Second Sight was on all 3 platforms last gen but now I always see it in bargain bins for less than 5 dollars. It is a shame that it never caught on because it was a good game. It had decent enough third person shooting aspects but it is one of few games that managed to add a psychic power aspect that worked really well. Story was pretty decent as well, though I can't remember all details.

Legend of Dragoon was mention but deserves another mention. I wouldn't call it flat out better than FF7 (it loses by miles in the soundtrack department), but both were really good games.

Beyond Good and Evil I wouldn't call lesser known, especially to most people who frequent sites like this, but it was a great game that didn't become popular. If you don't know of it, it was a adventure game with slight combat but also some stealth aspects. It has a photography element you don't see often enough, but its strongest aspect was a solid story and 3 fantastic main characters.

believe it or not, final fantasy tactics for playstation, just magnificent, no matter how much you power level the game will still kick your ass. it's the darkest final fantasy in the franchise, and it seems no one will talk about it. Possibly because Ajora (Jesus stand in) is both the prophet and antichrist of the in game religion. Very dark.
The reason I hate it is because it is so slow. And not just slow from a SRPG perspective, but just plain slow. Slow text with no speed options was the deal breaker for me. Luckily they fixed this and the games other problems with War of the Lions on PSP.

However, I would call this far from unknown. Every SRPG gets compared to tactics and it usually falls into a "too much like it so it sucks" or "not enough like FFT so it sucks"

When they compare SRPG's, they speak of the sequel on GBA, not the playstation original. Though I do admit it is pretty slow... But still awesome!

I've mentioned this plenty of times before but:
S.L.A.I
Awesome mech combat, decent split screen and multiplayer, decent PS2 graphics, decent amounts of creativity, excellent characters, a good plot, and stellar level design. Added bonus were believable non-cutscene characters (generic ones fought in matches) who all had individual play styles, awesome boss fights, and the chips allowed the game to better fit your play style. I'll just post one two pics this time.

No one ever mentions Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the N64. It was just as good as the rest of the adventure games on the 64 that came out around the same time.

Star Wars: Republic Commando for the original Xbox. Freakin' awesome, even if you're not a fan of Star Wars.
I thought that was known...this makes me sad...
Sadly, it did suffer from a short campaign, but it was still awesome.
But
why Sev? I liked him...
and George Lucas made it all non-existent. He made the events never happen when he changed the canon for The Clone Wars series, thus destroying the Republic Commando/Imperial Commando series. And I liked those. Some of the best video game books since Eric Nylund's halo series (only Eric's. His were best). So, the events never happened, but they are friggin' awesome theoretical events though...
Curse you George for destroying ANY long-lasting and slim hope for a RC sequel.

All the older LEGO games. Both Lego Racers games, Lego Island games, Lego Alpha Team, Lego Rock Raiders. Lego Loco was one of the first games I played that I can remember.

(praying someone will make a third Lego racers)
I still have all of those. Seriously. Even have the original lego creator, legoland, and stunt rally.
And you all not alone in wishing for a new lego racers. I made some of the characters from there in ModNation, so it's close, but not the same

Oh, and the only good star wars game next to Battlefront 1 and 2:
Star wars: Republic Commando.

This. was. THE. game. actually made star wars feel like there was a war goin on. So amazing. Such love for it, but I lost my copy in some way and haven't seen another since. I miss it so. Screw KotoR
It's on steam for ten dollars. The Multiplayer community is still pretty good, and there are some decent mods around. Nothing is better than sneaking through the jungle to raid a trandoshan base, or taking on a spider droid with only two people. Only wish is that it was longer, and for co-op

Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

It just has so many good mechanic ideas, and it's very good considering it's on the xbox original.
I freaking loved that game.

Blast Corps for the N64. One of my first games ever. I never knew what to do, but damn I had fun doing so.

The Void.
I shall second that[sub]damn you ninja, I wanted to say it first[/sub]. I just love that game, for me it's the best game game ever made.

OT: Apart from The Void, Pathologic deserves a mention, mainly because it's the only game that has gone to themes of infection, medicine and a dying city. The Path also deserves a mention for being really open to interpretation, then there is The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom, one of the best platformer/puzzle games ever made. For me it's as good or even better than Braid. I haven't seen many people talk about it...
Another one is Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
Never heard of Pathologic, but I didn't mention "The Path" because it seems like it got some press. Ill hear it get mentioned somewhat frequently as an, "Art game". I will agree that it deserves more. i think I mentioned Void because...well, the actual gameplay is what has the meaning. Path gets a lot of mileage out of visuals and a sense of exploration, but in Void, the resources you are managing, and the choices you are making have an actual metaphorical value. The Path is good, but Void is better designed.

Though I see the comparison to Braid, I think I prefer Braid to P.B. P.B. is a great silly adventure, and the mechanics alone are very comparable in quality to Braid, but Braid manages a rare, touching story about love and loss. And I think we need more of that in games.

I think I forgot Kabuto because when it was first released, me and all my friends played it to death. It was awesome.

Does this qualify as lesser known but awesome? I think so.
Hosed and Screwed were freaking hilarious. The thing that I hated about it now though is that I got it for the Gamecube and it didn't have online seriously great story HILARIOUS characters and dialogue and definitely needs a sequel.
