Trademerged Summer

1st Hematite:
The first day of summer is a bleak one. Terrible sounds of crashing, screaming, howling, and splintering echo from the walls. Our masons rush to forestall them as I supervise from as safe a distance as exists in these dark times.

4th Hematite:
Success! Our Jeweler has finished his work.
Spirits are raised across the settlement as news of this wonder spreads. I cannot help but feel that we will surely prevail now!

5th Hematite:
The invaders are walled off. Trademerged is safe...for now. The goblins and trolls have commenced grisly celebrations in the former deathtrap, smashing things and trampling the bodies of the fallen. I have put together a plan to deal with them.

15th Hematite:
Our counter-tunnelling has revealed an aquifer. Under normal circumstances I would be put off, but now...
DROWN YOU DAMN DIRTY GOBLINS!

27th Hematite:
With an almighty crash, the massive wad of soil slams home! The goblins are sealed in the secondary tunnel, doomed to drown. Not a single one shall escape.

16th Malachite:
The Troll has escaped! I had forgotten the hatch that led from the deathtrap into the evaporation chamber below. When he smashed it, he was swept through by the current of water. The military has dealt with the situation without loss of life.

21st Malachite:
Citizens of Trademerge, breathe easy!
The abhorrent indoor refuse heap has been cleaned up, it's contents hauled a new walled outdoor dump near the Great Stone Face. In addition, minor garbage, such as vermin corpses and food wasted, can be crushed out of existence in our wonderful lever-powered disposal system.

22nd Malachite:
A small, yet crucial, bit of engineering was completed today. One of our masons undertook the dangerous task of plugging the hole in the deathtrap and saving us the work of pumping out the evaporation chamber when all this is said and done.

23rd Malachite:
More good news yet! The first lot of open-plan apartments has been finished.
There's been a shocking lack of floor space in the living quarters so far, and this is the firstfruits of my efforts to fix that.

28th Galena:
I proudly report the final elimination of the Goblin invaders.
There is now only silence (and water) in the caves they have occupied for the last three months.

I may as well report on our new entrance hall.
Hopefully, visitors will now be impressed by our wealth rather than our squalor.

And with that, I close this scroll. Summer has proven a far better month than spring, and I can hope for a great Autumn.

Nobody paying attention? I may as well turn in my autumn post:

From the Journal of Äs Erushcerol:

1st Limestone:
I'm beginning to realize that I may have overlooked something during my seasonal audits.
I'm commissioning some new farmland to compensate.

7th Limestone:
I've assembled a comittee to research how best to drain out the death trap.

13th Limestone:
One of our Bonesmiths has started acting a bit strange.
I hope something good comes of it.

27th Limestone:
Two weeks have passed and indeed our bonesmith has made something wonderful.
Unfortunately, we have no one skilled at Mace, so it will have to occupy the stockpile for now.

3rd Sandstone:
Several of my woodbearers have told me stories of unmined gems near our settlement, practically falling out of the hillsides.

Initially I scoffed at such claims. After three years, surely such easy treasures would have taken! After supervising an operation that involved moving massive piles of gold nuggets merely to get them out of the way, however, I thought twice about it.

Indeed, no more than a stone's throw from our drawbridge, there was a cluster of uncliaimed schorls.
I ordered our miners to perform a thorough search of the area and pluck this (figuratively speaking) low-hanging fruit.

4th Sandstone:
My Death Trap Drainage comittee has thorougly studied the situation over the last month and offerred me four possible options.

a)Who cares? Just ignore it.
b)Mine out the entirety of the Aquifer, thus destroying the source of the water.
c)Bore a hole into the underworld and let them deal with it.
d)Pump it out and smooth things over an inch at a time.

I've promised to consider each of the plans carefully.

17th Sandstone:
The new farm plots are complete.
Soon we shall have all the plants and berries our stomachs can hold!

17th Timber:
ARRRGH! Twice in one year!?

18th Timber:
Scouts report to me that this assault is being personally led by Bosa Snoduboband, general of The Nightmare of Chewing.
He's probably here to determine what happened to the last batch of goblins to come this way.
They're big on initiative and personal reponsibility and stuff like that. If we could take him out, the ensuing power vacuum might collapse hard enough to leave us alone for a while.

Now I must close this scroll. The Goblin invasions have thwarted my ambitions for trade, but I can at least rest assured that my successors will not lack for material.

This winter I hope to do unto these latest would-be conquerors what I did to the last.

I am still here. A shot of the artifact's description might be interesting.

Just started processing my first world. Any hints?
Use the wiki. A lot. I believe there's a beginner's guide on there. Even so your first fort will be a horrible failure. Remember DF's unofficial motto: "Losing is fun."

The other DF LP thread is more active, so you might want to ask there.

Goblinbone Mace Description:Ralnugreth Rablektad "Silverweather the Glowing Lure"
Value: 5640¤

This is a goblin bone mace. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is decorated with goblin bone and dog bone and encircled with bands of dog bone. Not terribly exciting, but it makes a nice authority stick for whoever's in charge. Anyone who's got a trudgeon made of defeated enemies is not to be trifled with.

Okay. Here's Winter
From the Journal of Äs Erushcerol:

1st Moonstone:
Of all the seasons, I love winter most. No caravans come, no one travels. Snow falls, covering everything in a smooth, even coat.

5th Moonstone:
An elaborate drowning trap I begun work on this Autumn is nearing completion.
Goblins will enter at the top left and have to laboriously make their way to the right. The water (when poured) will also come from the left, in order to prevent escapees.

