Max Payne 3 looks interesting, but I've never played the previous games in the series. Does the gameplay hold up in those?
Well, I loved the previous two games. Very interesting story, although some might say the "bullet time" gameplay mechanic is very overdone.
I can't think of a single game I played with a bullet time mechanic...
Seriously, what are some? Maybe Max Payne 1 and 2 will be fresh to me.

Risen 2: Dark Waters (it's an ArrrPG! I'll never get sick of using that line)
Risen 1 was pretty interesting (Heard the console port was bad though) but it was extremely difficult. It was a spirtual successor to Gothic 1/2 and those games were pretty damn hard too, but I never got very far in Risen. Definitely interested in Risen 2 though, there needs to be more pirate games.
Oh yeah, the controls on consoles are total ass in Risen. I definitely wouldn't recommend the game (or at least not that version). But I played through it when I heard the sequel was going to be pirate-focused. I love pirates, especially since I'm around a lot of pirate history here in Charleston.

I take it that you're a fan of Pirates? Like, the pirates who plunder booty, not the ones on the internet, right?

Yessir. I'd read the Twilight novels and be proud of it if they had pirates (do they have pirates?). I'd...go to a Celine Dion show if there were a chance of seeing pirates.

If the haters are right about it (And keep in mind, I'm not a fan by ANY means), then there are pirates of the posterior variety. But that's not what I assume you're looking for, correct?

Perhaps that will be the next faction in a Fallout game. A pirate faction. Like Ceasars Legion

Yeah. Those stupid copyright infringing bastards have nothing to do with with the raping, ransacking, scruffy fellas who terrorized my hometown 300 years ago.

No offense, but I always found it a bit silly how pirates are romanticized by some people in the media. Then again, I'm from Saint Louis. We never really had a problem with pirates.

Eh, I think part of the reason is that it's pretty easy to separate fact from fiction in this case. Pirates raped, they laid sieges on cities [http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1860715_1860714_1860711,00.html] (note: it's Charleston, SC and not Charleston, NC as the article says. I don't know how they got that wrong).

A bigger reason: they are associated with the ocean, probably the most romanticized environment there is (or it's up there, at least). There's mystery in the ocean, which is part of what makes pirate mythology so compelling to me. I really wish a game would touch upon that. The pirate explores that mysterious and daunting sea with his ship (sort of a nautical stand-in for a horse). Then there is what pirate's are at their most basic: Thieves. And the media has a long history of romanticizing thieves in general. So their portrayed as roguish, daring, and quick-witted.

But ahhh...we're going a bit off topic. Unless there's a thief faction in New Vegas that's particularly endearing...

...nope. Kind of strange for an RPG to not have one of those.

Huh, I'm surprised you didn't show the line by Pete where he pronounces Caesar's name both ways.

I actually remember seeing people on this website getting all angry about how they "pronounced "Caesar" wrong!!!".

I thought it was great that Obsidian bothered to make the Latin in NV as authentic as possible.

Do you pronounce it "Louie" or "louis", because I've heard it both ways.

I pronounce it "Louis". As do most people I know who live in that area. Some people may say "Saint Louie" but that's almost always in an informal tone and setting. "Louis" is more formal, and what more people use.

This is just a little side update, showing off how not to make your way to Vegas. We will start off again where we were last update, later I'll show a route that you can take that will take you straight to Vegas extremely quickly with very little fuss.

[HEADING=1]Fuck It, Let's Just Run Straight to Vegas[/HEADING]
So, let's say that you just ignored the constant warnings not to go directly north that you've probably gotten from all of the NPC's in the tutorial area. You've ignored the multiple, fuck off "STAY OUT" signs along the path. Let's say you saw a deathclaw, and instead of running away in abject terror, you charged it head on.

This is what happens.

Note that we have the Lightweight Metal Armor and the Merc's Grenade Launcher from the Courier's Stash DLC. Without the Mercenary Grenade Launcher, good luck making any sort of progress against these enemies. Their DT makes them just shrug off small arms fire, even with the grenade launcher, some of them can take quite a few hits from them as well.

So first things first. Let's say you decided to go directly north out of Goodsprings. This is the most sane approach (Well aside from going the way the game intended) because your way isn't blocked by Deathclaws. What is there, however, is no picnic either.

So, there is a rather noticeable "KEEP OUT" sign along the road. I don't blame people for ignoring it, as videogame logic says that behind the "KEEP OUT" sign is usually where you need to go.

The game really funnels you along these roads. Lots of invisible walls and such, but I get why the game does that.

Cazadores. People fucking hate Cazadores, and it's no surprise why. They're fast. They do a lot of damage. They poison you. They are hard to shoot. They take a surprising amount of damage.

And they can come out of nowhere.

They don't do well against the grenade launcher though, which is good.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention another thing: They come in swarms.

Of course, when they close the range, using the grenade launcher is a tricky proposition.

We kill them, but it's too late. They poisoned us and...

Admittedly, if I played it a bit more strategically there, I certainly could have kill these Cazadores. It's just that there is even more Cazadores, and you'll end up probably using all of your grenades on them. After that, you got no good weapons against them, and you're pretty much screwed.

Okay, now we're back where we started. Let's try another direction.

