President Kennedy was an alien and Oswald spotted him?

No way can this be right. No wonder they kept it covered up...

X-Com Monthly Performance Report, May 1999

Although it initially appeared to be quiet after the frantic pace of April, May turned out once again to be a massive escalation of the war.

X-Com has been as busy as ever this month. We have shown the invader that there is nowhere we cannot strike at them, either on their largest ships, or on their most secret bases. Nothing will protect them from the might of X-Com.

Once again, X-Com's maintenance budget consumes our income from the council, and much of the actual warfighting budget comes from captured alien technology disseminated to interested buyers.

We must also at this time examine the strategy of the alien in approaching the United States Government. Examining sightings and activity data we see that until this month, America was largely left untouched by the alien invader, with no significant incursions in their skies or against their populace, it was easy to encourage isolationism amongst politicians and people alike, and call into question the monthly contributions to the X-Com project as a waste of money.

The appearance of an alien base in the United States, at one of their most secret military installations, also calls into question the length of the relationship at the highest levels between aliens and government, and gives credence to the longstanding rumours surrounding the Groom Lake facility. Maybe Roswell was more than they ever let on.

Nevertheless, X-Com's activities proceed apace, research attention is being given to the origin of the alien attackers, and to reproducing the aerial mobility of the hovertank for infantry. Additionally, the research team is expanding once again, and a third team will shortly begin work on the remaining captured alien technologies.

Production of the first operational Firestorm interceptor is going well, in a few days, this craft will be ready to accept armament, and when operational will allow X-Com to cut maintenance budget on leased interceptors, as well as providing massively increased shoot down capability.

The withdrawal of the United States from the X-Com Council of Funding Nations has been a blow to the project, but other nations who have suffered at the hands of the alien invader have increased their contributions to take up most of the shortfall.

So despite taking out half their infiltration force and blowing up Area 51 the USA decided it was still worth signing a pact with the aliens...bastards. Currently I'm restraining myself from contacting the few friends in the US Military I have left and asking them to try and overthrow the government. No sense in making things any worse than they already are. The conspirators will answer for this eventually. For now we have to still figure out where the aliens are coming from and stop them at the source.

In about 6 days project Firestorm will be ready for its first test flight. I am interested to see what its capable of.

So this is what it feels like to have your guts melted by plasma fire. I'm pumped full of sedatives and painkillers, so mostly everything is a haze right now, but I do remember the indescribable pain of feeling your guts melting out of your belly, and I do remember the sight of an indistinct grey fluid leaving my mid-section. That's about as specific as I can be. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so pain-resistant. Passing out at that time would have been a whole lot easier than to watch my insides boil outside of my body. I have no idea how I survived. All I know is I only saw one thing in front of me as that spear of searing, sizzling pain had its way with my body... and that was the faces of everyone I love.

I almost surprised myself by counting them all to so many... but it was also that which allowed me to struggle past the pain. Not because I've done this for a long time. Not because my body is conditioned to the strain and pain. My conviction and the immeasurable power of love kept me awake and up. Someone rushed to me with a medkit. Probably saved my ass. I'll have to find out who it was after I get out of here. Not sure if I should proceed with a boot to their head or thank them though. Agh, here it comes again...

-Higs, in pain.

Shared some vodka with Comrade Fury and exchanged battle scar stories. The man truly lives up to his call-sign. Seems a little too eager to get into action all the time. Almost to the point of insanity. But then again, that could have been because of the alien grenade.

Saved some of my private vodka stash for comrade Sgt. Higs . Those plasma burns will be hurting like bloody hellfire. Some vodka will help overcome the pain. Now to sneak it into the infirmary.

End log.

Company Chaplain's Personal Log
May 31st Anno Domini

It has been a busy few days. I have now taken part in a victory without having to bury one of my flock, but there have been wounded. The one funeral that was held was a dignified one.
I try to hold a vigil with the wounded as often as possible, but battle and rest require much of my time. Reat, after all, is weapon. The injured are in pain, but they keep good spirits and receive many visits from their comrades (one of whom tried to switch the Holy Water for the Sacrament with vodka, naming no names).
And the flock are beginning to Believe. Despite coming under heavy fire, I have always come back to base unscathed, even when the man next to me has not. The Hand of God shelters the faithful. Many of them now visit me regularly, even if to discuss the mundane rather than the Divine. Brother David is a good companion on most days, and he suggested that we buy the Machine ANTX81 a fruit bat, for reasons which currently escape me.
The Americans have betrayed us, and made a pact with the Forsaken. May they suffer as Faust did. The spawn of Lucifer will benefit them not at all. If I had my way the next combat landing we make will be the White House. I would leave my plasma gun behind and take my flamer, filled with Blessed Oils. Holy fire would be a just end for the enemy.