I hate to use such blood-chilling logic, but that is what it will surely take to defeat such a leader as Bosa!

16th Moonstone:
Before I can deal with the goblins, I'll first have to elminate their Troll allies.

19th Moonstone:
The Trolls were easy enough. I lowered the drawbridge and they charged directly into the cage traps. I then raised it and put our new friends in storage.
With that done, it's time defeat Bosa and his goblin army once and for all!

21st Moonstone:
Tonight, our heroic Miner, Ducim Etostzefon, makes his way through the crooked passages of our trap and noisily makes a hole through the loam above into the outside world. The goblins will surely hear this and assume it's an escape attempt.

22nd Moonstone:
Before Ducim can even make his way back to the trap's entrance, the goblins have entered from the other side!
We can hear them laughing as they discovering our "escape" tunnel.
Ducim waits until he can see the goblins at the last leg of the tunnel before he signals the lever to be pulled. The floodgate lifts and water begins filling the tunnel.
After a few hours of listening, it appears the trap is not as efficient as I would like. My engineers assured me that the high water pressure would fill it instantaneously, thus killing all the goblins at once. Since that is not the case, I recommend to my successor that a second flood gate be added to the middle of the right-hand side.

My scouts have noted that two goblins have escaped the deathtrap and are standing, dazed and confused, outside the now-open drawbridge.
No doubt they are waiting for direction from their doomed general.

7th Opal:
While we wait for Bosa to meet his maker, I've sent our army to deal with the dithering loiterers out front.
It may not be the best trained or equipped, but at five-to-one odds, that shouldn't matter. There's a bin shortage on, and that means a log shortage, and all the trees are outside. The way needs to made clear to cut them down.

8th Opal:
I received a battle report this morning from a dapper-looking Sodel. It appears that one of goblins was slain easily enough, but the other managed to escape after mauling every dwarf in her squad except her.

I went down to the hospital to visit our injured only to discover that it, like everything else here, was haphazardly hacked out of dirt and stone.
Yes, shrubs and cave moss are growing in the hospital. Horrified, I took swift action, confiscating some unused sleeping quarters.
It's not a perfect solution, but it will do for now.

11th Opal:
Bosa Snodubobang, General of The Nightmare of Chewing, longtime enemy of The Puzzling Lancer, and general scourge upon the Earth, is dead, drowned in our deadly water trap.

This is a great day for our colony, our nation, and dwarfkind in general. I am commissioning a tablet in honor of this glorious achievement.

7th Obsidian:
The trap has been drained and reclamation is proceeding apace. My engineers have neglected to account for the aquifer below and much of the loot has, unfortunately, ended up in the trough meant to drain into the underworld. My successor should take note of this and build a proper tube for future use.

In other news, I have been informed that the aboveground refuse heap is three-quarters full.
It wasn't intended for so much rubbish of this kind and my successor should enlarge or replace it.

9th Obsidian:
A new project: I've ordered our workers to begin paving the drowning trap so that bushes and trees don't grow up and block it's operation. It wouldn't be finished this year, but starting now will save grief later.

12th Obsidian:
For the love of....
I order everyone inside. I delay shutting the drawbridge until the first company has entered and been entrapped.
My successor will have to deal with these captives, as well as all the others I've been to busy to sort out. I've also ordered more cages be constructed from the wood we were able to scavenge between sieges.

15th Obsidian:
For the most part, the dwarves shuffled to the "Safe" areas with bored sighs and grumbles, but a quick check of who was inside revealed something terrifying: someone was missing!

The guard standing watch in the above-gate bunker heard a scream and reported whose and why: Reg Domabisol was unable to reach the gate in time and was struck down by the goblins.

RIP Reg Domabisol 14th Slate 41 - 15th Obsidian 129

20th Obsidian:
The trap has more-or-less been cleared out and I'm ordering it put back in to readiness. The paving will have to wait until later; apparently, around here, there isn't enough time between invasions for anything to grow.

28th Obsidian:
I've spent the last week checking our records and doing paperwork for a quick and orderly transition to the next administrator.

Ecnomic Comparison
The wealth of this site has more than trebled since I arrived. Our trade stockpiles overflow (Note: Enlarge the stockpiles) with valuable goods! The only concern I have here is the consistently disappointing returns from out farms. I was expecting to acquire most of our food through trade, so I lay this shortfall at the door of the goblins.

Finally, some notes for my successor: The lever for the drawbridge is in the dining room. The lever for the deathtrap is on the next level up, at the end of the southern passage around the old, flooded deathtrap. My quarters, to which I'll be retiring, are on level one hundred twenty. I'll happy to offer advice if you need any.

And that's that. Here's the file: Trademerged [http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5386]

Ha, double post is double posted.

And wow, you actually kill goblin sieges. That's something you've got over ReveredTour at least.

Too bad you can't find any new players. I love to read your "reports". I would do it, but I never got into playing DF myself... at least not successfully (dear god, all those poor souls)...

At any rate, good luck finding a suitable successor among the migrants/escapists.

(Also have you considered to "restart" the cycle of players till you find someone new? Either by re-electing one of the earlier leaders or by creating a new persona!?

Any chance of uploading a file that works?
Mediafire deleted my file? Curse them!
I'll get back it up in just a bit here.

And it's back up! Download it here [http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5386].

You know i am somewhat tempted, but the story would end with:

"...and that burning heap is what is left of the fort."

so i hope someone competent comes along.
