07 - Losses

Our new weapon systems had passed their first test with flying colours. With increased power and deadly accuracy, they would be a significant step on the road to victory. Perhaps it was in response to this that the aliens decided their next gambit. After a period of quiet, they attacked on land once more, and no remote resort this time. They attacked a major port city.

It must have simply been nerves, but I imagined I heard a new, more urgent tone in the klaxon's wail, the field team scrambled immediately, and the Triton shot away, gaining speed rapidly to respond to the alien attack. Interminable hours passed, but eventually the squad arrived and set down. Dawn had yet to break, and the squad were forced to engage at night.

"Go, Go, Go, no time for chitchat people, we have a job to do!" was Bling Cat's order, the team rushed out of the hatch throwing flares to illuminate the murk. Immediately the first creature was spotted on the dock foreman's tower.

The squad opened fire, harpoons spattering off the metal structure, until Squeak brought his sonic rifle to bear, and the dense bolt smashed into the alien, crumpling it in a heap on the walkway.

The commotion evidently attracted the attention of the enemy, fire streamed in from the east, a bolt caught seaman Fish directly in the chest, smashing him against the side of the Triton, where he fell motionless. Zed was closest. "No pulse sir, he's gone."

Bling Cat spotted the alien lowering it's weapon. "Fucker, we'll see how you like it". Harpoons streaked out, glittering in the flarelight, and one struck the alien in the arm, it howled, but didn't fall. Jack Diamond used the gleaming metal spike as a guide, and blasted the alien.

With no time to attend to seaman Fish's body, the squad began to fan out around the Triton. Almost immediately, another alien was spotted approaching the stern of the vessel.

Zed pulled his dartgun and fired, but the small darts failed to take the alien down. Higurashi rounded the nose of the Triton however and opened fire on the creature's exposed flank, sending a steel shaft through its guts from the side.

The immediate area appearing clear, the Coelacanth moved out into open ground to the west. It immediately sent up warning alarms. One alien was ahead of it to the northwest, another in the building behind the Triton.

The Coelacanth issued a fire ahead warning and began to fire it's gas cannon at the target ahead. The darkness interfered with it's target solution however, and it was unable to land a hit. Higurashi joined in, as did Raven del Cid, it was del Cid's dartgun that finally put the alien down, lodging a dart in it's throat, causing it to collapse with a gurgling scream.

Meanwhile, more alien fire from the east caused Bling Cat and Jack Diamond to duck into cover. Turning, they spotted the shooter.

Dekkarax hefted his gas cannon. "Oh no you don't sonny", he quipped, as he sent explosive bolts pounding into the alien and the wall behind it. The creature's pulverised body fell with an audible splat.

An alien burst from the building to the north of the Triton, but Zed, still gripping his dartgun, fired instinctively, and the beast was felled.

The assault from the east continued, fortunately finding no new targets, the source of the attack was given away by the sound of it's fire.

Jack Diamond had taken high ground on top of a dockside building, and was able to sight on and shoot the alien.

Meanwhile, Zed crept stealthily through the building the last alien had emerged from. He spotted another through a doorway, and with Doomsly McSlaughter Jr. covering the door was able to surprise and stun it.

In order to spot targets and direct the squad, Bling Cat had moved to the foreman's tower at the edge of the dockyard. As he entered the main building, he was surprised by another alien inside.

The gas action of his harpoon gun hissed, the chamber was empty. "Shit", shouted the Lieutenant, and ducked back out of the door. Fortunately, the alien had not been able to react, and Bling Cat was able to reload and re-enter to put the creature down.

Having taken the elevated position, Bling Cat was able to spot another alien closing from the east.

"Another closing, Squeak, you're best placed, take it out".

"Aye sir, have a shot".

The team began to disperse, clearing out the last pockets of resistance. A lone panicked alien in the far northeast corner of the operation area was hunkered down in the concrete of the docks, firing wildly out at any who approached. Evetually, Doomsly McSlaughter Jr. was able to get close enough to spot it.

Pumping harpoons into the creature silenced it's fire, and the sweep continued. Raven del Cid burst into a building to the southwest, spotting one alien in the middle of the room, he quickly stunned it.

Roland Garros-Shanks burst in after him, and spotted a second alien which Raven had missed, and which was approaching his back. A solid bolt from the gas cannon put it on the floor. The area was clear at last.

On returning to the Triton, seaman Fish's body was nowhere to be found. Thinking the worst, the squad swept the area again, hoping that the aliens had not discovered and stolen the corpse. No sign was found until the squad entered the Triton, where the corpse was strapped into an acceleration couch. None of the squad had moved it, and yet there it was.

On returning to the base, Fish was transferred to the medical facility, where scans showed that his entire torso was shattered, however on attempting to perform a post-mortem examination, the body jerked up and threw off the doctors, becoming inert once more when they retreated from the room. This apparent Zombie Fish resisted all attempts to remove its diving suit, and would not communicate at all. It was left in the medical room, and rumours began to circulate that moans and muffled cries of "Braaaaains" could be heard from the door...

LOG OF X-COM OPERATIVE: CODENAME "SQUEAK"

ENTRY 006

*Log start*

They attacked Vancouver, but we stopped them.