Typical yanks eh? Isolationist and overweight. Although I'm not sure if the overeating actually had anything to do with their withdrawal of funds, but I can't really be sure these days.

No-scoped an alien on the last mission as well. Felt quite proud of myself I must say.

Men seem to have recovered despite our recent losses, I only fear there will be more ahead.
Look forward to prototypes of these flying suits, but even more so on knowing a bit about the grey fellows.

Anyway, must stop writing, time to go and wax the mustache.

It stretched all the way back to Nixon and we never knew.

This is a blow that's hit me a lot harder than I expected. What happens if America actually starts attacking us?

Hell, they can send the SEALS in if they want. X-Com will be ready.

Terrible news. The American government has been infiltrated by alien sympathizers. Were they cowed by a show of force? I doubt it, our direct action must have caused our invaders serious embarrassment. I suspect something else is going on here, although what I have no idea. We've got to get the technology to even up the odds in the air. Perhaps if we had downed a few of their battleships en route... well, there was nothing that we could have done. I hope we can get the new Firestorm craft operational quickly. We can't let their air superiority win this war for them.

Technically America can't do much to us, if they try to halt X-Com, we can just make their little "pact" public, I reckon their government would collapse in twelve minutes.

Preacher Saul's an observant man. Spotted the switch of the Holy Water with vodka. Don't know if he knows who did it. Of course he does! Who else has vodka in this place but me?

No matter, managed to sneak some in anyway in a mouthwash bottle. Sgt. Higs was amused.

On a more urgent note, American's have signed a pact with the aliens. I don't know for what purpose, but I think it's a matter of the utmost urgency that the FSB know of the latest developments. I will hope and pray to the Lord Almighty that this will not end in a world war between nations. We can't afford to be caught on two fronts.

X-Com Incident Report, 1st June

Our alien foes appear to have fallen into a pattern. After a burst of activity at the end of every month, they fall back to probing raids with scout vessels. This month was no different.

A scout craft looking for targets for a terror raid was detected over the US heading for South East Asia. The Asia base launched their interceptor and met the alien craft over southern China, where it was shot down.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 18

Deployment went without a hitch. AceDiamond floated the UCV out of the hatch and scanned the area. He spotted an alien to the east of the LZ.

Combined II deployed to deal with it, and spotted another to the south.

Dekkarax disembarked as well to support, and the second alien opened fire on him. It's shots went wide however, and he raised his heavy plasma rifle and incinerated it.

Combined II sighted on the first alien and loosed a rocket, it struck home and the alien was destroyed.

As the squad disembarked, a scout spotted an alien to the south and launched a stun bomb, the hedge and tree cover disrupted his shot however and the bomb exploded short.

Valiance lined up on the alien and blasted it though.

The squad advanced south, hearing the sound of a farmhouse door opening they took cover along the fences across the area. Sure enough, plasma fire lanced out from the south and struck the cover the squad was behind.

Combined II returned fire with another rocket, and the alien was history.

Another month, another routine smash and grab. I'll not complain about the Elerium though, we're going to need as much as we can lay our hands on before this war is over.

Despite the recent developments on the global scale, life continues as normal for us here at X-Com. And life also seems to continue as normal for the aliens. Once again they're scouting for terror attacks, and once again we're bringing them down before they can gather any relevant data. Good thing too, considering the species that they seem to be letting do the primary scouting these days.

It's becoming a tricky balancing act, trying to seize landed UFOs when possible but shooting down others and risk losing the precious Elerium that's needed for our advanced weapons, armor, and vehicles. It's becoming especially valuable to us now that Project Firestorm is almost complete, and it runs on a captured UFO power source, which of course, is powered by Elerium.