Back to the graveyard area. Another sign telling us to stay out.

So instead of Cazadores, todays flavor is Radscorpion.

And as with the Cazadores, our only really effective weapon is this grenade launcher. And using it at close range is obviously a bad idea.

They do a lot of damage.

I get a bit too enthusiastic with the grenade launcher...

So now, we're going another direction. When leaving Goodsprings the normal way, take a left at the crossroads takes you this way.

There are some Powder Gangers along the road. They are hostile to us by default, as we are villified with them already.

Takes one shot with the Sturdy Caravan Shotgun.

Even more of them.

We kill a couple of cute Coyotes puppies for no reason other to being a dick.

Let's try the machete.

It's pretty strong.

The Quarry is over there. We can't actually enter it from this direction.

Just follow the train tracks.

We eventually come along a town with this guy in him. Just ignore him, he has no idea what he is talking about.

So far, so good.

That's a deathclaw all the way over there in the distance. It can't see us yet, right?

Wrong.

Oh shit.

Crap, crap.

Somehow, I manage to kill it.

But if you keep going forward...

Adult Deathclaws. And they just shrug off grenades and such.

Yeah, that outcome was expected.

Let's keep to the right and try to avoid all of the deathclaws.

There is a super mutant here who warns you of hostile mutants ahead. Fuck his advice.

For some reason, the game loses saturation for a second, and then the color goes back to normal.

First time fighting Super Mutants in this game. They're a lot more threatening than they were in Fallout 3, but that's simply because there are way less of them in this game. And not all of them are hostile.

The grenade launcher is so satisfying to use.

But, it still didn't help much.

We make it a bit further this time...

So now we're in the clear, right?

FUCK

Okay, fine. We'll take the long way.

So, any games you guys looking forward to this year?
Spec Ops: The Line looks very promising, I've been following it for a while and am very much looking forward to it.

Obviously Bioshock: Infinite too.

Also, Borderlands 2. DO WANT.

Other than that, not much, never been a Mass Effect fan.

I forgot about BioShock Infinite. The first BioShock was too scary for me. It gave me sooo much anxiety while I was playing it, so I quit not longer after that first "boss" fight (the doctor who mutilates patients). I remember walking into this one room with a flooded hallway. A body floated down towards me and I could see the shadow of someone hacking away at something at the end of the hall. When I went that way more, the lights went out and some freaky music played. Then I said, "Oh, hell no", cut the game off and sold it to Gamestop. But it was actually just the normal people in the game who freaked me out more. They were so depraved. It gave me this sick feeling in my stomach. It wasn't an enjoyable gaming experience for me.

Infinite does look good though. I'll have to wait until I hear things about it before I make a decision. I don't handle horror well, even if it's just remotely horror. I almost quit playing Mass Effect on my first run through it because of the Husks.

On topic, I found sneaking by the Cazadores and Giant Radscorprions a memorable experience. It did what no Bethesda game has done yet: Make the world feel threatening. I still don't know how I survived that time, as the Cazadores were going after me for a while. But then they quit. Maybe when they go so far away from their "area", they have to return. And I wasn't even trying to kill them. They found me despite my Stealth Boy, so I just ran and didn't look back. Those are still the most threatening creatures in the game to me. It's all part of the survival aspect in New Vegas. I liked that I felt it was necessary to scout the land ahead of me before I went forward (I remember being overjoyed when I found a pair of binoculars early in the game). It reminded me of a few of my hiking trips when we checked for mountain lion and bear tracks.

At least the abominations have the decency to kill you in melee, with the Fiends, they will gun you down from a distance.

To be honest, I never found the fiends to be much of a chalange. Even at early levels, I kill one and nick all their stuff to use on their buddies. But those bug things? Freaking hate them.

I never really had many problems with any enemies early on in the game. I headed straight for Novac and this was back before Boone got patched. Which meant he would always headshot enemies and kill the quickly; made exploring much more easier.

I remember when I first picked up Boone. It freaked me out that things were appearing in red, and I thought it was a bug. But no, I dismissed him, and it went away.

I mostly went solo in NV though, except a while with Cass. That was fun. She was a pretty cool dude.

Her companion perk was great, especially if you were role-playing a drunkard type character :D

She also has one of my favourite companion endings (the one where she tries to have sex with you but only finds an NCR soldier), along with Boone (spitting in Lanius' eye and becoming feared by criminals) and Raul (becoming the ghost vaquero).

I played a teetotaler both times for two reasons

1) Personally, I dislike the taste and smell of real alcohol, so I have decided to avoid it for roleplaying reasons (Though I once played a alcoholic Tiefling in Neverwinter Nights 2, so I don't exclude all my characters in that regard)

2) 10% addiction chance? You gotta be freaking kidding me!

But yeah. That ending where she tries to boink you is kinda funny.

I know there's like, one way, or something, to get a super happy ending for everyone. But you really have to plan it in advance and meta-game. Or at least that's what I'm told

Yeah, it's difficult.

One thing that makes it difficult is deciding what you consider to be a "good" ending. None of Veronica's endings are particulary happy and cheerful and Arcades aren't the greatest either. Lily and Rex depends on what you consider is best for them and Lily's in particular took me a while to get right.

So yeah, the best thing to do is plan ahead.