We, ah, we lost Fish. He was a fine soldier, and I mourn his death. It was all too fast, we were leaving the Triton and he went down, dead. We found his body strapped in already after the battle, I'm guessing it was the pilot.

Someone has been using it to make zombie jokes, I keep hearing moans of "Braaaaiiinnns!" coming from the post-mortem section of the med lab when I go for checkups. Not cool, making fun of the death of one of our comrades.

Oh well, I suppose Fish would want us to carry on, and not be too effected by his death. I might go to one of Numlock's prayer things, I want as few of us to die as possible.

The events that happened during the attack on Vancouver have left me equal parts confused and a slight bit worried. First the obvious. One of our squadmates, Fish, died. I saw him take a sonic round right through the torso and collapse as we were disembarking from the Triton. Zed checked his pulse. He was dead. Dead Dead Dead Dead Dead. Did I mention the dead part? Because that's kind of important.

Once we finished off all the attackers and headed back though, his body was somehow strapped into his seat. Everyone denies that they did it, and I tend to believe them. We were in a high-risk situation and nobody would've spent time lugging Fish's body into the ship while we were still under fire. So, that was mysterious. Now I'm hearing strange noises and reports from the medical wing, something about how they can't get him out of his suit and that he's still moving of his own accord, making the "zombie" part of his name chillingly accurate. Have I seen this? No. Do I believe it? Well...we are fighting aliens, what's to say there are more otherworldly things occurring here?

My father told me of stories of some of his comrades being killed in action but brought back to life...is this what's happening here?

What a rush. Pop sure was right about the thrill of the kill. I got my first taste of action today, and it sure wasn't anything like training. For one thing, there were a lot more rounds being fired back at us this time. I managed to tag my first Xeno, and I can't wait to write home to Pop about it. He always use to tell me the coolest stories about his service in the first war, and he about flipped when he heard I would be serving under Admiral Schwein. Guess the guy's got a good record so far. Well, I plan on creating an impressive record for myself, and that alien dirtbag was the first rung on the ladder.

I hear another seaman named Fish was killed in action. I was focusing elsewhere at the time, so I guess I missed it. I didn't really know the guy, but it's certainly sobering to lose a crew member so soon. I'll have to be sure I avoid any fatal wounds while I'm mowing down the enemy.

Also, as a side note, I should make sure to detour through Medical on my way to lunch tomorrow. I could have sworn I heard some messed-up moaning coming from down the hall, and I have to admit, my curiosity has gotten the best of me.

Now to sweet dreams of green blood.

There are few places to purchase fine wine in la base, so un chance to go topside was blessing. But I never make to market. Damnable Aliens, preventing my connoisseur nature to have better attention!
Still, I was able to find un bottle in the foreman's shack, and take it with us. It is too rich, perhaps being of fifteen dollar quality, but it served.
I commiserated with other bunkmate of Fish' death. He is not sure he is of the liking of me being Lord of the Bunk, but I think he isn't of the caring.

To a comrade in arms.

08 - Breakthroughs in Technology.

The end of February came, with no further contact with the alien, and no resolution for the Zombie Fish situation. There was some dissatisfaction on the oversight committee, with few successful interceptions made, questions were being asked.

In early March, a knock came at my office door, theJrade, evidently now some kind of liaison from the science team, had brought news of the latest breakthroughs.

"Sir, we've cracked another one sir"

"Another what?"

"Another of those alien guns. The big one they brought in, it's similar to the first one, looks like a case of bigger is better for these alien weapons."

"Good, we'll get these out to the heavy weapons team, the latest few missions have shown that even explosive bolts aren't packing enough punch."

Shortly after that meeting, I was called away to oversee initial drilling on a second X-Com facility. The criticisms raised by the council were valid, we had not got the detection capability we needed to fight this war, the aliens were slipping through our fingers, their subs too stealthy to be picked up by global passive sonar monitoring. The new facility, off the Pacific coast of the USA, stretched our detection out into the Pacific.

Shortly after my return to base, we finally picked up a sonar contact.

The Barracuda launched, the alien vessel was nearly at the edge of our sonar range, so we had no time to lose. The flying sub streaked south at maximum speed, but it wasn't enough.

"Contact's gone sir, should I RTB?"

"Negative Barracuda, go to last known position and patrol."

"Aye sir"

The minutes passed, then suddenly the radar crackled and burst into life "Contact's back sir, sneaky bastard's doubled back, thought we'd gone home for milk and cookies".

"Well then Barracuda, show him his error"

"Aye sir, calculating a solution now... Got him, permission to fire?"

"When you're ready son."

"Torpedoes away"

"Contact's gone sir, totally fragmented".

"Understood, RTB for your milk and cookies Barracuda, Base out."

As I was leaving the command room, I was run into by theJrade once more on his way to my office.

"Sir, we've got the last of them, the alien guns sir".

"Excellent, step into my office, we need to discuss the next phase of the research program. Please, have a seat. Now, we've got the guns, but the unfortunate Seaman Fish has shown us that we need protection as well. These aliens seem tough, especially in the face of our explosives, what can we find out from them"

"Well sir, the place to start would be the ones that have been out on the land missions, their hides are tough as hell, almost like artificial armour."

