Heh.. should have been a sniper or heavy weapons guy instead. They get all the kills. x/
Guess it's partially because soldiers are plentiful.
Oh, and I didn't there were girl soldiers! Awesomeness.
There's a number of reasons snipers get lots of kills. The main one is X-Com's mutual surprise rule, which basically means that if you spot an alien and the alien spots your soldier at the same time, it can perform reaction fire against any action you take, but can't react to anyone else, so moving a spotter up and then shooting the alien from outside it's sight range is the safest way of dealing with them.

Also, snipers have the accurate Heavy Laser, whereas soldiers have Laser Rifles, which are more of a spray and pray gun, and very rarely fired in anything other than automatic fire.

Yup yup, that's the normal reason sniper get the most kills in most games.. and reality. x)
But then, normal soldiers are and will always be the backbone of an army, so I'm probably more proud being one, and am avoiding summoning arrogance from within me. =)

I'd be very interested to know how many extra copies of X-Com are being sold right now ;)
I know if I hadn't bought it the day it showed up on Steam I would buy it after reading this.
It was a happy day when I saw my old passion and joy available on Steam.

X-Com Incident Report, 1st March

The call came in just after midnight. A bogey had been detected by the South East Asia base, and their interceptors weren't ready yet. An interceptor from the main base was launched.

Shortly after detection, the UFO landed. At this, the skyranger team also set out.

Before the skyranger arrived, the UFO took off again, fortunately, the interceptor was holding station above it, and forced it back to the ground.

The skyranger arrived and the assault began.

----

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 7.

The skyranger deployed in the centre of the mission area, with the UFO to the southeast.

AceDiamond rolled the UFO onto the skyranger's ramp, and the splash of plasma fire greeted him once more. This time, however, the fire was much more intense than usual, and the UCV was soon reduced to a smoking pile of scrap.

Fortunately, we were prepared for this eventuality, fire on deployment being such a common event, and Armitage Shanks rolled a smoke grenade out of the skyranger to cover the team's deployment.

Shanks then stepped out of the skyranger and advanced cautiously through the smoke. He spotted an alien almost instantly.

Knowing that the alien could probably see him and would likely shoot if he moved too quickly, he signalled the squad, Bling Cat II moved cautiously down the ramp and shot at the alien. The thick smoke made landing hits difficult, and the alien returned fire, fortunately the body of the skyranger blocked it's shots, and Bling Cat II was able to kill it.

Armitage Shanks resumed his advance, still cautious, as this alien was in the wrong place to be the one that slagged the tank. Sure enough, he soon spotted the culprit.

Cyberoth took up firing position at the end of the ramp and nailed the alien in the head.

The team dispersed out of the smoke and scouted the mission area, no more aliens were lying in wait outside the UFO, and so the team converged and breaching charges were placed in the eastern wall of the small vessel.

The charges go off, and Armitage Shanks and Bling Cat II cautiously peer into the interior. It looks clear at first, so Cyberoth enters through the door. Sure enough, there is an alien cowering in the blind spot behind the power core.

Cyberoth raises his laser rifle and blasts it in the back.

Report Ends

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

This mission reinforces the usefulness of an easily replaced unmanned vehicle as the first one off of the skyranger ramp. No man could have survived the firepower the aliens met our deployment with, and whilst the UCV is expensive to replace, it is not a living and trained human being, and we don't need to hold a funeral for it. A replacement UCV has been ordered.

The value of carrying smoke as a backup plan is also demonstrated here, anyone following the UCV without it would also have been shot down by the second alien covering the skyranger exit.

Is it too late to join the ranks of X-Com operatives?

I wanna blow up aliens... urm... I mean, save the world too!

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine

Day 59, Peace and quiet.

After the UFO caught on the first, the opening days of March have been quiet. The science team has had time to complete research on the first suit of Personal Armour for X-Com personnel.

However, this armour will certainly not be strong enough to withstand the aliens' weaponry. Much thicker, heavier armour will be required, but the kind of thickness that will protect a man from plasma weapons will be impossible to carry or move in. To that end, research has begun on the power generation systems of the aliens' vessels.

A replacement for the UCV destroyed on the last operation arrives, and it is loaded onto the Skyranger.

----

X-Com Incident Report, 11th March

Once again, the South East Asia radars pick up an alien intruder. The interceptor there is currently undergoing maintenance*, so an interceptor from the main base is launched.

The UFO is smaller than any we've yet seen, and the Avalanche missiles terminate it in a spectacular fireball. Nothing larger than a penny survived the explosion, so there is nothing to recover.

End Report

----

X-Com Daily Report

Shortly after we splashed the last UFO, work was completed on researching the UFO's power sources. With this, we have all the prerequisites to build powered armour suits. Research on these has begun.

Before too long, the call came in to action. Another attack on a populated city, this time Pretoria.

X-Com responds.

X-Com Battle Report, Terror Mission 2

AceDiamond is able to deploy the new UCV without taking fire this time, as he scans the LZ an alien is spotted to the east. Higurashi, CAPSLOCK FURY, and a scout deploy and open fire, eventually the scout brings it down.

The squad disperses into the open lot next to the Skyranger, another alien is spotted next to the same building as the first. Higurashi shoots and kills it.

As the UCV advances onto the road, AceDiamond catches a flash of movement through a building, since it didn't look human, he let loose with a rocket into the nearside building wall to clear a firing line. The alien can't be seen at the moment though. Another two aliens are spotted to the south however, the southernmost one is sniped by Looney.