And people think dealing with OPEC is a pain, at least we don't have to frequently engage in gunfights with them just for fuel.

As an aside, despite the somewhat wary attitudes of the more international elements of the team given what my country has done, I've found myself feeling a bit more of a sense of camraderie with some of the soldiers on base. Which I guess is a good thing, given how X-Com is pretty much my home now. No way am I going back to the US until this is over.

I find it interesting how the first Terror attack after the US cede to the Aliens is against the Chinese. Asia control inform me that the ship was deliberately trying to be seen and the Chinese authorities are well aware of America's defection.

FOX News have already allowed the Alien Invasion to slip down to number 3 in the running order of programmes. Could we be seeing a media campaign against us?

Damn I want out to bag another cattle mutilator.

Excerpt Personal Journal, General McSwine

Day 152, Retaliation.

Any hopes that tensions would reduce after the end of May were short lived. First across my desk was a report from the science division about exactly what we were facing.

Based on the aliens' attack patterns, and interrogation of prisoners, we knew that we would have to take the fight to them, and we would have to capture one of their highest ranking officers to find out where. We would also need an attack craft unlike any we currently had available to take the fight off of Earth.

In the knowledge that the war was escalating further, we began research on the largest infantry weapon the aliens had been seen carrying.

That was when it happened, comms intercept came in from an alien scout looking for our base in South East Asia.

They were going to attempt to cripple us by striking at our manufacturing facilities. The interceptors launched to prevent them detecting the base, destroying the UFO over the sea, and we began plans to defend it if the worst happened.

Since the attack force would likely be composed of Snakemen and their horrific terror weapons the Chryssalids, the garrison in South East Asia would in no way be able to cope with the attack, so Colonel Shanks was transferred to the facility along with a team of experienced personnel, Jack Lavish, Schizzy, Looney, Bling Cat II, RootOfAllEvil, Doomsly McSlaughter, and Preacher Saul to defend the base. Additionally, there are two plasma armed hovertanks on site.

Since an attack on an X-Com facility would certainly be led by one of the aliens' highest ranked commanders, it would be an opportunity to take one alive on our turf as well, so construction began on a brig facility to hold captives on site.

Secrecy is still our best defence however, and the low speed of Interceptors compared to alien vessels makes it more likely that they will be able to scout out our position with future attempts. The race is now on to get the Firestorm in the sky to intercept aliens further out than an Interceptor can manage.

A ray of hope came from the science team, they had completed work on an antigravity harness for the Power Suit, allowing X-Com personnel equipped with the new Flying Suit to match the capability of the alien Floaters.

----

X-Com Incident Report, 6th June

The faithlessness of the aliens in their pact with the USA was demonstrated when a floater ship appeared to harvest resources from North America.

An Interceptor launched from Europe and met the alien over the continental United States, a short chase ensued and the craft was shot down on the Canada/Alaskan border.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 19

This mission further proved the durability of the Hovertank chassis. Running with a reduced crew due to the defensive preparations in Asia, the presence of the UCV was more important than ever. AceDiamond hovered out of the Skyranger into a hail of plasma fire. Every warning light on the board lit up red, but the tank stayed floating and stayed responsive.

Turning, he spotted the alien responsible.

And opened fire on it, burning it to the ground with the plasma cannon.

As the squad disembarked, more fire came from the west, but no hits were scored. The scout deployed on that flank spotted the alien and opened fire with his laser pistol, killing it.

The crash had done the rest.

Report Ends

----

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

The durability of the hovertank is a major asset at this time, as we are stretched thinner than ever. We will likely have cause to rely on it again.

Extra recruitment to defend X-Com facilities means we need more officers and sergeants as well.

----

X-Com Daily Reports

Shortly after the last engagement, the first Firestorm was fully assembled.

Manufacturing attention turned towards producing plasma cannons to arm it with. These highly complex devices are almost as difficult to build as the craft itself.

The first opportunity to use the new craft, and the first sign that striking at X-Com is not the totality of the aliens' plans for June came shortly after the first cannon was built.

Launching with only one weapon installed, Ninjablu got his first chance to use the Firestorm in combat, the Elerium powered antigravity systems protecting him from massive G-forces as the craft streaked out to meet the latest intruder, destroying it over the Sea of Japan, long before it could reach it's target, and without the long chase that our previous interceptors would have needed to run the enemy down.

