Mischief Makers on the N64 was pretty awesome and it was something different as well. You couldn't tell by looking at the box but this game got really intense and some of the boss fights were the most fun I've ever had.

Spectre (no, I didn't spell it wrong), it's a pretty old computer game with a very simplistic design but it had amazing atmosphere. It's kinda like Battle Tanks but it has a lot of interesting things in it like fighting from under the stage and killer walls that chase you.

There are many I just can't remember too well now.

Legend of legaia, A great FF-type game, but more awesome. My friend had it on PlayStation 1 when I was a kid and I loved it.

Another old one: Chips Challenge, a really fun puzzle solving game.

Herrrmm Metro 2033, not exactly unknown, but it REALLY deserves more respect, it is an AWESOMELY made game with a good story and fun combat (my only regret is that its to short :( )
Should be played for the 50.cal Machine that is modified into a Heavy shotgun, at least.

Probably Condemned 2: Blooshot. It seemed like no one played that game. I got it for clearance for like 10 bucks at BB, thought it was AMAZING.

Gundam Vs. Gundam Next Plus is pretty obscure considering its a Japanese exclusive PSP game. But its one of my favorites. It just has this great simplistic face paced multiplayer action gameplay that is a fun homage to all of the Gundam series at once.

I wouldn't say Golden Sun is "lesser known". It's just "handheld only", and a lot of people, like me, can't be bothered with handhelds.
Yeah I agree golden sun sold over a millon copies worldwide, so its not all that obscure unless you try and compare it to Final Fantasy.

Does Nox (the RPG/Diablo clone) count?

Also, I barely hear anyone talk about Mount&Blade, which is a shame. I once suck a whole consecutive week into that game.

Does Wizardry 8 count as lesser known? If so, that gets my vote. That game is goddamn awesome.

Fighter - Killer Instinct
Platformer - the classic Banjo Kazooie because all people now care about is Super Mario... and he was BESTED!
FPS - PainKiller
Brawler - PowerStone 2 (not SSBB)
Other - Cubivore it was a great game but I don't know how to classify it!
Classic 2.5D - HeXen
Space RPG - Freelancer
Sci-Fi FPS - Tribes Vengeance

EDIT: Platformer - Psyconaughts, and Rocket Knight Adventures
Other - Strider 2
Side-Scrolling Shooter - Einhander

EDIT 2: Adventure - Midevil
Action - Sin & Punishment
Shoot 'em up - Crimsonland
Rail shooter - all of them they seem to be forgotten... Carnevil, Area 51, etc.

believe it or not, final fantasy tactics for playstation, just magnificent, no matter how much you power level the game will still kick your ass. it's the darkest final fantasy in the franchise, and it seems no one will talk about it. Possibly because Ajora (Jesus stand in) is both the prophet and antichrist of the in game religion. Very dark.

Agreed, when people hear PS1 and Final Fantasy they think...
1) OMG 7!!!
2) Ugh 8 SUCKED!!! (note: I liked the game just not the magic/junctioning system)
3) wasn't 9 on there? that one rocked but everyone was a little KID!

Xenosaga and Odin Sphere. It's really hard to find people that know about this.

And, believe it or not, around here not many people know about Fatal Frame...
While I'll give you Odin Sphere (I really can't find many who like, let alone know, the game), Xenosaga is definitely far from being unknown. If anything, it has almost as annoying a fanbase as Kingdom Hearts.

OT: Shadow Hearts: Covenant, The Darkness, Siren Blood Curse, Obscure (hurhur, fitting title), Haunting Ground, Resonance of Fate, Klonoa, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (granted, it only just came out, but no one I've talked to has even heard of it till I mentioned it)

I'm not sure if it qualifies, but the Myst series. AMAZING games, even for someone like me who doesn't like games where you don't kill anything. Only problem with it was that it was SO FREAKING HARD!!! The strategy guide is pretty much required for them.

Star Wars: Republic Commando for the original Xbox. Freakin' awesome, even if you're not a fan of Star Wars.
THIS!!! OMG THIS!!! This game brought badass into Star Wars. Of course, no one played it because that was the time where they kept making the shitty SW games (that obi wan game and the starfighter game) but everyone should definitely play this game.

The Void.
I shall second that[sub]damn you ninja, I wanted to say it first[/sub]. I just love that game, for me it's the best game game ever made.

OT: Apart from The Void, Pathologic deserves a mention, mainly because it's the only game that has gone to themes of infection, medicine and a dying city. The Path also deserves a mention for being really open to interpretation, then there is The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom, one of the best platformer/puzzle games ever made. For me it's as good or even better than Braid. I haven't seen many people talk about it...
Another one is Giants: Citizen Kabuto.
