X-Com Incident Report, 16th February

Another UFO was detected in the small hours of the morning, not long after stand down from the last encounter.

It bolted north and contact was lost over Eastern Europe. As this is well within our radar coverage we suspect it was on an exit path and left atmosphere at this point.

X-Com Incident Report, 17th February

The skies are busy this time of month, three UFOs in three days. This one heading south. It looks like the focus of operations for the aliens has shifted to southern africa.

Contact was lost with the intruder a short while after detection.

But interceptors picked it back up and it was downed over Madagascar.

The ground team set off, but did not arrive until after nightfall local.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 5

We still have not completely resolved the problems of fighting at night, and likely never will. However, we do what we can. The Skyranger touched down roughly in the middle of the mission area.

AceDiamond moved the UCV out, the LZ was quiet. Too quiet. Armitage Shanks began deploying electro-flares, and spotted an alien close to the exit ramp, but fortunately with it's back to us.

Soldiers disembarked, and the alien was gunned down.

Flares were distributed around the mission area, revealing no further aliens outside.

This UFO was damaged and smoking, so we knew the internals would be ruined. Since we already had a high value prisoner, and were not willing to risk live capture again on this operation, it was decided to breach the door and send a rocket in to deal with anything inside.

The door was breached in good order, and Combined stepped up to the doorway with a rocket launcher, and since there was an alien in sight, lined up a shot with it as a point of reference.

Unfortunately, the rocket was wide of the target, and exploded against the back wall of the UFO, failing to kill the alien targetted but killing one behind it.

Combined was in trouble, with no time to get out of the UFO and blocking the doorway for shooters behind, there was no alternative but to brave the inevitable return fire. Fortunately, the alien's shots went as wide as the rocket.

Having luckily survived, Combined cleared the doorway and RootOfAllEvil sniped the alien from outside.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

Whilst this mission was a success, it clearly showed that if the field team decides to lead into a UFO with a rocket, they should do so with a larger rocket, and from a safe distance, not inside the doorway. There is, after all, no such thing as overkill.

Day 48, Defences.

We have finally completed overhauling the base's defensive layout.

All the entrances to the facility are along the north edge, and all have to pass through the entrance elevator. If we are called upon to defend the base, we can use a combination of ambush points on the way out of the elevator and mining the entrance itself with proximity bombs to cause casualties to an intruder before they can get into the base proper.

X-Com Incident Report, 19th February

It never stops. Yet another UFO detected heading for southern Africa. This time one interceptor is assigned to pursue the intruder and the other to make best speed to it's likely destination.

As predicted, the UFO heads beyond our radar range, but is picked up again by the interceptors, herded to shore over Madagascar again, and shot down.

The skyranger team is already in the air and on the way, and they arrive shortly after dawn local time.

End Report

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 6

Once more, the UFO is heavily damaged, smoke pours from a gaping hole in the upper side.

AceDiamond deploys the UCV and spots an alien, he fires a rocket but it clips a corner of the UFO and explodes against it.

The alien returns fire and hits with what appears to be a grenade launcher, but the UCV is completely undamaged by the blast.*

Armitage Shanks disembarks next and sprays the alien with laser fire, eventually putting it down.

As the squad disperses, an alien comes floating through the air over the stricken UFO. Though shocked by the fact that these purple aliens can fly apparently unaided, the squad responds by opening fire and the alien is put down, falling through the hold in the UFO roof.

Shocked by this, another alien bolts out of the UFO door but is gunned down by Bling Cat before it can take another step.

Exploring the western edge of the mission area, Armitage Shanks spots a small building, and calls in fire support from Birras to blow out the wall and expose any aliens hiding inside. As Shanks advances further he signals that there was indeed an alien on the edge of the rocket blast area.

RootOfAllEvil snipes it, and it goes down.

At this point, things took a turn for the worse. The UFO is breached along the southeastern wall, and Bling Cat and Combined enter. Unfortunately, an alien was waiting for them, Bling Cat is gunned down by heavy plasma fire, and Combined is seriously wounded, but manages to fire a rocket into the wall beside the alien, the last one left.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

It is my belief that X-Com's recent string of successes against this type of alien craft has allowed complacency to set in, breaches are no longer as cautious as they should be, and the doctrine of multiple breach points should be resumed immediately. We must not allow our planet to be lost to complacency and rash actions.

There will be a memorial for Bling Cat in the mess at noon.

----

OOC Note: The alien was using a small launcher, it fires stun grenades, so doesn't affect the tank.

X-Com Incident Report, 22nd February

Two days after the loss of Bling Cat, the sirens wailed again.

An already weary and shaken ground team geared up for action, but the UFO was on it's exit path and exited atmosphere over the UK.