It wasn't long before the craft was needed again.

Another scout looking for the Asia facility. This time coming in over the North Pole. Ninjablu launched again, and intercepted the enemy over southern Russia, a safe distance away from the base.

Though he still only had one cannon mounted, the new Firestorm was more than a match for this small alien, and it crashed to earth, the Skyranger launched to clean up the survivors.

Report Ends

----

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Crash Recovery 20

Deployment at this crash site was smooth. No alien fire greeted the squad, and they all exited in good order.

Scouting southeast of the LZ, AceDiamond spotted an alien silhouetted on a hilltop.

A classic error, for which Dekkarax was quick to punish it.

No more aliens were outside at the LZ, and aware of the manpower shortage and the gaping hole in the UFO roof, AceDiamond decided to take the UCV in first.

It's a fair bet that the list of things this Snakeman was expecting today didn't include a tank through the roof, so it stood there stunned whilst AceDiamond blasted it.

Report Ends

----

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

Another mission successful thanks to the versatility of the hovertank, and another mission where the wolf of retaliatory strike is kept from our door by rapid interceptor response.

SciLab finally figured out the aliens are coming from a base in our solar system, they don't know which planet yet though. Maybe I should play "War of the Worlds" at full volume outside their living quarters, should give them a hint; it's obvious isn't it? You don't need a huge research team to know where an alien invasion would be coming from, it's been done in science fiction for years.

Sarge has been telling me to keep my "crazy" conspiracy theories to myself, must remember which sergeant it was, to tell them I told them so; which one was it anyway? I'm sure we've got more sergeants than squaddies, even ANT's one and he's (it? This is confusing) an AI (not that ANT doesn't deserve it; he's still talking gibberish after that grenade mind, guess that rematch'll have to wait).

I finally got a promotion, as you can see from the log title. Must have been all that extra training that I have been doing since I have been out of the combat rotation for a while. We have so many new squad members, it takes a while for the rotation to come back around. The Sci Div finally got the Firestorm up and running. Just in time too, since the alien scumsuckers have been trying to find our bases. It has been taking them down long before they ever get close. Well, back to the range, I gotta keep sharp for when my turn finally comes back around.

Been a busy couple of weeks here. Some of the regulars were transferred out of the primary base due to the aliens now fully attempting to locate our bases, specifically the Southeast Asia base.

Fortunately the General didn't transfer Schizzy out with the others, I have to say I sort of enjoy the spectators when we deploy, especially now that Tom Servo is proving itself to be a very deadly asset. Dropping in right behind that Snakeman through the roof of the UFO and impaling his torso with a plasma beam more than makes up for the jumpy moment a few days ago when the Floaters almost took it out in one salvo.

Speaking of successful ventures in R&D, I am pleased to see Project Firestorm working out so well, even at half its arming capcity Ninjablu has proven himself a capable pilot and has scored two quick kills in the first week of use. I only hope we can keep securing enough Elerium to keep it aloft.

I only hope we can keep the aliens away from base SEA, and any of our bases for that matter. The aliens are sending in their worst at us now, and trying to bring the war to our doorstep for a change.

Fortunately they don't know that even if they do find the base, the humans within will be backed up by not one, but two hovertanks: G0-T0 and Probot. I've found naming them again given the chances they'll live longer has become fun once again, even in the face of a true impending disaster like a base assault.

I don't like the Asia base. Now I have to memorize a whole new set of tight, featureless corridors, and I keep getting lost. Ah well. My quarters are a bit bigger here, so that's nice.

Later I plan to kick back a few brewskies with Bling Cat II, welcome her to the ranks of the Captains. It pays to have friends in the battlefield. 'Course, she's easy on the eyes, as well, but that's unrelated.

Oh, and HELL YES I cannot wait to get my hands on one of them blaster launchers the coats are working on. My trusty rockets are nice and all, but as far as I'm concerned, it's the biggest gun that wins, and I want one. With any luck, I'll have one of those sexy mamas in my hands before the bastards from Mars decide to attack the base. They won't even set tentacle in the front door.

Heh.