"Get on that then, cut one up for me and see if there's anything we can use".

"Ahhh, sir, there's a bit of a problem with that."

"Go on..."

"Fish, sir. He's still in the morgue, and we don't go near it."

"Right. Well you let me deal with that, then cut me up an alien."

Coaxing Fish out of the morgue proved difficult. Without ever quite injuring anyone, the animated dead man made it clear that he was not interested in leaving in the slightest, and leaving the door open did nothing but cause rumours and bad feeling on base.

Eventually I had to send Zed and Raven del Cid in with stun prods to shock the corpse until it stopped moving and transfer it to a holding tank. Work could begin on understanding the aliens in the morgue.

It didn't take long, however, before preliminary work was completed. theJrade once more appeared at my office door, looking rather green.

"Sir, just finished writing up that autopsy report"

"You alright son?"

"Sir, I'm a theoretical physicist, not much of one for the messier bits of biology, if you get my meaning".

"Very well, drop the report off and go and have a lie down, looks like you need it".

The report was gruesome, but revealing. The alien construction technology was largely based on plastics, light and flexible, they had been implanted in these "Deep One" creatures as an artificial carapace. It was a start, if we could get machining capability to work this stuff, we could make armour.

The armour project would have to wait, however, as the attack klaxon sounded. After an entire month without alien contact, they were coming at us again.

In the holding tanks, the corpse of Fish became agitated, thrashing itself against the reinforced hatch, and when it was opened to prevent the body damaging itself unduly, rushing with frightening speed to the Triton. Even death, it seemed, would not stop Zombie Fish from fighting to avenge himself.

The aliens continue to display odd behaviors in their operational methods. A third attack in as many months as the team has been operating, which seems alarmingly high compared to the way the aliens operated during the first war. Either we're not picking up the majority of their movements, or they're just really pissed off.

Zed and Raven have seemed to be a bit on-edge every since they were assigned to something involving the Morgue. Judging by how someone in a battle-damaged dive suit just bolted from the holding tanks towards the Triton, I'm guessing it had something to do with the still inexplicably undead Fish. I still have no idea what to make of his refusal to stay dead, and I'm wary about asking questions. But from what I remember my father telling me about his own experiences with "immortal" teammates, it seems to me that this is far different.

Anyway I need to stop rambling and get geared up.

Alien engagement, Island of Tonga
Raven del Cid. Maritime Division: Assault squad

Bloody 'ell, these alien bastards just don't quit do they?. Well at least we now know that the detection equipment in the South Pacific are working well. The teams getting geared up for deployment in Tonga, including, uh, Mr. Fish!.

I'm not sure what's more unnerving, the fact that the Admiral asked me an Zed to uh, "incapacitate" our friend who should for all intents and purposes be in a permanent state of death after being skewered..but no, the man still walks amongst the living. Christ, he is even boarding the Triton as we speak. This is going to be a long and awkward trip!.

Del Cid Out!

The announcement about the new Sonic Cannon was posted in the break room today, and I immediately put in a request for one. I always heard stories from my dad about his relationship with his gun, and I wouldn't mind working on a dynamic duo myself. This "Blasta" is alright, I guess, but it doesn't have enough meat to it to match my personality. I always -- Shit, there's the klaxon. I gotta get the hell to the Triton. I can only hope the bigwigs have received my request by now and assigned me a new gun. If not, I'll just have to bash some Xeno-heads the good old fashioned way.

More new guns, yay. Um, I'm scared here. I saw Raven and Zed rushing off to the morgue with thermal tasers in hand, and I swear I saw someone slip into the Triton while we were gearing up a minute ago. Uh oh, time to get in the sub.

I'm sleeping with a gun under my pillow from now on.

Oh wowzers TFTD. I loved this game, but man, it certainly separates the men from the aliens (specially the 3 part terror missions, they put the 'OH SHI-' in ocean)!

Alien engagement (en route to the island of Tonga)
Raven del Cid. Maritime Division: Assault squad

The Triton is blasting it's away through the South Pacific. Everything is quiet on board...too quiet!!.

I am two seat to the right of Zombie Fish, he doesn't seem to be making any small talk or talk of any kind for that matter, though I get the distinct feeling that he is screaming inside..bursting with things to say. I must give him credit, he is playing the part of "dead man walking" pretty well, he even got dressed in his aquatic suit, bless the lad, I wonder if anyone has spoken to him..about him being dead and all?.

I waved my hand in front of his helmet two minutes ago, no response!. I wonder if he has any thoughts, or if it's just like a long sleepwalk while awake?. I shall experiment by ticking his feet, I wonder if he will notice???. Failing that, SHADOW PUPPETS!!.

I hope he doesn't come violent!.

Oh well, the way I see it, either he'll kill me or an alien will kill me!. I'm not sure what I prefer at the moment but you know, "nothing ventured, nothing gained!".

Ending Log!. Ciao World!

END TRANSMISSION

I am not sure what compelled me to write this, but I did, after several caffeinated drinks!. Stupid Red bull!!
