Well the long long realization is that it will not work.
I do like the idea, i would love to play as a Goron and smash the hell out of a little Deku, but it will definitely be shit.
If you want an MMO then play World of Warcraft and imagine that Night Elves are Zoras and gnomes are Dekus.

there was a mmo based off Zelda it was called graal and it is still active though that was the 2d zelda :p
doing some quick googling, it appear to have lifted some graphics of the third zelda (a link to the past), not the second. But it seems that that is where all comparisons end.

btw, i for one don't necessarily think it is a bad idea; it might bring some innovation (for which the zelda series is famous, despite what some people who can't seem to look past the general story setting think) to a genre that seems to be stuck in its format (mmo's).

I'm going to break the mould by saying yes!

What are the complaints of almost every MMO on the internet? Well, most of them have a "Click and sit there" Combat system, most of them consist of Epic Grind where you spend 8.7 years watching your character harvest Wompa Turnips for 3 copper a Turnip, and earning you a whopping three levels (thus unlocking the ability to cut down trees for some reason).

Legend of Zelda would never work that way. However, the endless "Lookit! I iz Yatz33! Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" says a lot to me; it says nobody plays Puzzle Pirates.

Puzzle Pirates has no levelling - I can do any skill as an Able Greenie that an Ultimate top-spotter can. The only exception is that, whilst a 'Greenie', you get a brief easy-mode that teaches you how to play. So, aside from the first 5-30 minutes, you never 'unlock' new stages.

Likewise, Puzzle Pirate's combat system is unique (and Puzzle based). You don't click "Attack Nefarious Trout", you actively have to steer the ship, fire the guns, and make sure your crew (who are all fellow players) are loading your guns, sailing your ship, fixing the holes and bilging water out.

Puzzle Pirates is an MMO, and a very good one. It is nothing like WoW.

So, the question is how would a Zelda MMO work? Well, the combat system might need tweaking; it works just fine for PvE, but PvP would be trickier. That said, however, Dynasty Warriors has managed PvP, so it by no means would not work.

The next question is where the emphasis lies. The game wouldn't work if the grand duty of your Hero is to go out and slay thirty boars as in World of Grindcraft. Again, Puzzle Pirates puts the emphasis on fleet battles - you go Pillaging vs NPC ships, you raid NPC islands (in Cursed Island battles) or Atlantis (in Atlantis battles). You can also do Flotillas and Blockades, which can be PvP or PvE.

Unfortunately, the main driving force of Zelda is the Triforce, and we can't really have players all questing for that. It'll get silly. Instead, let us take Link and Zelda out of the equation.

Set the game pre-Wind Waker. Ganon's minions are buggering up the place, and there's no Hero of Time to fall back on. Instead, we need the ordinary mortals to step up to the plate and kick some ass.

There's plenty of scope for Classes in Zelda - swordsmen are an obvious choice, there's no reason we couldn't see a mechanic for using other weapons. Archery (with sling, boomerang and/or bow) is already present in Zelda, and Magic could be adjusted to work as a full-blown career choice. Let's not forget horseback combat; Twilight Princess showed us it could be done, and I would love to be able to ride down evil minions as part of a coordinated cavalry assault.

Zelda is never going to work as a WoW clone, but it could definitely work if it takes the MMO concept and tries to be imaginative with it.

3.Races

Goron
Deku
Fairy
Zora
Rito
Moblins
Bokoblin
Gerudo
Hylian
Sheikah
There.. fixed
There is no Human race in the Zelda universe. Also, the Sheikah are their own race.

All that being said, I like your idea. It will need work, but it's good for a base design.
Well its imperfect and rushed I worked on it with some extra musing engery I had.And there are humans they fall to certain factions
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Races_in_The_Legend_of_Zelda_series#Human

the trouble is you can't mix factions and races so strictly, so you make races with a stat system based then apply the cast/class from there.

Sheikah are far more a class/faction than a race, like necromancer or Summoner.

Now you could combine Huamns and Hylia give them the same stats and merely separate them by their facial/nose and ear features, but at this point and time taking in as many races as possible is a good thing.

One could even do half breeds, characters of mixed races.

You need the evil races as races to select as well, do this is a WOW style good side and evil side, with neutral having on and off again relations with both sides, even go as far to force opposing sides to go into opposing towns covered up in either a blanket or robe that covers them up. Use a gameplay gimmick to have guards toss them out, if you sneak past them slowly they will ignore you if you rush past them they are more apt to chase you.

This might not be applicable to a online game setup, but ideas are just that ideas.

the concept is interesting but wouldnt work due to the game flavour. one boy dressed in a green tunic steps forward in a time of need to save the realm and become a hero.

just wouldnt work
Why dose it work for FF or WOW when you have dozens of characters to replace the the handfull of lead characters from the game.

Fris toff you have to understand you can play as nearly any character or class so its not all just Link clones, yes you can be Link like but not everyone will be Link like.

In my mind its WOW with zelda graphics puzzle themed dungeons and a action game focus rather than stat based bashing.

remember that there are the kokiri too! and the best race would be the flying humanoid birds from windwaker.

Well if you want a perm loli/shouta I guess kokiri would do... LOL and yes the Rita are the wind people from WW.

But heres the thing
Typical Human
Hylia
Kokiri

I kinded tried to limit it with a balanced set of Light, neutral, dark races and now that I think Kokiri would make a perfect neutral light leaning race...mmm

An MMO set in the Zelda universe might be interesting, in some kind of civil war where all the races are against each other. But a Zelda MMORPG with too much emphasis on magic abilities would be a Very Bad Thing. The only Zelda-related things should be the locations and the fact that there's swords... and bombs.

The most obvious setting for a Zelda game would be between Majora and Wind-waker, when Ganon has returned and Link's off messing about in Termina.