The other alien can't be hit by anyone at this point, it takes a few potshots at the UCV to no effect, but then hides behind the nearest building.

More movement is spotted through the hole AceDiamond's rocket made, but no-one can get a positive fix on the source still.

A scout moves forwards to try and find the alien that shot at the UCV, as he does he spots another one through the building. A soldier shoots it.

Having also spotted the other alien in that area, Higurashi manages to line up a shot and puts it down.

As the UCV advances south along the road, yet another alien is spotted in the open park area.

Looney snipes this one as well.

As the UCV's cameras sweep the area, they reveal an alien hiding behind the fence south of the LZ. As the fence is made of flimsy wood, CAPSLOCK FURY opens up on full auto and drills through it to kill the alien.

Advancing further along the road, the UCV spots a Reaper in a small empty lot at the south edge of the mission area.

As no-one else is in position to hurt it, AceDiamond blasts it with a rocket.

Meanwhile, a soldier advancing along the north edge of the mission area comes under fire from a building to the east.

Combined sends a rocket into the building wall and Looney tries to snipe the alien but misses, eventually the solder is able to fire himself and drops the threat.

Armitage Shanks and Higurashi on house clearance duty on the western edge of the area spot another Reaper, they open up with everything they've got and the reaper is killed.

Fighting continues around the building in the middle of the mission area. Unfortunately, an alien gets the drop on Cyberoth and kills him.

A second alien is spotted rounding the corner of the same building, and RootOfAllEvil snipes it through the rocket blast hole made previously.

Birras, CAPSLOCK FURY and the UCV converge on the point where Cyberoth died, AceDiamond sends a rocket into the alley entrance but to no effect.

Eventually AceDiamond spots the alien, and CAPSLOCK FURY is able to flank and kill it.

Report Ends

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

Urban combat has been shown time and again by wars on Earth to be dangerous and deadly, and fighting opponents from space renders this no less true. The loss of Cyberoth on this mission is a blow, his career looked to be promising. Fortunately, he matched the neuromedical profile and signed the release waiver for Project Lazarus, and his body was rendered to X-Com cybertechnicians for reanimation. They predict only minimal loss of combat skills through this operation.

Ah yes, urban warfare.. something I'm pretty good at. And yeah, it sure is dangerous. Gotta stay on your toes exactly all the time. Shanks, good work partner. It was good to see I got some action this mission. The ones where they invade sure are bigger and more dangerous.

WOO! Go Project Lazarus! I can continue to be fodder!

Also, this is easily the most fun I've had on a forum ever.

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine

Day 73, Transfers

The workshops at the South East Asia base are coming online in a couple of days. The engineers packed up today and set off for their new home. We'll be starting manufacture there as soon as they get set up. New recruitment took place for engineers and defence staff for the base as well. The living space previously occupied by engineering at our main facility will accomodate an expanded science staff.

----

X-Com Incident Report, 14th March

No sooner had the field team stood down from the Pretoria incident than another UFO sighting was called in by radar operators, at the edge of our detection radius and heading east towards the South East Asia station. Interceptors from both bases took off to pincer the UFO.

The UFO was initially lost heading east, but picked up again at the South East Asia base. It crossed their radar coverage area and was lost again over Japan, but interceptors picked it back up and chased it back west over China, finally bringing it down over western China.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 8

Deployment went smoothly this time. No fire greeted the UCV as AceDiamond rolled it out.

As the squad deployed, a Sectoid was spotted to the East.

Birras lined up a rocket and blasted it.

The squad dispersed, heading south towards the wreck of the UFO. Movement was spotted and the UCV moved in to investigate, eventually spotting another Sectoid hiding behind a wall.

The bulk of the UFO and high hedges blocking lines of fire made this a difficult shot, but X-Com soldiers were up to it, and the alien was killed.

A stun grenade from the south east bursting against the UCV's hull announced the presence of another alien.

AceDiamond lined up and fired, and it was toast.

This drew fire from yet another alien in the orchard to the north of the UCV's position.

An X-Com soldier flanked it, and saturated the area with laser fire, burning through a tree and the target.

The LZ now being clear, the squad made ready to breach into the UFO.

As the charges exploded, a startled Sectoid ran out of the UFO hatch, but was gunned down by RootOfAllEvil, who was covering the door for just this eventuality.

A second Sectoid tried firing out of one of the breaches at Armitage Shanks, but could not score any hits, and Shanks was able to advance and stun the alien.

Report Ends

----

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

A textbook operation this time, no casualties were suffered and the UFO was recovered, another prisoner has been taken, and will be interrogated when time permits.

Additionally, due to the expansion to overall X-Com personnel, further promotions have been made.

Good news from the science team as well, the prototype Power Suit is completed, and building sufficient to equip the whole field team will be the first task of the new manufacturing facilities.

Out of interest, you kept talking about defensibility for the bases, so do the aliens ever end up attacking the bases directly?

They'll have to find them first; but yes, once they find our bases, they will most likely attack.

Best get some proximity mines for that occaision

"You can be my wingman anytime!"

As for the recent incident, yes, second capture. I'm loving that cattle prod.

Does make me wonder, can the aliens capture us?

You annoy them enough, and yes. They start running Alien Retaliation missions, which if they find the base lead to a very nasty attack. As mentioned, they get to bring Terror Units, which are annoying, but they also get a Commander, and that means they get a Blaster Launcher. Which are, frankly, pants browning, as they almost never miss, fire round corners, and have an 11 square radius which is almost guaranteed kill to the strongest units in the game.