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine

Day 53, Losses.

I knew when I accepted the job that running X-Com would mean sending men to their deaths, but that still doesn't make it better when it happens. The lull in the action at the end of February allowed some time for mourning and reflection, and to try and cut down on casualties I have ordered the science team to begin work on something to protect our troops in the field. Against the power of the aliens' weapons they won't be able to do much, but anything will be better than what we have now.

The first step was completion of research into the aliens' power source, and the fuel for it, Elerium-115, and investigation into the alloys used in the aliens' UFO construction.

Whilst this was going on, the first hangar complex at the South East Asia base was completed, and an interceptor has been ordered to fill it.

The science team comleted research on the aliens' UFO alloys. They began work on a preliminary protective armour suit incorporating these tough alloys.

This armour will likely not be tough enough, but it's a first step to something that will.

----

X-Com Incident Report, 28th February

After a week of seeming inactivity from the alien menace, a UFO was spotted grounded in the Arctic.

Since this UFO was landed normally, it would certainly have recoverable Elerium fuel. The team was dispatched to recover it.

----

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 3

Deployment went as expected, AceDiamond rolled the UCV out and was met with immediate enemy fire, but the UCV only sustained minor damage.

AceDiamond turned the camera to spot the firer, who was standing next to it's craft, another alien was behind it but facing away.

AceDiamond fired and the first alien was vapourised by rocket blast.

Doomsly McSlaughter attempted to fire on the next alien, but his rocket clipped the UFO wall and exploded too far away to do damage. Bling Cat II, sister of the first Bling Cat who signed up on his death, burning with the desire to avenge him, disembarked and fired, winging the alien but not killing it, and another soldier fired for the kill.

The squad is fired upon by an alien to the south, but terrain obstructions block it's fire. Bling Cat II moves south to shoot it, and is fired upon by another alien to the south east, it hits but only singes her uniform*, she fires and the southern alien is killed.

Higurashi opens up on the southeast alien, and hits but doesn't kill it.

Gamebrain89 lines up and snipes it though.

AceDiamond advances the UCV along the southern edge of the UFO, and reports sighting another alien far to the south.

GameBrain89 snipes this one as well.

The LZ now being clear of further aliens, the squad lines up and places charges to breach the UFO interior

Mindful of the dangers faced in these UFOs in the past, Doomsly McSlaughter and Birras load up their highest power rockets and fire those into the interior.

The screams from within inform us of the death of the crew.

----

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

After a week downtime, the field team has returned to peak performance. Caution is once again out watchword when entering alien vessels, and we have recovered another source of Elerium. February has been a busy month but we have ended it on a high note.

----

* OOC Note: There were loads of low/no damage hits this mission, sectoids don't usually survive a laser hit either.

I'll miss Bling Cat I. He had the best name of all.

Also. Where did Combined go? Is he still hurt from that unfortunate space ship assault?

At that point, I believe you were still recovering (28 day recovery time). You will return to action though.

Man, that must have been some serious injuries that Combined sustained. Oh well. He'll be back on the job shooting aliens with rockets in no time.

While it stinks that I screwed up my first shot, I feel a deep sense of accomplishment and awesomeness at having nuked the crew of the ship.

X-Com Council of Funding Nations Gold Level Clearance Required.

X-Com Monthly Performance Report, February 1999

X-Com has expanded and reinforced it's facilities significantly throughout February. The main X-Com base in Europe is now fully organised around defensibility and beginning work expanding it's science facilities.

The secondary base in South East Asia is almost ready for operation, an Interceptor craft is on it's way to the base, and living quarters and workshop space are being constructed.

Perhaps this information has somehow leaked to the aliens, however, as they appear to have refocused efforts on Southern Africa and the Arctic.

Fortunately, both of these areas lie within X-Com's interception range, and we have been able through skilful piloting of our interceptors to track and destroy the aliens wherever they have struck.

X-Com has also managed to make itself financially stable, manufacture and sale of motion tracking devices has allowed us to bolster our income and continue our operational expansion.

Work is well in hand to produce protective armour for X-Com troops in the field, and preparations are being made to begin interrogation and investigation of captured alien personnel.

Based on the performance of X-Com for this month, the Council of Funding Nations has decided once again to increase X-Com's primary funding to further it's mission of meeting the alien menace.

Heh.. should have been a sniper or heavy weapons guy instead. They get all the kills. x/
Guess it's partially because soldiers are plentiful.
Oh, and I didn't there were girl soldiers! Awesomeness.

I'm afraid I can't help it, the R&D guys have advised me against it; but poking the captured sectoid with a stick is fun...I hope I'm not hurting his feelings much.
