can create a character and play through a multiplayer version of OoT, and generally just use Hyrule as your own personal chillout space.

Let's face it, it wouldn't be any worse than Home.

the concept is interesting but wouldnt work due to the game flavour. one boy dressed in a green tunic steps forward in a time of need to save the realm and become a hero.

just wouldnt work

Well its imperfect and rushed I worked on it with some extra musing engery I had.And there are humans they fall to certain factions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Races_in_The_Legend_of_Zelda_series#Human

the trouble is you can't mix factions and races so strictly, so you make races with a stat system based then apply the cast/class from there.

Sheikah are far more a class/faction than a race, like necromancer or Summoner.

Now you could combine Huamns and Hylia give them the same stats and merely separate them by their facial/nose and ear features, but at this point and time taking in as many races as possible is a good thing.

One could even do half breeds, characters of mixed races.

You need the evil races as races to select as well, do this is a WOW style good side and evil side, with neutral having on and off again relations with both sides, even go as far to force opposing sides to go into opposing towns covered up in either a blanket or robe that covers them up. Use a gameplay gimmick to have guards toss them out, if you sneak past them slowly they will ignore you if you rush past them they are more apt to chase you.

This might not be applicable to a online game setup, but ideas are just that ideas.

Why dose it work for FF or WOW when you have dozens of characters to replace the the handfull of lead characters from the game.

Fris toff you have to understand you can play as nearly any character or class so its not all just Link clones, yes you can be Link like but not everyone will be Link like.

In my mind its WOW with zelda graphics puzzle themed dungeons and a action game focus rather than stat based bashing.

I believe they should make a zelda mmo but should stay with the same formula that has worked so freaking well. just expand on the combat a little more let me know what you really think and feel free to pitch in ideas

- they could take hyrule and expand it to be huge so the game world would be bigger they have tons and tons of places to pull material from, like all the games
- you could play as several races from a zora to a hylain <-spelled wrong most likely
- use the combat system from TP or Oot just beef it up with more spells and weapons
- leveling up basically axed from the game getting more hearts is basically the same allowing you more than the standard twenty hearts
- link, and zelda are still in the game not playable

i know there are way more please give me some thoughts
even though most people are saying no i actually think that it could be a great idea.

Okay but it's still a majority.
